Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mr. Smith's Review of the "Letter of Leonard Jarvis, to His Constituents of the Hancock and Washington District, in Maine" Such is his exposition of himself. And does it not betray a species of dishonesty at heart which few men would nurture, that pretended any respect for honorable intercourse with men? I ask every one who feels an interest to read this controversy, to analyze in his own mind the principles ofaction thus avowed. The first position is, that even though a man obtains the contents of a confidential letter by mistake, he is not bound thereafter to respect that letter, orits contents, as confidential! The second is, that if one by mistake communicates to another a confidential letter from athird person, it is the duty of the first to request the second to keep the information thus disclosed secret, or he is at liberty to make what use ofit he pleases; The third is, that in either of the supposed cases, if the person thus possessed of a confidential letter by mistake makes use of its contents to the prejudice of the writer ofthe letter, the writer ofit has no reason to complain of it, or hold the guilty one secountable, but it is the exclusive privilege of the one to whom it was written to do so! Such is Leonard Jarvis's code of honor and honesty, promulgated by himself! Could such absurd and piratical principles ever have found an advocate in any man Ymg! Ifhe had the slightest chance of defending himself, by recognizing principles more just and consistent With fair dealing? Is not the avowal of such principles of palliation and defence of his conduct, in all respects tantamount to an admission, that his conduct to be palliated and defended has been that ofa base, unprincipled man? But mark still further the odious inconsistency of the man. When my confidential letter to Mr. Anderson fell into Mr. Jarvis's hands, and its contents were violated by him, Mr. Ahderson, the recipient of it, was the only person to complain rightfully ofite abuse. I, the writer of it, could have no right to complain of it. When Mr. Dunlap's confidential letter to me fell into the same hands, Mr. Jarvi's's, and its contents were violated by him in a like manner, Mr. Dunlap, the writer afit, and not myselfthe recipient of it, was the right person to be in. Formed of it at once by this same honorable Mr. Jarvis, and the person having the most aggravating cause of complaint! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the best history books I've read in the last few years." —Chris Hayes The Field of Blood recounts the previously untold story of the violence in Congress that helped spark the Civil War. A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR AN NPR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR ONE OF SMITHSONIAN'S BEST HISTORY BOOKS OF THE YEAR Historian Joanne B. Freeman recovers the long-lost story of physical violence on the floor of the U.S. Congress. Drawing on an extraordinary range of sources, she shows that the Capitol was rife with conflict in the decades before the Civil War. Legislative sessions were often punctuated by mortal threats, canings, flipped desks, and all-out slugfests. When debate broke down, congressmen drew pistols and waved Bowie knives. One representative even killed another in a duel. Many were beaten and bullied in an attempt to intimidate them into compliance, particularly on the issue of slavery. These fights didn’t happen in a vacuum. Freeman’s dramatic accounts of brawls and thrashings tell a larger story of how fisticuffs and journalism, and the powerful emotions they elicited, raised tensions between North and South and led toward war. In the process, she brings the antebellum Congress to life, revealing its rough realities—the feel, sense, and sound of it—as well as its nation-shaping import. Funny, tragic, and rivetingly told, The Field of Blood offers a front-row view of congressional mayhem and sheds new light on the careers of John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, and other luminaries, as well as introducing a host of lesser-known but no less fascinating men. The result is a fresh understanding of the workings of American democracy and the bonds of Union on the eve of their greatest peril.

Download or read book New England Must Not Be Trampled On written by Roger Ginn and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 24, 1838, Maine Congressman Jonathan Cilley was killed in Maryland by another Congressman from Kentucky in one of the last duels to take place in the United States. At the time, dueling was not illegal, but still Cilley’s death was a shock to the nation. Before the duel, fought with rifles at less than one hundred paces, Cilley is believed to have said, “New England must not be trampled on.” He fought for the honor of his name, the honor of his home state, and the stout patriotism he held all his life. This revealing biography considers Cilley’s short life: his early years in New Hampshire, his time at Bowdoin College and his friendship with Nathaniel Hawthorn, his marriage and political life, the events that caused him to accept the duel challenge, and the duel itself, with its tragic aftermath. It also provides an intriguing look into the politics of nineteenth century America.
