Book excerpt: In a charming tale of an elderly man and his obliging young friend, former poet laureate Ted Kooser and newcomer Daniel Duncan invite us to look at the world with fresh eyes. Mr. Posey is feeling gloomy. Everything seems dull. Maybe he needs new glasses? Perhaps a trip to the Cheer Up Thrift Shop with his energetic young neighbor, Andy, will help. But when the duo try on the glasses in the shop’s barrel, they’re in for a big surprise. One pair with stars for frames shows only constellations in a night sky. Round frames reveal a world all aswirl, while a heart-shaped pair makes everything pink. And as soon as Mr. Posey puts on the cat-eye framed glasses, fierce dogs start chasing him. No, thank you! But when Andy makes a simple observation, Mr. Posey’s view opens to a whole new world — and finally everything is brighter, different, and exciting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Housewives Thru the Decades Series – The 1950s (Yeah, they were desperate then too!)In the small town of Stepp's Ford, kids rode their bikes and salesmen sold their wares door-to-door, both taking advantage of the long summer days. At night, residents nestled into their beds, forgetting to lock their doors and leaving their windows opened to cooling breezes. No one expected treachery among their own because in this land of flag-waving and apple pies, everyone knew their neighbor….But did they really?Yes, July 2, 1957, was a day like any other, or so it seemed to those on Twilight Circle, until Orson and Joan Weldon moved into the house at 212, several strange tracks were discovered in the patch of woods nearby, and the Omega salesman disappeared…On the circle, Dana Wynters has her hands full, being newly divorced and taking in her nine-year-old nephew, Remy, for the summer. In addition, a handsome stranger has rented the garage apartment next door to Dana Wynters. Sam “Mac” Macready claims to be a mystery writer, although Dana rarely sees him writing. Still, her two neighbors encourage Dana to snatch Mac up before some other divorcee lands him. And Mac can't help but notice Dana's stunning blue eyes and curvy figure that would have any guy whistling “Dixie.” But Dana and Mac's romance keeps hitting a snag, because in this quiet, little town, murder may have been done. And it seems all the neighbors have skeletons in their closets and they'll do anything to keep their secrets buried. Especially Mac.

Book excerpt: About the Exhibit: This is a collaborative print exhibit with visual artist, Byron Sletten and Pulitzer Prize winning US Poet Laureate, Ted Kooser. This collaboration reflects some common ideas about using familiar references to address human truths. It's accessible, approachable and yet as C. G. Jung would say, archetypal. Ted Kooser is known for his conversational style of poetry. Critic Dana Gioia, in his book Can Poetry Matter?, describes Kooser’s style as “drawn from common speech, with subject matter common to the Midwest.” Kooser’s early and contemporary work involves both troubles for Mid-westerners, and observations from everyday life. This could describe Sletten's approach as well. His work incorporates objects that are lifted out of everyday experience – a glass jar, a rowboat, an old steam iron, a pair of nurse's shoes... they suggest a story that connects to larger issues in life and relationships. A Little Background: Byron Sletten has exhibited in over 40 national and international shows over the last 30 years. This work is created using 3D imaging software to create realistic renderings – duplicating the physics of light with computer calculations. There is a video discussion. In 2005 Ted Kooser received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his book "Delights and Shadows.” He was named Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry by the Librarian of Congress to serve a term from October 2004 through May 2005. Then in 2005 was appointed to serve a second term as Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry. There is a video on page 17. Both Sletten and Kooser lived in Lincoln Nebraska and graduated from the U of NE, and coincidentally also grew up in Ames, Iowa. Although they never crossed paths then, in 2018 they connected and found common creative interests. (All works in exhibit are archival digital prints on paper, approximately 32” x 54”)

As Master Wizard and Prince of New Avon, he ruled scores of outlying herds and commanded North America's most powerful source of magic: Mornwing Upwelling. He was young and handsome and newly life-mated to Alcyon Skydance Galeryon of the Far Isles, the most beautiful Pegasian princess he had ever seen. As we humans say, Bruce had it made. Then, suddenly: Transfer orders! His ancestral dimension was slated to be downsized to dandle fluff by the Great Herdmaster and the Council of Greater Sentient Species. As if that weren't enough, his gorgeous little princess became a headstrong, power-hungry nag, and then Bruce blundered into the arms of a very powerful, very inept witch. The woman most foully Enchanted him, and her polluting touch forced Alcy, her annoying firedrake Maitland, and Bruce into exile in the mundane. Imagine! Pegasian Royalty in a stall! That's where the trio had to take refuge, though, thanks to Laura Hennessey LaCroix whose commands required Bruce to use every last ounce of magic and all his Powers—invisibility, mimicry, flight, telepathy, and Inspiration—to obey her or die. Thrown into the world of men, Bruce became an outlaw, lost his principality, and open a gifted man to dark and dangerous Powers. And, while Alcy and Bruce struggled just to stay alive, an evil, shape-changing monster declared war on them, their humans, and all of mankind!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently appointed as the new U. S. Poet Laureate, Ted Kooser has been writing and publishing poetry for more than forty years. In the pages of The Poetry Home Repair Manual, Kooser brings those decades of experience to bear. Here are tools and insights, the instructions (and warnings against instructions) that poets—aspiring or practicing—can use to hone their craft, perhaps into art. Using examples from his own rich literary oeuvre and from the work of a number of successful contemporary poets, the author schools us in the critical relationship between poet and reader, which is fundamental to what Kooser believes is poetry’s ultimate purpose: to reach other people and touch their hearts. Much more than a guidebook to writing and revising poems, this manual has all the comforts and merits of a long and enlightening conversation with a wise and patient old friend—a friend who is willing to share everything he’s learned about the art he’s spent a lifetime learning to execute so well.
