Book Synopsis A Study on the Performance of "Night-Glasses" (Classic Reprint) by : Louis Claude Martin
Download or read book A Study on the Performance of "Night-Glasses" (Classic Reprint) written by Louis Claude Martin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study on the Performance of "Night-Glasses" Assuming, as Mr. Martin does, that the pupil of the eye in the dusk has a diameter of about 8 mm., it is evident that, so long as the magnifying power is not greater than the ratio of the diameter of the cg. And the diameter of the pupil, the brightness of the retinal picture is practically the same no matter what the magnifying power maybe; but as soon as this limit is exceeded and the magnifying power made greater than this ratio, then the brightness of the retinal picture falls off with increase of magnifying power. In spite, however, of this falling off in brightness increased visibility still results, within limits, from increased magnifying power. The problem of the night-glass therefore practically resolves itself into the determination of the extent to which, under given light conditions, magnifying power may be put into a telescope at the expense of the reduction of the effective diameter of the pupil, and the consequent reduction of the brightness of the retinal picture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mr. Turtle's Flying Adventure: Hollow Tree Stories Well, one day I was Showing off more than usual and had paddled out farther toward the Drifts, saying to the others that I was going to pay a call on Old Man Moccasin. I kept on farther than I intended, for it was a nice summer day and the water felt good. I didn't know how far I had gone until I turned around to look, and then I didn't think about that any more, for a quarter of a mile away, and between me and the Shore, was Old Man Moccasin, coming straight in my direction. He was a good two feet out of the water and had on his far sighted glasses, and I knew he was after me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Magic Glasses and Other Lectures: A Sequel to Fairyland of Science The two last lectures wander away from this path, and yet form a natural conclusion to the Magician's lectures to his young Devonshire lads. They have been published before, one in the Y out/1's Companion of Boston, u.s., and the other in Atalanta, in which the essay on Fungi also appeared in a shorter form. All three lectures have, however, been revised and fully illustrated, and I trust that the volume, as a whole, may prove a pleasant Christmas companion. For the magnificent photograph of Orion's nebula, forming the Frontispiece, I am indebted to the courtesy of Mr. Isaac Roberts, who most kindly lent me the plate for reproduction; and I have had the great good fortune to obtain permission from MM. Book excerpt: Hiroshima is the story of six people—a clerk, a widowed seamstress, a physician, a Methodist minister, a young surgeon, and a German Catholic priest—who lived through the greatest single manmade disaster in history. In vivid and indelible prose, Pulitzer Prize–winner John Hersey traces the stories of these half-dozen individuals from 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, when Hiroshima was destroyed by the first atomic bomb ever dropped on a city, through the hours and days that followed. Almost four decades after the original publication of this celebrated book, Hersey went back to Hiroshima in search of the people whose stories he had told, and his account of what he discovered is now the eloquent and moving final chapter of Hiroshima.
