Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1948, is an enjoyable biography of George William Borg (1887-1960), an American industrialist, inventor, and one of the founders of the Borg-Warner Corporation. While at Borg & Beck, which was formed in 1914 by his father Victor Borg and Gary Marshall Beck, George W. Borg was instrumental in developing the first successful automobile clutch, a revolutionary clutch using a circular pressure plate that would hold well when engaged yet slip as needed when starting out. He managed the partnership, which was ultimately merged with Warner Transmission in 1922 to form Borg-Warner Corp. In 1925, Borg, who wanted his own business independent of Borg-Warner, collaborated with William Greenleaf to develop a new venture in automobile clocks. Following a brief partnership with Greenleaf Corp. from 1926-1927, Borg set up the George W. Borg Corp, whose clocks first appeared in 1928. With the Depression soon at hand, Borg’s lower-cost clocks were in demand, and soon Borg clocks were sold as factory equipment in all the major car lines, including General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler.

Book excerpt: Soft material-enabled electronics offer distinct advantage, over conventional rigid and bulky devices, for numerous wearable and implantable applications. Soft materials allow for seamless integration with skin and tissues due to enhanced mechanical flexibility and stretchability. Wearable devices, such as sensors, offer continuous, real-time monitoring of biosignals and movements, which can be applied in rehabilitation and diagnostics, among other applications. Soft implantable electronics offer similar functionalities, but with improved compatibility with human tissues. Biodegradable soft implantable electronics are also being developed for transient monitoring, such as in the weeks following surgery. To further advance soft electronics, materials, integration strategies, and fabrication techniques are being developed. This paper reviews recent progress in these areas, toward the development of soft material-enabled electronics for medicine, healthcare, and human-machine interfaces.

Book excerpt: This book is about field responsive fluids as smart materials, which includes magneto-rheological (MR) fluids, electro-rheological (ER) fluids and ferrofluids. It reviews the previous works and considers all the aspects that can help researchers and industries to choose proper materials as MR fluid constituents. Topics in magnetism and types of magnetic materials are presented. This includes the effect of magnetizable particles behaviors such as size, shape and density. The type of materials on the rheological properties is also compared for MR, ER and ferro-fluids. The second part of the book discusses advanced topics for MR, ER and ferro-fluids comparing some of the properties between the field responsive fluids. This book appeals to engineers, researchers and practitioners in the area of materials and mechanical engineering with interest in the field responsive fluids.

Book excerpt: ERMR 2006 included invited speakers, technical presentations, poster presentations, and a student paper competition. At the conference banquet, Dr. David Carlson of Lord Corporation addressed the conference attendees and gave a stirring speech on the history of ER and MR fluids, as well as current and future applications. A unique feature of the ERMR Conferences is that they comprehensively cover issues ranging from physics to chemistry to engineering applications of ER and MR materials held in a general session to enhance the interaction between the scientists and engineers. The sessions in ERMR 2006 were organized based into two Symposia: a) Materials and b) Applications. Topics covered in the Materials Symposium included: mechanisms, preparation, and characterization of ER and MR materials. Topics covered in the Applications Symposium included: ER and MR devices, control systems, system integration, and applications. This structure was implemented in order to enable interaction between attending scientists and engineers in both the Materials Symposium and the Applications Symposium, and to enhance the free flow of ideas, and the potential collaborative research opportunities. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Transient Behavior of Electrorheological Fluids in Shear Flow (471 KB). Book excerpt: A BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN ACCOUNT OF THE NBA’S GLORY DAYS, AND THE RIVALRY THAT DOMINATED THE ERA In the mid-1950s, the NBA was a mere barnstorming circuit, with outposts in such cities as Rochester, New York, and Fort Wayne, Indiana. Most of the best players were white; the set shot and layup were the sport’s chief offensive weapons. But by the 1970s, the league ruled America’s biggest media markets; contests attracted capacity crowds and national prime-time television audiences. The game was played “above the rim”–and the most marketable of its high-flying stars were black. The credit for this remarkable transformation largely goes to two giants: Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain. In The Rivalry, award-winning journalist John Taylor projects the stories of Russell, Chamberlain, and other stars from the NBA’s golden age onto a backdrop of racial tensions and cultural change. Taylor’s electrifying account of two complex men–as well as of a game and a country at a crossroads–is an epic narrative of sports in America during the 1960s. It’s hard to imagine two characters better suited to leading roles in the NBA saga: Chamberlain was cast as the athletically gifted yet mercurial titan, while Russell played the role of the stalwart centerpiece of the Boston Celtics dynasty. Taylor delves beneath these stereotypes, detailing how the two opposed and complemented each other and how they revolutionized the way the game was played and perceived by fans. Competing with and against such heroes as Jerry West, Tom Heinsohn, Bob Cousy, John Havlicek, and Elgin Baylor, and playing for the two greatest coaches of the era, Alex Hannum and the fiery Red Auerbach, Chamberlain and Russell propelled the NBA into the spotlight. But their off-court visibility and success–to say nothing of their candor–also inflamed passions along America’s racial and generational fault lines. In many ways, Russell and Chamberlain helped make the NBA and, to some extent, America what they are today. Filled with dramatic conflicts and some of the great moments in sports history, and building to a thrilling climax–the 1969 final series, the last showdown between Russell and Chamberlain–The Rivalry has at its core a philosophical question: Can determination and a team ethos, embodied by the ultimate team player, Bill Russell, trump sheer talent, embodied by Wilt Chamberlain? Gripping, insightful, and utterly compelling, the story of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain is the stuff of sporting legend. Written with a reporter’s unerring command of events and a storyteller’s flair, The Rivalry will take its place as one of the classic works of sports history.

Book excerpt: Electrorheological (ER) and magnetorheological (MR) fluids, which can be transformed from the liquid state into the solid state in milliseconds by applying an electric or a magnetic field, are smart fluids having the potential to revolutionize several industrial sectors. The Seventh International Conference on Electrorheological Fluids and Magnetorheological Suspensions took place at a time when some MR and ER applications were beginning to appear on the market, making a notable impact on industries. Scientists and engineers in multidisciplinary areas came together to explore the state-of-the-art technology and identify thrust areas to be focused on.This volume of proceedings collects contributions from most leading experts in the field. It reviews the most recent MR and ER applications, discusses the materials technology, explores the basic science research on ER and MR fluids, and examines the novel properties of these fluids. It provides the most up-to-date and probably the best information about the area. It can serve as a stimulating and valuable reference for research workers and students in materials science, condensed matter physics, engineering, and chemistry. The valuable information not only reports on the leading edge of research and applications, but also provides an overview of the field.
