Book Synopsis Neville Chamberlain by : Robert Self
Download or read book Neville Chamberlain written by Robert Self and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History has not looked kindly upon Neville Chamberlain. Despite a long and distinguished political career, his trip to Munich in 1938 and the 'appeasement' of Hitler have forever overshadowed his many other achievements and blighted his reputation, his name now synonymous with the futility of trying to reason with dictators and bullies. Yet, as this biography shows, there is much more to this complex and intriguing character than is generally supposed, and even the infamous events of 1938 are open to more charitable interpretations than is usually the case. Appeasement brought the British government crucial time in which to rearm, and in particular allowed the RAF to drastically increase the number of fighter aircraft it could muster for the Battle of Britain during the summer of 1940. Based on the study of over 150 collections of private papers on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as exhaustive exploration of British government records held in the National Archives, it is no exaggeration to say that the author has surveyed virtually all the existing archival material written by or to Chamberlain, as well as a high proportion of that referring to him. As such, this volume will no doubt establish itself as the definitive account of Chamberlain's life and career, and provide a much fuller and fairer picture of his actions than has hitherto been the case.

Book Synopsis Chamberlain and the Lost Peace by : John Charmley
Download or read book Chamberlain and the Lost Peace written by John Charmley and published by Ivan R. Dee. This book was released on 1999-05-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most studies of World War II assume that it was, in some way, a triumph for Britain. John Charmley’s important new reappraisal of the immediate origins of the war is based on extensive new work in the Chamberlain papers. It starts from Chamberlain’s belief that even a victorious war would be a disaster—it would destroy the foundations of British power and hand over Europe to Russian domination. Reconstructing Chamberlain’s policy assumptions, Mr. Charmley argues that they were neither naïve nor foolish. While focusing on the prime minister’s personality, he also shows that Chamberlain’s views were shared by many other leading politicians and diplomats. Mr. Charmley thus resurrects a whole school of thought on foreign policy which was forgotten in the wake of Churchill’s triumph. Unlike Churchill, Chamberlain was not prepared to gamble an empire; but events produced, according to Mr. Charmley, indeed a “human tragedy.” Early British reviews of the book have called it “important,” “entertaining and absorbing,” “concise and spirited,” and “provocative.” The Guardian wrote: “Chamberlain hardly emerges a hero from these pages, but at least there is no excuse left for regarding him as no more than a wimp in a wing-collar.”

Download or read book God Code written by Timothy P. Smith and published by WaterBrook. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book that inspired the major History Channel special God Code shows there is more to the Bible than meets the eye—messages from God hidden for ages, now revealed by modern computer technology. In God Code, antiquities expert Timothy P. Smith reveals his decades-long quest to understand the complex messages he discovered in an ancient Hebrew manuscript of the Bible. This painstaking search involves adventure and mystery, but instead of consulting ancient maps to find buried treasure, Smith relied on the data calculation power of modern technology. His quest shows how Scripture is more amazing than we ever dreamed—and that it may even reveal the future of generations living today. God Code reveals: • An encrypted code in Genesis, in the oldest known Hebrew text of the Old Testament, that predicted the birth and resurrection of Jesus. • Scientific evidence that this encrypted code was authored by the divine hand of God. • Signs that there are more encrypted codes in this same Hebrew text that will lead to additional messages from God to humanity. • Hidden clues that may lead to the location of long-missing sacred artifacts, such as the Ark of the Covenant. • Insights on why Smith was chosen to uncover this encrypted code. • A dire warning that God wants us to hear—and heed. In the companion History Channel series, the author travels across continents in search of artifacts missing since Bible times—clues to their location revealed in God Code. Book Synopsis Neville Chamberlain by : Walter Reid

Book excerpt: Neville Chamberlain is remembered today as Hitler's credulous dupe, the man who proclaimed in September 1938 that the Munich agreement guaranteed 'peace in our time'. This is a magisterial reappraisal of Chamberlain and his legacy. It reveals the nuances of a complex and sensitive man who was a true radical and a man of passion, especially in all that concerned the welfare of his fellow citizens. As Minister of Health, Chancellor and Prime Minister, he presided over a fundamental modernisation of Britain, shuttingthe door on the Victorian age, ending free trade, improving living conditions and abolishing the Poor Law and the workhouse. Munich was much more than the traditional narrative suggests. Scarred by the death of his cousin in the First World War, Chamberlain was determined to ensure that a new generation was spared the tragic waste that had consumed their elders. Even so, he prepared for war while he worked for peace. The aircraft that won the Battle of Britain were built on his watch. He didn't win the Second World War, but it was he who ensured it wasn't lost in 1940.
