Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the book contains over 300 photos and documents, a colorful and more luxurious edition . When we created MPO-Pirin in 2011, the Chicago sections of MPO were six or seven. Only a few years later, reviewing the photos and documents I had taken in the MPO Archives, as well as documents sent by George Lebamov and the archives of Ivan Ilchev, I thought abouthow many sections the organization had in its history. I was surprised to find that there have been more than 50 throughout the 100-year history of the MPO. Unfortunately, the most active years of the MPO were in the 30s and 40s of the 20th Century, and subsequently the Organization weakened, but there is a logical explanation for this. The initial enthusiasm, the MPO was organized in 1922 and we can only imagine in those times when people were still in contact with letters and received information from newspapers and radio and still organized. As a result of World War II and the dramatic changes that occurred after the war, it stopped the natural flow of people from the Balkans moving to and from the American continent. Wild communism imposed by Soviet Russia in Bulgaria, as well as the repressive regimes of Greece and Tito's Yugoslavia stopped the natural connection of the Bulgarians from MK with America. It was not until 1960 that Dictator Tito allowed Yugoslavs to leave freely. People in Bulgaria are not so lucky. At the same time, Tito began sending agents who infiltrated the MPO, began to arrive from Yugoslav Macedonia, educated in the Yugoslav spirit and trained in the new "Macedonian" language and alphabet created after 1944. Sponsored by Yugoslavia New "Macedonian" churches began to be built, and Yugoslav Consuls "invited" Macedonian emigrants to leave the old Macedonian-Bulgarian churches organized by the MPO. In Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Greece, the MPO was called Enemy Emigration. The MPO faces an impossible mission against the propaganda machines of Greece, Tito's Yugoslavia and communist Bulgaria. The biggest blow against the MPO came after 1989. At that time, a large number of MPO members were deceived by the "Independence" of Vardar Macedonia and tried with all their might and means to help the new Republic of Macedonia. Unfortunately, this new Republic not only did not get rid of the lies and falsifications of history, but continued to spread and even impose new fabrications on the history of the people of Macedonia in the 21st century. Lies against which the MPO after 1944 has not stopped fighting. There is no book, declaration or newspaper of the MPO after 1944 in which these lies and falsifications are not shown. In 2004, the UMD was even established in the United States for the sole purpose of continuing to spread Tito's Yugoslav lies and falsifications among Macedonian immigrants. Unfortunately, some out of ignorance, some out ofa desire to help a large number of old emigrants support this organization.

Unfortunately, some out of ignorance, some out of a desire to help a large number of old emigrants support this organization. I tried to find several documents or photos from each Chapter of the MPO in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Unfortunately for some of the Chapters I only have the name, but eventually photos and documents will be added in a future reissue of the book album. The documents of all MPO Chapters unequivocally show that the founders and members of MPO were Bulgarians from Macedonia and fought with all their might and means against Tito's fictional Macedonism.99% of the documents I have collected in this book are unknown to the general public. These are documents from the history of the MPO(Macedonian Patriotic Organization), which will be interesting for historians, researchers and lovers of the history of Macedono-Bulgarian emigration. I leave them without comment, everyone will be able to read and understand the spirit of the era in which they were written. In a future reprint of this book can only be translated into Eng. and Bulgarian and vice versa, so that a larger circle of readers can understand all the documents. I think these documents are very interesting and fill a gap in the last 100 years of Macedono-Bulgarian history and will be very interesting especially for the Macedonian Bulgarians. The book contains more than 300 documents and photos

Is the nameissue with Greece the only problem? In fact, mostproblems R.N. Macedonia has are related to the existingfundamental identity confusion. The Republic of North Macedonia is trying to build its identity upon theft andfalsifications of the history of their neighbors. In spite ofGreece being the current "show-stopper" for R.N. Macedoniato join the EU, the real victims of this identitytheft are the Macedonian Bulgarians. R.N. Macedoniawould officially usurp any part of the Bulgarian characterand history associated with the geographical region ofMacedonia. Among these are the medieval Bulgariantzar Samuil, Bulgarian national revival key figures born inMacedonia-the Miladinov brothers, Kuzman Shapkarev, Rajko Zhinzifov, Grigor Parlichev, Nathaniel Ohridski, Jordan Hadzhikonstantinov-Djinot among others, ourBulgarian revolutionaries from IMRO and the Macedono-Bulgarian emigrant organizations in Bulgaria, Europe, America, and Canada. R.N. Macedonia is attempting to stealthe authentic history of MPO. Let every reader judge forhim/herself what kind of organization MPO is indee

Book excerpt: The documents in this book were photographed with 3-4 different cameras or telephones in 4-5 different visits from 2010 to 2019 in the Museum of Macedonian Tribune and archive of MPO in the town of Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA and the author's personal archive. And this is why they are of different quality, moreover the light in the archive is not good enough. Some of the documents are from the archive of Ivan Ilchev, who years ago was delivered by George Lebamoff to the archive of University of Chicago.MPO documents are one of the most difficult to reach. The reasons for this are several: 1.Distance of the archive in the city. Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA, is 300 km from Chicago and 10 000 km from Bulgaria and Macedonia. 2. Many of these documents are printed and shipped to local sections of MPO and are sunk into their archives. 3. The archive is not digitized, not organized thematically and the search for documents is extremely difficult. 4. A number of members in the MPO have sold themselfs to hostal organizations as UMD or are not interested in the truth and do not want these documents to be accessible because they will show the Bulgarian character of the people founded MPO. 5. The same enemy circles in the MPO want the building of Macedonian Tribune with the museum and the archive to be sold, which will not only erase the archive and the museum, but will cut the main source of income and will lead it to end of MPO. These documents displayed and arranged chronologically do not need interpretations and explanations. I will only add, in a future reissue, quotations in English and Bulgarian, for those who do not possess one of the two languages used in the documents. They show the struggle of MPO in defending the Bulgarians from Macedonia and the Kingdom, against the Serbian and Greek oppressors in Macedonia, against Bulgarian traitor Governments , and after 1944 against the Bulgarian Communist and Yugoslav attempts to create Macedonian nation, Language and alphabet. Part of the documents are published in the newspaper Macedonian Tribune or the Macedonia newspaper . These documents are "death" for today's insolent ancient Macedonian, which continues to try to assign a part of the Bulgarian history including Tsar Samuel, the Bulgarian Ancestors from Macedonia, the IMRO komities, etc. This book will spoil the mood of the "ethnic" Macedonians in MPO, because it will show that their fathers and grandfathers were strong Bulgarians. I think this book will be interesting for both professional historians and history lovers, as well as book and document collectors. Especially important are the documents after 1944 because they show that during communism in Bulgaria, when the Communists Tried to educate internationalists, MPO was one of the few organizations that has raised a voice in defending the Bulgarians and their national feeling in both Yugoslavian Macedonia and Bulgaria.

Book excerpt: During the twentieth century Macedonia had a very turbulent history. Essentially, the region became the apple of discord among the Balkan states. Ethnic identity formation among immigrants from Macedonia to Canada followed the political developments in the Balkans. This book illustrates the late emergence of an ethnic Macedonian community in Toronto and the roots of the clash between the Macedonian, Greek and Bulgarian ethnic communities. The author tackles a number of important questions: When did the Macedonian ethnic identity start in Canada? What was the ethnic affiliation of the first Macedonian immigrants' cultural organizations and churches in Toronto? Why did they use the Bulgarian language? Why do their first churches continue to be called Macedono-Bulgarian churches? Did all immigrants have one monolithic ethnic identity? The author relies upon three different types of literature: national identity development and theories; Balkan history; and ethnic studies of the Bulgarian, Macedonian and Greek settlements of Toronto. Oral interviews, conducted in Toronto by the author and other researchers, enhance this volume. The book sheds light on a much contested subject which continues to fuel debate from Skopje, Athens and Sofia to Toronto and Melbourne.--Publisher's description

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located at the very heart of the Balkans, the Republic of Macedonia has a rich and turbulent history, which reflects all the complexities of the region's past and present-day politics. In the late 19th and the early 20th century, it became the focal point of competition by the fledgling Balkan nation-states over the declining Ottoman Empire's European possessions. Late Ottoman Macedonia was a region, which impressed the external observer with its diversity: ethnic, religious, linguistic, clannish, and territorial identities all overlapped in a complex and puzzling mosaic. It is this diversity that has led to the Macedonian Question of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and continues to raise questions today. The Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Macedonia traces the key political, socio-economic, and cultural developments in the multiethnic mosaic that is Republic of Macedonia following its secession from the Yugoslav federation in the autumn of 1991. It also surveys often overlooked topics, such as the social transformations underwent in the course of the 20th century and during the decades of socialism, as well as the recent debates about historical memory and roots of the Slav Macedonian nation. Complete with a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and over 400 hundred cross-referenced dictionary entries, this reference provides a rich account of the history, present-day politics, and society of the Republic of Macedonia.

Lillian Petroff, in her book Sojourners and Settlers, has remedied that omission in an informative and enjoyable manner. She charts the settlement patterns, living and working conditions, religious life, and political activity of Macedonians in Toronto from the early twentieth century to the Second World War. The first Macedonians who came to Toronto lived an almost isolated existence in a distinct set of neighbourhoods that were centred around their church, stores, and boarding houses. They moved with little awareness of the city-at-large since the needs of their families in the old country and political events in their homeland were much more important to them than developments in Toronto and Canada. A greater interest in Canada began to take root only after Macedonians began to think less like sojourners and more like settlers. This transition was often accompanied by a move from bachelorhood to marriage and from industrial labour to individual entrepreneurial activities. Employing a wealth of primary written and oral source material, Petroff tells the remarkable story of the men and women who laid the foundation for what would become a significant community in the Toronto area, which today represents the largest community of Macedonians outside the Balkans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between national history, identity, and politics in twentieth-century Macedonia. It focuses on the reverberating power of events surrounding an armed uprising in August 1903, when a revolutionary organization challenged the forces of the Ottoman Empire by seizing control of the mountain town of Krusevo. A century later, Krusevo is part of the Republic of Macedonia and a site for yearly commemorations of 1903. In the course of the intervening hundred years, various communities have vied to establish an authoritative account of what happened in 1903--and to weave those events into a longer and wider narrative of social, cultural, and national evolution. Keith Brown examines how Krusevo's residents, refugees, and exiles have participated--along with scholars, journalists, artists, bureaucrats, and politicians--in a conversation about their vexed past. By tracing different approaches to understanding, commemorating, and narrating the events of 1903, he shows how in this small mountain town the "magic of nationalism" by which destiny is written into particular historical events has neither failed nor wholly succeeded. Stories of heroism, self-sacrifice, and unity still rub against tales of treachery, score settling, and disaster as people come to terms with the legacies of imperialism, socialism, and nationalism. The efforts of Krusevo's successive generations to transcend a past of intercommunal violence reveal how rival claims to knowledge and truth acquire vital significance during rapid social, economic, and political change.
