Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all have the power to achieve personal prosperity and physical health. Who hasn't dreamed of a life where this was true? There are two ways to respond to such a vision. We could stand by and cite all the physical, emotional, mental, social, economic or geographical reasons that thwart our progress. Or, we could identify and remove the personal obstacles to achieving exactly what we want out of life. My book Moving the Stars With Your Words shows the reader the steps to achieving the latter. Today, we measure our prowess as a species strictly in physical and technological terms. Modern medicine is proficient at diagnosing the physical causes of our illnesses; while technology keeps pushing back the realm of the physical unknown. And yet we are a society still awash with mental and physical illnesses, which neither medicine nor technology can eliminate. The great illusion of our times is that only others better qualified than we, particularly those versed in the technical sciences, hold the key to our welfare. My approach and philosophy of life has allowed hundreds of people to choose the experiences they wish to have, and from there, literally to speak those experiences into existence: in other words, to become the Creative Factor in their life. However, individual effort does not preclude conviction and faith in a higher power that can help realizes a new life. No religious doctrine or formula of salvation here. Whatever the reader's spiritual inclinations, this co-creation, as I call it, can create a life of magic. The only requisite is that we get on the side of the universe and speak our life into existence.

Book excerpt: "A handbook for compassion... a Must-Read Music Book.” —Rolling Stone Country "Generous and big-hearted, Gauthier has stories to tell and worthwhile advice to share." —Wally Lamb, author of I Know This Much Is True "Gauthier has an uncanny ability to combine songwriting craft with a seeker’s vulnerability and a sage’s wisdom.” —Amy Ray, Indigo Girls From the Grammy nominated folk singer and songwriter, an inspiring exploration of creativity and the redemptive power of song Mary Gauthier was twelve years old when she was given her Aunt Jenny’s old guitar and taught herself to play with a Mel Bay basic guitar workbook. Music offered her a window to a world where others felt the way she did. Songs became lifelines to her, and she longed to write her own, one day. Then, for a decade, while struggling with addiction, Gauthier put her dream away and her call to songwriting faded. It wasn’t until she got sober and went to an open mic with a friend did she realize that she not only still wanted to write songs, she needed to. Today, Gauthier is a decorated musical artist, with numerous awards and recognition for her songwriting, including a Grammy nomination. In Saved by a Song, Mary Gauthier pulls the curtain back on the artistry of songwriting. Part memoir, part philosophy of art, part nuts and bolts of songwriting, her book celebrates the redemptive power of song to inspire and bring seemingly different kinds of people together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Last Word argues that the Hollywood novel opened up space for cultural critique of the film industry at a time when the industry lacked the capacity to critique itself. While the young studio system worked tirelessly to burnish its public image in the wake of celebrity scandal, several industry insiders wrote fiction to fill in what newspapers and fan magazines left out. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, these novels aimed to expose the invisible machinery of classical Hollywood cinema, including not only the evolving artifice of the screen but also the promotional discourse that complemented it. As likeminded filmmakers in the 1940s and 1950s gradually brought the dark side of the industry to the screen, however, the Hollywood novel found itself struggling to live up to its original promise of delivering the unfilmable. By the 1960s, desperate to remain relevant, the genre had devolved into little more than erotic fantasy of movie stars behind closed doors, perhaps the only thing the public couldn't already find elsewhere. Still, given their unique ability to speak beyond the institutional restraints of their time, these earlier works offer a window into the industry's dynamic creation and re-creation of itself in the public imagination.

Book excerpt: Propertius is a poet of the Augustan period, a successor of the great Hellenistic elegiac poets Callimachus and Philitas, and a precursor of Ovid. His account of his fictionalized affair with his beloved alter ego Cynthia is the purest expression of the spirit of love elegy, setting them as a pair against war, epic, and (apparently) Augustus himself. This is an author read by virtually all students of Classical Latin. Cynthia provides a lucid attempt to understand and correct the many difficulties in the transmitted text. It consists of a commentary on the whole corpus, together with a prose translation (including alternative versions of ambiguous phrasing). In its clear exposition of technical problems, the book will serve as an introduction to Latin textual criticism in the modern age, and to elegiac poetic style.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simone Forti, groundbreaking improvisor, has spent a lifetime weaving together the movement of her mind with the movement of her body to create a unique oeuvre situated at the intersection of dancing and art practices. Her seminal Dance Constructions from the 1960s crafted a new approach to dance composition and helped inspire the investigations of Judson Dance Theater. In the 1970s, Forti's explorations of animal movements expanded that legacy to launch improvisation as a valuable artform in its own right. From her early forays into vocal accompaniment to her News Animations, Forti has long integrated gesture and text into compelling performances that consistently stretched the boundaries of dance to layer abstract movement with story-telling and political commentary. Her "Land Portraits" series brought an immersive ecological experience to New York City stages in the 1980s, and she is a beloved teacher and mentor whose Body, Mind, World workshops have inspired dancers around the world. In this beautifully written book, author Ann Cooper Albright braids archival research, extensive interviews, and detailed movement analyses of Forti's performances to provide the first kinesthetically-informed and critically-nuanced history of Forti's multifaceted and extensive career.

Book excerpt: Writing is a doorway to our most creative, spiritual self. Writing and Being approaches writing at the source of the process and then, with guided personal writing, leads us outward to meaningful and authentic public writing. With powerful, practical step-by-step writing exercises and a plethora of examples, Writing and Being demonstrates that journaling is the most profound way that we can discover our authentic selves. But beyond mere diary writing, the new-found clarity through Nelson's journaling methods help us chart a path for a better future. Nelson begins by providing tips for the logistics of journal keeping, and includes suggestions for getting started. He then explores the entire writing processand explains the distinctions between private writing and public writing. By shedding light on the relationship between meditation and writing, he shows the value of being nonjudgmental and having "soft eyes" and a beginner's mind.Nelson also explains the biology behind the powerful experience of journaling by laying out recent discoveries of the human brain, and shows how journaling can heal psychological and spiritual wounds. Lastly, he shows how journaling is not only a voyage of self-discovery, but through expanding the private writing process can become a means of sharing one's life.
