Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleven entrepreneurial women share their stories of balancing motherhood with starting their own businesses in this inspiring anthology. Motherhood is a full-time job—and so is starting a business from the ground up. Attempting to do both at once can seem daunting, but as these firsthand stories of success demonstrate, it really can be done. In their own words, eleven mom-entrepreneurs tell their stories of transforming their businesses from side-projects in craft-rooms and garages to nationally recognized brands. While each of their stories is unique, these women all speak of the leap of faith required to make their dreams come true. They all share what they learned as their businesses—and children—grew. Now the furniture, clothing, toys, diaper bags, and other products these women create can be found in stores across the country, including at major retailers such as Nordstrom and Walmart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celeste Bedford Walker, one of the most accomplished contemporary playwrights in Texas, crafts dramas from history and everyday life that illuminate the African American experience in all its variety, tragedy, pathos, and hilarity. Collected here are five of her most acclaimed plays: Sassy Mamas, Greenwood: An American Dream Destroyed, Reunion in Bartersville, Distant Voices, and Camp Logan. The topics treated by Walker are timelier than ever. Sassy Mamas follows “three women of substance and of a certain age who flip the script on gender stereotypes and become involved with younger men.” Greenwood: An American Dream Destroyed tells the powerful story of the horrific attack on the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, once known as the “Black Wall Street.” In Reunion in Bartersville, described by Walker as “a comedy-mystery in two acts,” the 50-year class reunion of Bartersville High School turns to hilarious suspense when an unexpected guest arrives. Recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Distant Voices “resurrects” persons buried in College Memorial Park, the second-oldest African American cemetery in Houston, to celebrate the wisdom of those gone before. Camp Logan is based on real-life events in Houston in 1917, when members of the highly decorated 24th Infantry Regiment were subjected to brutal Jim Crow treatment, resulting in a riot that left dozens dead and the execution of seventeen African American soldiers for mutiny. Readers and audiences should be prepared to laugh out loud, to be challenged, to be disturbed, and above all, to be enlightened by this poignant collection of plays.

Book excerpt: When I see kids today, spending their time with all the electronic paraphernalia, I feel sad. Will they, like me, have fond memories of youthful experiences that will last a lifetime? I hope so. It seems they don't know how to play anymore. Also, they don't appear to spend much time outdoors. My youth was spent in a suburban town in northeastern New Jersey. Our home was on the edge of town and bordered a tract of land that included fallow farms, woods and fields, ponds and brooks, the town water company property, and a county park. Our neighborhood was a great place for a spirited kid, and I had many adventures which are described here. I chose poetry, because I tend to be brief, and I enjoy writing it. The reader must use his imagination to fill in the details. Maybe some of my older readers will remember incidents from their own early years. Have a good read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For female pop stars, whose star bodies and star performances are undisputedly the objects of a sexualized external gaze, the process of ageing in public poses particular challenges. Taking a broadly feminist perspective, 'Rock On': women, ageing and popular music shifts popular music studies in a new direction. Focussing on British, American and Latina women performers and ageing, the collection investigates the cultural work performed by artists such as Shirley Bassey, Petula Clark, Madonna, Celia Cruz, Grace Jones and Courtney Love. The study crosses generations of performers and audiences enabling an examination of changing socio-historical contexts and an exploration of the relationships at play between performance strategies, star persona and the popular music press. For instance, the strategies employed by Madonna and Grace Jones to engage with the processes and issues related to public ageing are not the same as those employed by Courtney Love or Celia Cruz. The essays in this insightful collection reflect on the ways that artists and fans destabilise both the linear trajectories and the compelling weight of expectations regarding ageing by employing different modalities of resistance through persona re-invention, nostalgia, postmodern intertextuality and even early death as the ultimate denial of age.
