Book excerpt: We quantified the extent of atrazine retention by Sharkey clay soil based on adsorption and desorption or release experiments. From retention results, we measured an atrazine adsorption coeficiente (Kd) of 3.42 cm3/g. This Kd value was used to calculate a K.oc of 347 for Sharkey soil. Atrazine adsorption-desorption were kinetic in nature. Hysteresis was observed based on deviation of atrazine adsorption data from desorption results. We also quantified the movement of atrazine and nitrate in a field site of Sharkey clay palnted to sugarcane. Subsurface drains at 1 m depth provided leachate, and a series of suction lysimeters allowed sampling of soil solution. Within a few hours of the onset of rain, atrazine and nitrate were observed at high conecntrations in drainage effluent. Atarzine breakthrough to the drains was consistently observed to occur within 30 minutes of the onset of rain during the summer 1991 season. Such interval was short in relation to measured soil hydraulic conductivity and indicative of the dominance of preferential water flow in this soil. The leaching behavior of nitrate during 1991 and 1992 followed a similar pattern to that atrazine despite the fact that nitrate is not subject to retention by the soil matrix.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International concern in scientific, industrial, and governmental communi ties over traces of xenobiotics in foods and in both abiotic and biotic envi ronments has justified the present triumvirate of specialized publications in this field: comprehensive reviews, rapidly published research papers and progress reports, and archival documentations. These three international pUblications are integrated and scheduled to provide the coherency essential for nonduplicative and current progress in a field as dynamic and complex as environmental contamination and toxicology. This series is reserved ex clusively for the diversified literature on ''toxic'' chemicals in our food, our feeds, our homes, recreational and working surroundings, our domestic animals, our wildlife and ourselves. Tremendous efforts worldwide have been mobilized to evaluate the nature, presence, magnitude, fate, and toxi cology of the chemicals loosed upon the earth. Among the sequelae of this broad new emphasis is an undeniable need for an articulated set of authoritative publications, where one can find the latest important world literature produced by these emerging areas of science together with docu mentation of pertinent ancillary legislation. Research directors and legislative or administrative advisers do not have the time to scan the escalating number of technical publications that may contain articles important to current responsibility. Rather, these individu als need the background provided by detailed reviews and the assurance that the latest information is made available to them, all with minimal literature searching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents detailed information on the imidazolinone herbicides, provided in chapters contributed by scientists and product development managers who work for American Cyanamid, categorized in sections covering chemistry, biology, metabolism and residues, environmental fate and product performance. Each chapter has its own bibliography, and appendices give (a) details of the chemical and physical properties, formulations and trade names of imazapyr, imazamethabenz-methyl, imazethapyr and imazaquin, and (b) the scientific and common names of species used in the text. There is a general bibliography of references for each of the above imidazolinone herbicides and a useful subject index. The individual chapters are abstracted separately.
Download or read book Allelopathy written by Manuel J. Reigosa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-28 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many good books in the market dealing with the subject of allelopathy. When we designed the outline of this new book, we thought that it should include as many different points of view as possible, although in an integrated general scheme. Allelopathy can be viewed from different of perspectives, ranging from the molecular to the ecosystem level, and including molecular biology, plant biochemistry, plant physiology, plant ecophysiology and ecology, with information coming also from the organic chemistry, soil sciences, microbiology and many other scientific disciplines. This book was designed to include a complete perspective of allelopathic process. The book is divided into seven major sections. The first chapter explores the international development of allelopathy as a science and next section deals with methodological aspects and it explores potential limitations of actual research. Third section is devoted to physiological aspects of allelopathy. Different specialists wrote about photosynthesis, cell cycle, detoxification processes, abiotic and biotic stress, plant secondary metabolites and respiration related to allelopathy. Chapters 13 through 16 are collectively devoted to various aspects of plant ecophysiology on a variety of levels: microorganisms, soil system and weed germination. Fundamental ecology approaches using both experimental observations and theoretical analysis of allelopathy are described in chapters 16 and 17. Those chapters deal with the possible evolutionary forces that have shaped particular strategies. In the section named “allelopathy in different environments”, authors primarily center on marine, aquatic, forest and agro ecosystems. Last section includes chapters addressing application of the knowledge of allelopathy.

Book Synopsis Stormwater Infiltration by : Bruce K. Ferguson
Download or read book Stormwater Infiltration written by Bruce K. Ferguson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stormwater infiltration is the most complete approach to stormwater management. Only infiltration can simultaneously solve problems of water quality, flood control, streambank erosion, aquifer recharge, and maintenance of downstream base flows and wetland hydroperiods. Stormwater Infiltration is the first book to explain the principles of natural science on which infiltration is based, how to apply infiltration to any region of the country, and what kinds of results can be expected. It brings into one publication the complete range of necessary information on soils, vegetation, infiltration, hydrology, design criteria, site layout, construction process for surface and subsurface basins, porous paving materials, feasibility, maintenance, and performance. It draws more than half a century's actual experiences from all over the United States to place stormwater management in a context of environmental balance and quality for human life."--Provided by publisher.
