This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Movement disorders in children: an update with video recordings covers a wide range of disease conditions that are characterized by involuntary movements possibly associated with signs of more diffuse dysfunction of the nervous system. These include both genetically determined and acquired conditions, running a clinical course that may be progressive, static, or paroxysmal. Recent years have witnessed growing interest in the movement disorders of children. There has been an increase in our understanding of the pathogenesis of these disorders, and new perspectives for their diagnosis and treatment have emerged. This book aims to provide neurologists, paediatricians, and specialists in developmental medicine with a comprehensive update on these issues. The more recent advances on dystonias, neurotransmitter disorders, chorea and PANDAS, tics and Tourette syndrome, paroxysmal dyskinesias, psychogenetic movement disorders and other specific syndromes and diseases—such as opsoclonus-myoclonus, rapid onset dystonia-parkinsonism, pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration and Rett syndromes—are illustrated, and current topics on genetics, biochemistry, brain imaging, physiological investigations, quantitative assessment, and the pharmacological and surgical treatment of childhood movement disorders are covered. The book also includes rich video documentation which we trust may be a helpful and crucial contribution for all professionals involved in the field of movement disorders, where the correct semiologic definition of the different conditions is one of the most important but problematic steps in the diagnostic work-up.

Book excerpt: Hyperkinetic movement disorders comprise a range of diseases characterized by unwanted and uncontrollable, or poorly controllable, involuntary movements. The phenomenology of these disorders is quite variable encompassing chorea, tremor, dystonia, myoclonus, tics, other dyskinesias, jerks and shakes. Discerning the underlying condition can be very difficult given the range and variability of symptoms. But recognizing the phenomenology and understanding the pathophysiology are essential to ensure appropriate treatment. Hyperkinetic Movement Disorders provides a clinical pathway for effective diagnosis and management of these disorders. The stellar international cast of authors distils the evidence so you can apply it into your practice. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parkinson's disease (PD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive motor disability with a spectrum of non-motor symptoms. Similar to Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, Huntington's disease, and other aging-related movement disorders are widespread in the elderly with relatively unideal medicine-treatment effects. In recent years, deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been established as an effective treatment for PD and other aging-related movement disorders, especially with motor symptoms. However, there are still many problems to be solved in research work and clinical practice in this field. For example, it is unclear regarding the most effective stimulation targets or the underlying mechanism of DBS. And it is still unknown how to choose the optimal targets among STN, GPi, PSA, VIM, etc, or if we could choose the nerve fiber for stimulation besides the nuclei, And despite wearable sensors could be a powerful tool for the digital evaluation of movement disorders or provide the feedback biomarkers for DBS, the closed-loop biomarkers for DBS are still lacking. Furthermore, apart from PD, the DBS treatment in gene-related dystonia, Huntington's disease, and other movement disorders also needs to be further explored.
