Book excerpt: The most dangerous beasts walk on two legs… Skye Fargo knows that the mountain country of the Yellowstone River is full of wildlife. But Fargo isn’t going to stand by and let a foxy young beauty looking for her brother be threatened by some mad-dog killers. Seems a boorish greenhorn is scouring the territory for specimens to put in his own private zoo. And the no-good skunks he hired as guides have the bad luck of crossing paths with Fargo one too many times. Now the Trailsman must show the rabid wolves that when it comes to survival, he’s leader of the pack…

But the trail is anything but peaceful—and when the expedition reaches their destination, they find the U.S. delegation dead and mutilated. All signs point to the Cherokee Nighthawk Society—a band of elite warriors who can kill a man fifty ways before he hits the ground. But Fargo reads the signs like no one can, and his keen eye tells him that someone is setting up the Cherokee for a massacre…

Book excerpt: Most folks thought the Wild West had faded into memory by 1917. But for the Tacker Gang, there was still plenty of opportunity to make a dishonest living in the wide-open spaces of a still-young country. Until the law caught up with them--and offered them a choice. Serve your country or serve 20 years. After a lawless life in the desert, the war in Europe was a whole new world. And it was wilder than anything they'd ever seen before.

Book excerpt: A 2017 Choice Outstanding Academic Title Intersectionality intervenes in the field of intersectionality studies: the integrative examination of the effects of racial, gendered, and class power on people's lives. While "intersectionality" circulates as a buzzword, Anna Carastathis joins other critical voices to urge a more careful reading. Challenging the narratives of arrival that surround it, Carastathis argues that intersectionality is a horizon, illuminating ways of thinking that have yet to be realized; consequently, calls to "go beyond" intersectionality are premature. A provisional interpretation of intersectionality can disorient habits of essentialism, categorial purity, and prototypicality and overcome dynamics of segregation and subordination in political movements. Through a close reading of critical race theorist Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw's germinal texts, published more than twenty-five years ago, Carastathis urges analytic clarity, contextual rigor, and a politicized, historicized understanding of this widely traveling concept. Intersectionality's roots in social justice movements and critical intellectual projects--specifically Black feminism--must be retraced and synthesized with a decolonial analysis so its radical potential to actualize coalitions can be enacted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Riddle has lived her entire life inside a patriarchal commune led by her father. There are many rules, but the most important one, 'keep it in the commune', is the most difficult for her to follow... especially since the only people willing to champion her cause live on the outside. When Emily learns her father has promised her to Lorenzo, a perverted man who has plans for her that extend well beyond marriage and kids, she rebels. Regardless of the consequences, she refuses to marry someone who'd rather beat her than caress her. A day of hooky that starts out as a tiny act of defiance - sneaking out of the commune for a swim - turns into a day filled with hope. After spending time with Levi, a man camping near the lake, she finds what true romance looks like and catches a glimpse into a future that's filled with love and admiration rather than hate and submission. That tiny peek is enough to change the course of Emily's existence and makes it nearly impossible for her to go back to the commune and pretend she'll ever be able to tolerate the life chosen for her instead of the life she longs for. One that includes Levi. Fighting to escape the commune, its leaders, and her fiancé proves to be more dangerous than Emily expected. The secrets she knows, as the leader's daughter, will either follow her to the grave or send her - and Levi - there.

Book excerpt: "With anxious dread have I avoided thee, Thou haunting evil of my early days, Yet by some trick of Fate we meet again; I pray thee, sir, let me go far away. And place the roaring seas between us twain, There is but sorrow in our comradeship." It was the high road to the village of Garsworth, wide, deeply rutted, and somewhat grass-grown, with a tall hedge of yellow-blossomed gorse on the one side, and on the other a ragged, broken fence, over which leaned a man absorbed in meditation, his eyes fixed upon the setting sun. The fence, rotten and moss-tufted, ran along the edge of a little hill, the slope of which had been lately reaped, and was now covered with bristly yellow stubble, variegated by bare-looking patches of brownish earth.
