Book excerpt: PONGS ‘N SOEMS Pongs: Could be Songs and Soems: Could be Poems PONGS ‘N SOEMS is a 60-year collection of PONGS (could-be songs) and SOEMS (could-be poems) but all are lyrics. This work is aimed at the individual looking for material his/her next million seller. As well, this compilation will speak to songwriting/poem writing hobbyists. It endeavours to encourage journaling thoughts, ideas, notions no matter how initially insignificant they seem. Yes, perhaps the multi-million-seller song awaits you, the reader, to pen it. If not that, then one may ignite a flair for writing anything from simple lyrics to free verse poetry of the loftiest kind. Herein between the covers lie several melodies which the guitarist can play. On youtube (type in Frederick Mundle youtube) you can see and hear how some PONGS became studio recorded songs and how some SOEMS ended up being set to music. This author’s pastime netted him some incredible collaborating connections musically from Chicago, to Detroit, Windsor and Toronto, ON, Montreal, PQ, as well as from Eastern NB and Gaspe, PQ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How medieval songbooks were composed in collaboration with the community—and across languages and societies: “Eloquent…clearly argued.”—Times Literary Supplement Today we usually think of a book of poems as composed by a poet, rather than assembled or adapted by a network of poets and readers. But the earliest European vernacular poetries challenge these assumptions. Medieval songbooks remind us how lyric poetry was once communally produced and received—a collaboration of artists, performers, live audiences, and readers stretching across languages and societies. The only comparative study of its kind, Songbook treats what poetry was before the emergence of the modern category poetry: that is, how vernacular songbooks of the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries shaped our modern understanding of poetry by establishing expectations of what is a poem, what is a poet, and what is lyric poetry itself. Marisa Galvez analyzes the seminal songbooks representing the vernacular traditions of Occitan, Middle High German, and Castilian, and tracks the process by which the songbook emerged from the original performance contexts of oral publication, into a medium for preservation, and, finally, into an established literary object. Galvez reveals that songbooks—in ways that resonate with our modern practice of curated archives and playlists—contain lyric, music, images, and other nonlyric texts selected and ordered to reflect the local values and preferences of their readers. At a time when medievalists are reassessing the historical foundations of their field and especially the national literary canons established in the nineteenth century, a new examination of the songbook’s role in several vernacular traditions is more relevant than ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From every “beautiful mornin’” to “some enchanted evening,” the songs of Oscar Hammerstein II are part of our daily lives, his words part of our national fabric. Born into a theatrical dynasty headed by his grandfather and namesake, Oscar Hammerstein II breathed new life into the moribund art form of operetta by writing lyrics and libretti for such classics as Rose-Marie (music by Rudolf Friml), The Desert Song (Sigmund Romberg), The New Moon (Romberg) and Song of the Flame (George Gershwin). Hammerstein and Jerome Kern wrote eight musicals together, including Sweet Adeline, Music in the Air, and their masterpiece, Show Boat. The vibrant Carmen Jones was Hammerstein’s all-black adaptation of the tragic opera by Georges Bizet. In 1943, Hammerstein, pioneer in the field of operetta, joined forces with Richard Rodgers, who had for the previous twenty-five years taken great strides in the field of musical comedy with his longtime writing partner, Lorenz Hart. The first Rodgers and Hammerstein work, Oklahoma!, merged the two styles into a completely new genre—the musical play—and simultaneously launched the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Over the next seventeen years, Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote eight more Broadway musicals: Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music. They also wrote a movie musical (State Fair) and one for television (Cinderella). Collectively their works have earned dozens of awards, including Pulitzers, Tonys, Oscars, Grammys, and Emmys. Throughout his career, Hammerstein created works of lyrical beauty and universal feeling, and he continually strove—sometimes against fashion—to seek out the good and beautiful in the world. “I know the world is filled with troubles and many injustices,” he once said. “But reality is as beautiful as it is ugly . . . I just couldn’t write anything without hope in it.” All of his lyrics are here—850, more than a quarter published for the first time—in this sixth book in the indispensable Complete Lyrics series that has also brought us the lyrics of Cole Porter, Lorenz Hart, Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Frank Loesser. From the young scribe’s earliest attempts to the old master’s final lyric—“Edelweiss”—we can see, read, and, yes, sing the words of a theatrical and lyrical genius.

Book excerpt: Buck's life had been a success. For fifty years everything worked, then it all began to fall apart. He quit his job, knocked about an empty house awkwardly filled by him and his wife, and couldn't think of a way to change anything. Buck started pouring over maps of remote forests; then he bought a donkey; then he decided to plunge headfirst into the wilds of Montana. This is his story, at once unique and paradigmatic. Buck stumbles from hidden valleys and upland ridges to the summit of the Rock Candy Mountain. He comes face to face with terror and love, true friendship and the magic of a young girl's dream. In a quest for that-which-cannot-be-defined, Buck seeks it...and finds it. Bucks journey, and ours with him, are worth taking. Mountain Lyrics is a great read. ~ Mike Donohue Like reading a secret message from my soul. ~ Jerome Leveque This is a page turner as Bucks vision quest takes him to places hes never known existedinside himself. A must read. ~ Milt Rowland

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My story begins as a native Floridian who grew up poor, on welfare, a high school dropout and without a father, who abandoned me at an incredibly early age in my life. But what I have learned in this life is that sometimes we are born in a disadvantaged situation, either being poor or dependent upon federal assistance for food and clothing. Combine that with a broken family structure, this lent itself to a life of struggles and setbacks. I blamed others for how I felt and how my life was turning out. I had a decision to make: I could either decide to remain in the state of blaming others or I could get up and do something about it. I decided to go with the latter, and I hope that you will come to the same decision after hearing my story.
