Book excerpt: Native American Mound Builders During the Early and Late Woodland Periods the early Native American tribes built mounds, mostly in the Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys. There are no written records about the purpose of these mounds, so the reasons for building them remain largely speculative. Adena and Hopewell Culture and Mounds People of both the Adena and later Hopewell cultures inhabited the White River region of Mounds State Park. They constructed several mounds on the bluffs above the river. The mounds are well preserved due to the efforts of some of the earliest American settlers in the area, thus the mounds at the park in in good condition. Camping Mounds State Park has a modern campground equipped with modern restrooms and electric hook ups. A camping trip to the park allows visitors the chance to delve into the history of some of Indiana's earliest inhabitants. Hiking Two of the hiking trails in the park lead through the heart of the mounds complex as well as to the nearby visitor center in the park. camping, hiking, native american mound builders, Adena mounds, Adena culture, Hopewell Culture, native american culture

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who were those people who left virtually no record of their existence but huge earthen mounds? Located in east-central Indiana, Mounds State Park holds an important key to better understanding the entire Midwest's prehistoric past. Studied by such notables as Eli Lilly, the site has only recently begun to reveal its secrets. Converted to a state park in October of 1930, the area has long been a place of mystery, supposition, and intrigue. This extremely well-preserved archaeological site contains several geometrically-shaped earthen mounds constructed well over 2,000 years ago -- some several feet tall, others only inches high. Uncover the park's past with this simple tale of history. Gain a greater knowledge of and appreciation for the people whose names we may never know, but who transformed the land in ways that no one has before or since.

Excerpt: The U.S. state of Indiana has 25 state parks maintained and operated by Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Marion and Clark are the only counties to have two. Brown County, the largest state park, has the greatest number of visitors, followed by Indiana Dunes State Park. Richard Lieber was instrumental in the foundation of the Indiana State Park system. The first state park in Indiana was McCormick's Creek State Park, in Owen County in 1916, followed in the same year by Turkey Run State Park in Parke County. A steady climb in the number of state parks rose in the 1920s, mostly by donation from local authorities to the state government for the purpose of a state park. Of the initial twelve, only Muscatatuck State Park is no longer a state park, having been given back to Jennings County in 1968. It was during the Great Depression of the 1930s that much infrastructure was built within the park, constructed by New Deal agencies such as the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress...
