Book excerpt: Les études médicales, sanctionnées par deux concours sélectifs, attirent beaucoup de candidats. Depuis 2004, la Médecine Générale est proposée comme choix à l'Examen National Classant (ENC), ce qui aurait dû revaloriser sa position vis-à-vis des autres spécialités. Cependant les perspectives démographiques restent préoccupantes. Objectifs: notre étude s'intéresse aux raisons de l'attrait de la profession médicale chez les étudiants de PACES de la faculté de Montpellier-Nîmes. Elle tente d'appréhender leurs motivations et leurs représentations de la Médecine Générale. Méthode : étude descriptive, transversale, sous forme d'enquête par questionnaire durant l'année universitaire 2010/2011. Résultats : 401 questionnaires ont été analysés. L'effectif est composé de 70% de filles, 69.33% ont choisi la filière médicale comme premier choix à l'issue du concours. Les deux motivations principales pour s'engager dans les études médicales sont des Motivations Intrinsèques: l'intérêt pour la relation d'aide (39%) et l'intérêt pour le soin (24%). 43 % n'ont pas d'idée de la spécialité souhaitée. 16% se prononcent pour les spécialités chirurgicales, 13% pour le groupe gynécologie-pédiatrie, 10% pour la Médecine Générale. Interrogés sur la spécialité de médecine générale, 36% l'envisageraient et 28% répondent par la négative avec comme arguments le désir d'une autre spécialité (51 %), une représentation négative de la spécialité (35%), la qualité de vie insuffisante et la pénibilité des conditions d'exercice n'arrivent qu'en troisième position (8%). Les étudiants ont une représentation juste mais incomplète de la Médecine Générale : médecine de proximité, exercice ambulatoire libéral, champ d'exercice diversifié et rôle de santé publique sont des notions acquises. Mais les conditions de travail et l'existence d'une filière universitaire restent méconnues. Conclusion : Les étudiants de PACES avancent l'aspect relationnel de la profession pour expliquer leur choix d'étude. Leur vision de la Médecine Générale est floue. Pour favoriser un choix éclairé de cette spécialité, un rôle d'information important est à jouer par la nouvelle génération de médecins généralistes

The Malleus is an important text and is frequently quoted by authors across a wide range of scholarly disciplines. Yet it also presents serious difficulties: it is difficult to understand out of context, and is not generally representative of late medieval learned thinking. This, the first book-length study of the original text in English, provides students and scholars with an introduction to this controversial work and to the conceptual word of its authors. Like all witch-theorists, Institoris and Sprenger constructed their witch out of a constellation of pre-existing popular beliefs and learned traditions. Therefore, to understand the Malleus, one must also understand the contemporary and subsequent debates over the reality and nature of witches. This book argues that although the Malleus was a highly idiosyncratic text, its arguments were powerfully compelling and therefore remained influential long after alternatives were forgotten. Consequently, although focused on a single text, this study has important implications for fifteenth-century witchcraft theory. This is a fascinating work on the Malleus Maleficarum and will be essential to students and academics of late medieval and early modern history, religion and witchcraft studies.
