Book excerpt: This is the first book to focus on the social motivations for codeswitching, that is, the use of two or more linguistic varieties in the same conversation. Using data from multilingual African contexts (mostly from conversations studied in Kenya) Carol Myers-Scotton advances a theoretical argument which aims at a general explanation of these motivations. She treats codeswitching as a type of skilled performance, not as the 'alternative strategy' of a person who cannot carry on a conversation in the language in which it began. When engaging in codeswitching, speakers exploit the socio-psychological values which have come to be associated with different linguistic varieties in a specific speech community: the switch codes in order to negotiate a change in social distance between themselves and other participants in the conversation, conveying this negotiation through the choice of a different code. Switching between languages, Professor Myers-Scotton suggests, has a good deal in common with making different stylistic choices within the same language: it is as if bilingual and multilingual speakers have an additional style at their command when they engage in codeswitching between different languages.

Book excerpt: This study observed the occurrence of code switching among six Arabic-English Saudi bilingual children living in the United States at the time of the study. A mixed-methods research design using quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques was applied in order to investigate the presence of code switching in the speech of the participants, the different types of code switching involved, and their social motivations. Three research instruments were used for the purpose of the study: a parental questionnaire, language portraits, and recorded Arabic and English storytelling sessions. Syntactic and sociolinguistic approaches were employed; the Markedness Model by Myers-Scotton (1993) was adopted to examine the social motivation behind code switching, and Poplack's (1980) classification of code switching was used to identify code switching patterns. Overall, the findings revealed the participant's dominant and preferred language to be English, the presence of intrasentential and intersentential code switching, a preference for intersentential over intrasentential code switching, the function of code switching, and the role of social motivations in language choice and code switching. Moreover, this study contributes to the current research on the Markedness Model among bilingual children by providing evidence for Myers-Scotton (1993) as marked and unmarked code switching was observed among the participants. This study also agrees with previous studies (e.g. Myers-Scotton, 2002; Bolonyai, 2005; Fuller, Elsman, & Self, 2007) that argued that bilingual children are rational and social actors who choose a given code intentionally to achieve certain social goals in a given interaction.

Even if the idea that a child should learn to answer in the appropriate language is per se right, it was the context in which it all happened which was wrong. Some people in my town believed that in a German-speaking kindergarten Italian shouldn’t be used as it would contaminate the language of other children. This is not a single case but part of a large number of misconceptions which have led parents and teachers to think of code-switching as a kind of linguistic disorder and, consequently, sending children to professionals, who might also not fully understand the field of code-switching. This can lead to wrong assumptions, stigmatizing children who are intrinsically ‘normal’ as ‘bad’ speakers. All this fears don’t apply to adults’ code-switching as it is seen as something more rule-governed. That is why the aim of this research paper is to present several arguments to support the idea that code-switching in multilingual children is not the result of a lack of proficiency, but rather the consequence of a strategic use of both languages to facilitate the achievement of linguistic and social goals (Bullock 2009). Furthermore, it will be argued that there are not so many differences between adults’ and children’s code/switching and that, as a consequence, they should be treated equally. To demonstrate this, several studies will be presented in which adults’ but, first and foremost, children’s code-switching fulfil a complex socio-pragmatic function. In the end, evidence shall be given to prove that a third grammar of code-switching doesn’t exist, and that therefore no description of a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way of code-switching can be postulated. This all shall attest that code-switching is an individual process which changes not only because of the different languages involved but also because of cultural phenomena. After a short definition of the term code-switching and its historical background, my personal connection to it will be presented, followed by the last two sections explaining the difference between adults’ and children’s code-switching through a juxtaposition of both.

Book excerpt: This research attempts to expose the patterns of language behavior of two five-year old bilingual children through the analysis of the code-switching and code-mixing occurrences in their everyday conversational interactions. The goal of the study is to analyze the code choice and the motivation behind such pattern in order to see whether there are any differences between the two case studies, and most of all, what is causing these differences in linguistic behavior to occur. Data used in analysis was collected during informal conversations recorded in home domain of the two families studied. The recorded data along with the observational notes collected was then analyzed sentence by sentence and separated into several dyads in order to understand the relation between the children's code-switching/code-mixing and the interlocutor. It is concluded that most common motivation behind their code choice is solidarity -establishing "we code", referential, directive, and reactive to positive/ negative face and power. The major difference between the two children's language behavior regarding code choice is rather in the patterns of code-switching versus code-mixing. The boy, being a natural bilingual who acquired the second language (L2) simultaneously is more prone to code-switch in certain situations. On the other hand, the girl, who acquired L2 consecutively and therefore adopted the syntax of Serbian language, uses more code-mixing during her conversational interactions. This showed close connection of the linguistic behavior with the linguistic environment exposing essential mechanisms of children's ability to adjust their language skills to their conversational needs.

The study focused on the following questions: 1) What are the functions of code switching used by secondary students in English classes at the Modern American School? 2) How does code switching affect the linguistic aspects of language varieties among secondary students in English classes at the Modern American School? Statistical analysis was conducted for the collected data. The percentages and means were calculated for the questionnaires, and the lesson observations were described in words. Results of the study revealed that some of the students use code switching in order to add a comic sense to his/her utterances, and therefore attract the interlocutors attention. Despite the fact that they study at an international school, they switch codes as it is hard to find proper equivalents especially to culturally loaded terms. Also, students switch codes in order to avoid misunderstanding. Students feel comfortable and confident in using more than one language within the same discourse. However, students believe that code switching is used haphazardly and unconsciously without paying attention to the syntactic rules that govern each language. The results elucidated different topics on which code switching takes place. The most prominent topics were religion and emotional issues. Furthermore, the general applicability of the MLF and the MM to the CS data from different bilingual communities will be explored. At the beginning, the concept of code-switching and its typology will be introduced. In section 3.2, the MLF will be presented in order to define morphological and syntactical constraints for CS. Then, in the frame of the MM, possible motivations for CS will be examined. These are followed by the perspective on the relation of both models to each other. In Chapter 4, using the MLF and the MM, CS data from several bilingual communities will be analysed and finally, problematic issues in both models will be discussed. While monolinguals can vary their utterances by means of changing styles within a language or a dialect, through speech rate or intonation, bilinguals can do the same in both languages, plus they can switch between the languages. Thus, the speech of bilingual speakers is interesting for research. Many researchers have examined this language contact phenomenon and have tried to explain how and why people code-switch. The study of CS has developed in two main directions: structural, that is grammatical and sociolinguistic, also called pragmatic aspect. Originally, CS was considered to be the result of poor language competence in both languages. Later, in the 1970s, linguists, for example, Gumperz (1972) and Pfaff (1979), suggested that mixing between languages does not occur randomly but rather follows certain grammatical rules. Many grammatical models have been proposed to account for the grammatical constraints in CS.
