With their added support, volunteers bring new energy and new ideas that can stimulate growth and success. This study developed a set of recommendations for public gardens that wish to remodel and evolve their volunteer programs to become more influential and meaningful to both the garden and its volunteers. Interviews were conducted with nine volunteer managers around the U.S. who are currently or have recently renovated their volunteer programs. The documentation of their challenges and success provides pertinent information for other professionals attempting a program evolution. To create a basis for the study's recommendations, these actions have been compared with other popular volunteer management practices. A questionnaire was also sent to volunteers at each of the nine gardens to gather information about their motivations and satisfactions concerning their volunteering experience. This data was compared to the actions taken by volunteer managers in an effort to determine whether or not the improvements were recognized by the volunteers. The research data from the volunteer managers identified universal components of a successful volunteer program, including the importance of the leader of the volunteer program and his/her actions involved in recruitment, training, evaluation, and recognition. Patterns and outliers became clear through this research, and concluding recommendations establish applicable ideas for newly appointed and seasoned volunteer managers at public horticulture institutions.

They also cover a host of interrelated subjects and responsible organization of such activities as creating a childrens garden, horticultural therapy, conservatories, zoological gardens, and parks, hence, administration of multidimensional public gardens. Nearly 500 full color plates representing illustrations from gardens in more than 30 countries are provided to assist and guide students and other interested individuals with history and the fundamental issues of public garden management. The 15 chapters begin with the need for public gardens, types of public gardens, historical backgrounds, as well as design diversity. Numerous quotations are included from many garden lovers, landscape architects, philosophers, and others. The boundary between botanical and zoological gardens and parks is no longer as distinct as it once was. In part it is because a garden is not a garden without plants and in part it has become apparent that for all practical intents and purposes all animals need plants for their survival. Visitors of zoological gardens expect to see more than just animals; zoos are landscaped grounds. Moreover, most communities find it financially difficult to simultaneously operate a botanical garden or an arboretum as well as a zoological garden and city parks. It is estimated that one-fourth of all public and private schools in the U.S. have a school garden. Funding, teacher involvement, support of the principal, volunteer help, garden coordination, maintenance assistance and site availability are all factors found to contribute to the success of school gardens and are also found to be the barriers to sustainability of school gardens. Many of these challenges can be overcome with the support of volunteers. Little is known however, about individuals who volunteer their time to a school garden program and more importantly no research has investigated the specific variables influencing volunteer retention in an after-school garden club program setting. A case-study of long-term adult after-school garden club program volunteers was conducted to determine the variables affecting one's decision to continue volunteering after one semester with a program of this type. Twenty long-term after-school garden club program volunteers were interviewed. Interview responses were grouped into main theme and subtheme categories using NVivo, a qualitative analysis software. Main themes that had responses from at least 95% of the volunteers participating in the case-study, were isolated for further analysis. The top five subthemes for each of these isolated main themes were assessed and four of these main themes were found to have similar top five subthemes. These subthemes and the long-term volunteer demographics were then used to determine the variables affecting volunteer retention in an after-school garden club setting. Age, marital status and level of education were all found to affect length of volunteer service. Organizational commitment, positive volunteer relations, organizational support, learning opportunities and the opportunity to work with children all contributed to the decision of after-school garden club program volunteers to continue volunteering after one semester of service. Furthermore, it can be concluded that these volunteers continued to volunteer because their initial motivations, expectations and/or needs were met through their participation in the program.

Book excerpt: To better understand the value of those who engage in environmental stewardship of natural areas, we studied volunteer steward's motivation to participate, their sustainable behaviors and attitudes toward stewardship-related constructs. Specifically, we designed and conducted a survey of volunteers who work as stewards in urban natural areas in Portland, Oregon. We hypothesize that as volunteer frequency increases: participants will be more motivated to participate for environmental reasons, volunteers will be more likely to feel a strong connection to the stewardship site, participants will be more likely to engage in public pro-environmental behaviors, and their level of environmental literacy will increase. Participants were sampled using a face-to-face survey methodology over the course of late winter and spring of 2012 during 18 different Portland Parks and Recreation sponsored stewardship events. We examined the motivations, attitudes and behaviors of the volunteers, and devised appropriate management implications for those organizing volunteer efforts. We equated a three-tiered typology of environmental literacy, based upon the frequency of volunteer participation, and analyzed our survey data using a principal component analysis, generalized linear models, and a qualitative coding analysis. The most frequent participants showed a higher likelihood of participation in public environmental behaviors, whereas participants at all frequency levels were also likely to participate in private environmental behaviors, such as removing invasive plants in one's yard. Volunteers across all frequencies of participation were motivated to engage in stewardship events by a desire to help the environment. By understanding volunteers' motivations and linked behaviors, park managers may gain insights about the recruitment, retention, and messaging of volunteers upon whom they may depend to achieve restoration goals. We recommend considering volunteers' motivations and benefits derived from participation in messaging to recruit and retain volunteers. Additionally, park managers should take advantage of educational opportunities linked to stewardship events, such as training programs and chances for volunteer mentorship.

Book excerpt: The Iowa Community Tree Steward (ICTS) Program is a volunteer-training extension program based on a premise of "trading" training for volunteer service. This program trains volunteers to care for trees. Following training, volunteers are expected to engage in planting and pruning trees, giving advice to neighbors, and advocating for trees and tree care in their communities. However, volunteer engagement in terms of hours of service is variable, leading to inconsistent results in community tree maintenance. The objectives of this study were to: (i) assess factors affecting Tree Stewards' motivation to contribute volunteer hours, and (ii) examine the relationships between motivational factors and participants' level of activity. A mail-questionnaire was used to query ICTS participants about five motivational factors - values, understanding, personal development, community concern, and esteem enhancement. A majority of respondents strongly agreed with statements related to understanding, followed by values. Respondents did not agree as strongly with statements about personal development, community concern, and esteem enhancement. Respondents' level of agreement with statements related to motivation and advocacy were used in independent regression models to examine their relationships to three measures of volunteer service - number of hours served, number of activities engaged in, and number of types of collateral volunteering. Strong relationships were detected between values and collateral volunteering, between personal development and both number of hours and number of activities and between advocacy and number of hours served. Extension programming can be modified to directly address factors that lead to more consistent and on-going engagement of volunteers.
