Herbert Spencer has well said: "Exhaustive observation is an element of all great success. It is not to artists, naturalists, and men of science only that it is needful; it is not only true that the skillful physician depends on it for the correctness of his diagnosis, and that to the good engineer it is so important that some years in the workshop are prescribed for him; but we may see that the philosopher also is fundamentally one who observes relationships of things which others had overlooked, and that the poet is one who sees the fine facts in nature which all recognize when pointed out, but did not before remark. Nothing requires more to be insisted on than that vivid and complete impressions are all-essential." More than a score of years ago, Chancellor F. H. Snow, of the University of Kansas, wrote: "It is because the power of observation is not properly trained at the time of its greatest activity that so many of our 'most highly' educated college graduates find themselves far inferior to self-educated artisans in knowledge of the common things of life. The activity of the observing faculty begins in infancy, and should continue through the entire period of childhood and youth.
