Book excerpt: * Mothmeister's second book, more unearthly than the first* Extremely popular Belgian duo whose work combines taxidermy, photography and a love for the lurid and the otherworldly* Their first book, Weird and Wonderful Post-Mortem Fairy Tales (2018), sold out, and is out of print* "Their eerie photos of human-animal hybrids walking wonderfully surreal landscapes thumb their noses at traditional beauty standards." - VICEIn Dark & Dystopian Post-Mortem Fairy Tales, Mothmeister pays homage to the muses who have sparked their alienating dream world. From artists worldwide, legendary figures, their collection of taxidermy to lurid places where their figures were born, such as the catacombs of Palermo, Pyramiden or the disaster area around Chernobyl. A special fairy tale world that flirts with the morbid, religious and grotesque and in which stuffed animals are brought back to life in an extraordinary way.

Book excerpt: Join acclaimed photographer Georgianna Lane and explore the flower markets, gardens, and floral boutiques of London in this full-color celebration of the flora of England’s capital. London in Bloom showcases the floral abundance of the city’s extraordinary parks, gardens, florists, and flower markets. In this companion to her popular books Paris in Bloom and New York in Bloom, Georgianna Lane takes us on a romantic floral tour of London, juxtaposing luscious blooms with intricate floral details found in iconic architecture. The book also includes: A detailed list of recommended parks, gardens, markets, and floral designers A spring tour of blossoms and blooms A field guide of common spring-blooming trees and shrubs Step-by-step instructions for creating a London-style bouquet And more Lane offers a practical travel guide for anyone planning to see London in bloom in real life. She plans out a tour of spring blossoms, with a field guide for identifying flowering trees and shrubs. She even includes a list of addresses for her favorite parks, gardens, floral boutiques, and flower markets. Lane writes, “No place, real or imagined, enchants quite like an English garden. The ornate gates, the tumbling roses, the winding paths, and the sunlight winking through branches of delicate blossoms have long inspired poetry and romance. . . . Some are intimate and secret, with secluded corners and mysterious pools where dragonflies hover or fantastic creatures might even dwell. Others are impressive and majestic, their rolling parklands reminiscent of an eighteenth-century landscape painting.” For flower lovers and Anglophiles alike, London in Bloom offers a unique and irresistible view of London, a chance to bring “poetry and romance” to your home or to give it as a gift.

Book excerpt: An intriguing visual history of the veneration in European churches and monasteries of bejeweled and decorated skeletons Death has never looked so beautiful. The fully articulated skeleton of a female saint, dressed in an intricate costume of silk brocade and gold lace, withered fingers glittering with colorful rubies, emeralds, and pearls—this is only one of the specially photographed relics featured in Heavenly Bodies. In 1578 news came of the discovery in Rome of a labyrinth of underground tombs, which were thought to hold the remains of thousands of early Christian martyrs. Skeletons of these supposed saints were subsequently sent to Catholic churches and religious houses in German-speaking Europe to replace holy relics that had been destroyed in the wake of the Protestant Reformation. The skeletons, known as “the catacomb saints,” were carefully reassembled, richly dressed in fantastic costumes, wigs, crowns, jewels, and armor, and posed in elaborate displays inside churches and shrines as reminders to the faithful of the heavenly treasures that awaited them after death. Paul Koudounaris gained unprecedented access to religious institutions to reveal these fascinating historical artifacts. Hidden for over a century as Western attitudes toward both the worship of holy relics and death itself changed, some of these ornamented skeletons appear in publication here for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are 70,000 Instagram followers who go crazy for Annie Montgomerie's "beautiful," "amazing," "awesome," dirty-kneed, filthy-sleeved animals of stitched-together vintage bits -- and those are just the ones who are already following her and selling out her every gallery show. With the release of Flocked and Socked: The Art of Annie Montgomerie, her first book, these fans now have a way to share their obsession with their fellow collectors - and something they can actually buy that hasn't already been sold out from under them. (And, yes, when the first printing sells out, we'll make more.)U.K.-based mixed-media artist Annie Montgomerie creates individual and unique sculptures from "upcycled" children's dolls, bits of velvet and leather, vintage buttons and charms - whatever she can find that speaks to her love of styles from horror to twee. The result is a world of animals that sits somewhere between Frankenstein and Peter Rabbit. "I don't mind admirers of my work saying it's cute but I hope my art has more to say. I like to skirt around the outside of dark with a hint of sorrow or regret that goes with the passing of time," she says.Vice described her work as "Hovering between pop culture and fine art ? off-kilter and weird in the same way cats are." Those tens of thousands of social-media followers are more to-the-point with comments like "gorgeous," "magnificent," and "They are all so cuuuute!!!"

Book excerpt: Perfect for fans of Jim Field and Julia Donaldson, Be More Bernard is the brilliant story of a disco bunny who will encourage us all to chase our dreams and embrace our differences. When the other bunnies bounced, I bounced. When they hopped, I hopped. When they slept, I did too. Like them, I dreamed. But MY dreams weren't the same. They were less . . . rabbity. ?Bernard has decided that he's not going to be like all the other bunnies any more. He's not going to twitch his nose and prick his ears. And while others might dream of carrots, Bernard's dreams are altogether more...disco! He starts small, but when he finally gets to groove with grace and jive with joy at Bertie and Brenda's Bunny Ball, Bernard shows the world that being yourself is the very best thing a bunny can be. Book excerpt: Jurgen Ziewe is the acknowledged master of computer-generated fantasy art. He won an international reputation from his mystical Crystal Vision cards, following up that success many bestselling posters including with his Mona Lisa and Creation. This book collects the most stunning of Ziewe's images and, for the first time, reveals the groundbreaking working methods of this pioneer of computer imaging. In New Territories, Ziewe guides the reader through the basics of working on computer instead of canvas, from creating three-dimensional backgrounds and virtual landscapes, to playing with fractals, textures and posing the human figure. The book also provides the insight behind his compelling illustrations -- inspired by Jungian dream theory and New Age symbolism. Ziewe has created landscapes that until now were only possible in the imagination -- from dolphins cavorting in space and metallic superbeings enjoying a virtual picnic to hippies perched on the hood of a VW Beetle, basking in a fractalized sun- set. For all artists graphic designers in and interested expanding their computer design skills as well as fans of fantasy and New Age art, New Territories provides an illuminating look at the artistic medium of the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From bone fetishism in the ancient world to painted skulls in Austria and Bavaria: an unusual and compelling work of cultural history. It is sometimes said that death is the last taboo, but it was not always so. For centuries, religious establishments constructed decorated ossuaries and charnel houses that stand as masterpieces of art created from human bone. These unique structures have been pushed into the footnotes of history; they were part of a dialogue with death that is now silent. The sites in this specially photographed and brilliantly original study range from the Monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Palermo, where the living would visit mummified or skeletal remains and lovingly dress them; to the Paris catacombs; to fantastic bone-encrusted creations in Austria, Cambodia, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Italy, Peru, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, and elsewhere. Paul Koudounaris photographed more than seventy sites for this book. He analyzes the role of these remarkable memorials within the cultures that created them, as well as the mythology and folklore that developed around them, and skillfully traces a remarkable human endeavor.
