Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was the first of Baum's books for children; it is a collection of very short stories, each based upon one of the familiar rhymes of Mother Goose. In the introduction, Baum explains that many of the rhymes "are but bare suggestions, leaving the imagination to weave in the details of the story. . .1 have thought the children might like to have the stories told at greater length.. . [and] for that reason I have written this book." Although he tells us that he has "followed mainly the suggestions of the rhymes", actually the tales are original inventions of the author rather than (as one might suppose from the title) merely expansions of the old nursery rhymes. Dorothy, a little farm girl, appears in the last story, and it is likely that she is the original idea for the Dorothy who later becomes the heroine of Oz.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was Mother Goose? Where did she come from, and when? Although she’s one of the most beloved characters in Western literature, Mother Goose’s origins have seemed lost in the mists of time. Several have tried to pin her down, claiming she was the mother of Charlemagne, the wife of Clovis (King of the Franks), the Queen of Sheba, or even Elizabeth Goose of Boston, Massachusetts. Others think she’s related to mysterious goose-footed statues in old French churches called “Queen Pedauque.” This book delves deeply into the surviving evidence for Mother Goose’s origins – from her nursery rhymes and fairy tales as well as from relevant historical, mythological, and anthropological data. Until now, no one has ever confidently identified this intriguing yet elusive literary figure. So who was the real Mother Goose? The answer might surprise you.

Join Little Bo-Peep, Georgie Porgie, Miss Muffet, the cow that jumped over the moon, and all their pals as they march merrily toward Mother Goose’s house for a cozy slumber party full of stories. And after they are all tucked in, continue to the back of the book and find a special section with your favorite nursery rhymes. "Children will be eager to attend this magical slumber party."—School Library Journal "Allyn’s digitally created illustrations have the warmth of acrylic paintings, and she gives her ethnically diverse young cast round faces, gleaming eyes, and fuzzy heads of hair. The atmosphere is definitely slumber party cozy, especially after the children settle down to hear Mother Goose read stories from her 'famous book.'"—Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mother Goose’s Menagerie was written by Carolyn Wells, and contains a set of beautiful, full-colour, Peter Newell illustrations. The ‘Mother Goose Rhymes’ are a collection of fairy tales and nursery rhymes, originally penned by the legendary (and only some claim imaginary), ‘Mother Goose.’ They have inspired many folklorists and illustrators (including Charles Perrault, Arthur Rackham, Jessie Willcox-Smith and Jennie Harbour) – as well as countless generations of children and parents. The book encompasses favourite tales such as ‘Five Little Pigs’, ‘Mother Hubbard’s Dog’, ‘Mary’s Lamb’ ‘The Three Bears’ and ‘The Cow that Jumped Over the Moon’ – all of which appear in their original translation. Carolyn Wells (1864 – 1942) was an American author and poet, who penned many works of fiction as well as a series of adult mysteries. Her masterful text is accompanied by the drawings of Peter Newell (1862 – 1924); a fellow American artist and author. A native of Illinois, Newell built a reputation for his humorous drawings and poems, which appeared in many magazines, as well writing and illustrating his own children’s books. The combination of Wells’s text and the Peter Newell illustrations, create a wonderful book – to be revelled and delighted in by both young and old alike. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.
