Book Synopsis James Vs Darwin by : Frederick Bauer
Download or read book James Vs Darwin written by Frederick Bauer and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-08-26 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James yearned to weave science and religion into a popular philosophy useful for the everyday life of everyday people of faith. He saw that many of them were defenseless in an increasingly agnostic, even atheistic culture. "Thousands of innocent magazine readers lie paralyzed and terrified in the network of shallow negations which the leaders of opinion have thrown over their souls," he wrote in 1882. To which he added, "If I, . . . like the mouse in the fable, have gnawed a few of the strings of the sophistical net that has been binding down [the human heart's] lion strength, I shall be more than rewarded for my pains." Were he to return, he would surely be even more unhappy with the leaders of opinion, but also with the responses of people of faith, who either seek refuge in untenable fundamentalist reliance on religious scriptures or else view science and religion as two wholly separate, independent spheres of knowledge. Building on three previous books about Jamess philosophy, as well as on three books about related topics, the present text will explain why no one professing to do science in this third millennium can ignore the psychology behind all discoveries.

Book excerpt: George John Romanes, close friend and colleague of Darwin, remains a misunderstood figure in the history of evolutionary science. Although his scientific contributions have been values, his religious journey has been either neglected or misjudged. The recent discovery of the original typescript of his 'Memorial Poem' to Darwin, lost for more than a century and reprinted here for the first time, allows us to enter the mind of a major Darwinian as we watch him struggle to put together faith and science on a positive basis. Book Synopsis The Descent of Darwin by : Alfred Kelly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Germany, more than anywhere else, Darwinism was a sensational success. Setting his analysis against the background of popular science, Kelly follows popular Darwinism as it permeated education, religion, politics, and social thought in Germany. He explains how the popularizers changed Darwin's thought in subtle ways and how these changes colored their perceptions of Darwinism. Among the first purveyors of mass culture, the Germans provide valuable clues as to how seminal ideas move through a society. Originally published in 1981. Book Synopsis Darwinian Natural Right by : Larry Arnhart
Download or read book Darwinian Natural Right written by Larry Arnhart and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how Darwinian biology supports an Aristotelian view of ethics as rooted in human nature. Defending a conception of "Darwinian natural right" based on the claim that the good is the desirable, the author argues that there are at least twenty natural desires that are universal to all human societies because they are based in human biology. The satisfaction of these natural desires constitutes a universal standard for judging social practice as either fulfilling or frustrating human nature, although prudence is required in judging what is best for particular circumstances. The author studies the familial bonding of parents and children and the conjugal bonding of men and women as illustrating social behavior that conforms to Darwinian natural right. He also studies slavery and psychopathy as illustrating social behavior that contradicts Darwinian natural right. He argues as well that the natural moral sense does not require religious belief, although such belief can sometimes reinforce the dictates of nature.

This book was released on 2019-07-06 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustav Landauer (7 April 1870 - 2 May 1919) was one of the leading theorists on anarchism in Germany at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. He was an advocate of social anarchism and an avowed pacifist. In 1919, during the German Revolution, he was briefly Commissioner of Enlightenment and Public Instruction of the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic. He was brutally murdered when this Republic was overthrown by right wing elements. In his work "Skepticism and Mysticism", Landauer offers insights into the continual dialectical role of mystics and skeptics in advancing human knowledge over the ages. In his search for true cognition and the meaning of the world he explores man's psyche and what it means to be a sentient being.
Book Synopsis Darwin's Forgotten Defenders by : David N. Livingstone
Download or read book Darwin's Forgotten Defenders written by David N. Livingstone and published by Regent College Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first systematic investigation of the response of evangelical intellectuals in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to Darwin's evolutionary theories. Despite evidence to the contrary, many people continue to believe that warfare between science and religion over the issue of evolution broke out as soon as Darwin published The Origin of the Species in 1859. In fact, as David Livingstone points out, a substantial number of that era's leaders in science and technology had little trouble reconciling their conservative theological views to Darwin's new theories. The author contends that the sort of pitched battle being waged by the "creationist" movement today has its roots not in the evangelical heritage of the nineteenth century but in the fundamentalism that emerged during the early decades of the twentieth century. This study, which sheds new light on previously neglected aspects of the Darwinian controversies, should have appeal for all who are interested in the relationship between science and religion. -- from back cover
