Die kontrastive Studie dialektaler Flexionsverfahren unter varianten phonologischen Voraussetzungen kann hier zeigen, wo die formale Varianz phonologisch bedingt ist, wo sie das Ergebnis genuin morphologischer Prozesse ist und wo beide Ebenen interagieren. Damit verbindet die Studie die synchrone, diachrone und areale Perspektive.Mit dem Ziel, die Spezifika und Gemeinsamkeiten der nominalen Numerus- und Kasusflexion für die drei Teilräume des Ostoberdeutschen (Ostfränkisch, Nord- und Mittelbairisch) in ihrer Systematik kontrastiv darzustellen, wurde für 37 Ortsdialekte und die syntaktische Einheit aus Definitartikel und Substantiv Datenmaterial des Forschungsprojekts Bayerischer Sprachatlas ausgewertet. Der erste Teil der Datenauswertung fokussiert die Formenbildung des Substantivs, wobei das Ziel der Untersuchung nicht nur in einer Inventarisierung der einzelnen (evtl. dialektraumspezifischen) Markierungsstrategien für Numerus und Kasus besteht, sondern in der Erfassung des Systems. Im Zentrum des zweiten Teils stehen die Struktur der dialektalen Deklinationsklassensysteme und die Frage, inwiefern Deklinationsklassen diachron und synchron zu außerflexivischer Konditionierung tendieren (z.B. durch semantische oder phonotaktisch-prosodische Faktoren). Der dritte Teil der Datenauswertung behandelt schließlich den morphosyntaktischen Kontext und die Frage, wo Numerus und Kasus in der Nominalphrase markiert werden und inwiefern die Markierung durch morphologische oder syntaktische Mittel oder durch Disambiguierung im semantisch-pragmatischen Kontext erfolgt. Abschließend erfolgt eine Diskussion der Ergebnisse vor dem Hintergrund von Grammatikmodellen, die morphologischen Wandel, Sprachgebrauch und Kognition fokussieren. This book comprises a systematic analysis of the nominal inflectional systems of 37 local dialects of the East Upper German variety (i.e., East Franconian, North and Central Bavarian), analyzing data drawn from the research project Bavarian Linguistic Atlas (Bayerischer Sprachatlas). The surveyed dialects show a wide spectrum of variation with regard to dialect-specific phonological change and subsequently exhibit variation at the interface of phonology and morphology, making a contrastive study of dialect morphology worthwhile. The first part of the data analysis focuses on number and case marking strategies, surveying the local dialects’ allomorphs from a synchronic and diachronic perspective. The second part addresses the structure of dialect declension classes, specifically focusing on superior assignment principles. In a third step, noun phrases are included into the analysis, widening the focus to the more general question of whether the coding of plural (or case) information is necessarily attributed to inflectional morphology, or whether plural (or case) coding has to be located at the interface between morphology, syntax and context. Finally, the data analysis is followed by a discussion, covering theoretical (namely usage-based) approaches on morphological change

To attain these objectives, the series will aim for a standard comparable to that of the leading handbooks in other disciplines, and to this end will strive for comprehensiveness, theoretical explicitness, reliable documentation of data and findings, and up-to-date methodology. The editors, both of the series and of the individual volumes, and the individual contributors, are committed to this aim. The languages of publication are English, German, and French. The main aim of the series is to provide an appropriate account of the state of the art in the various areas of linguistics and communication science covered by each of the various handbooks; however no inflexible pre-set limits will be imposed on the scope of each volume. The series is open-ended, and can thus take account of further developments in the field. This conception, coupled with the necessity of allowing adequate time for each volume to be prepared with the necessary care, means that there is no set time-table for the publication of the whole series. Each volume will be a self-contained work, complete in itself. The order in which the handbooks are published does not imply any rank ordering, but is determined by the way in which the series is organized; the editor of the whole series enlist a competent editor for each individual volume. Once the principal editor for a volume has been found, he or she then has a completely free hand in the choice of co-editors and contributors. The editors plan each volume independently of the others, being governed only by general formal principles. The series editor only intervene where questions of delineation between individual volumes are concerned. It presents an up-to-date picture of this phenomenon, characterising its major attributes and addressing neighbouring theoretical concepts like availability, profitability or lexicalisation. Links are also established between those notions and N+N compounding, a word-formation process regarded as very productive but traditionally overlooked in studies of this type. Unlike other productivity surveys, mostly directed at affixation, a corpus of N+N compounds is here compiled to which the mainstream models of productivity are applied. This allows to detect the pros and cons of those proposals and to propose a model of productivity. Two measures, Indicator of Profitability (π) and Trend of Profitability (Π), are introduced which can be applied across word-formation processes and are able to compute their productivity based on semantic categories.

Book excerpt: Austin’s words on page 1 of his seminal work How to do things with words are valid for this study on clause typing in the Old Irish verbal complex: “The phenomenon to be discussed is very widespread and obvious, and it cannot fail to have been already noticed, at least here and there, by others. Yet I have not found attention paid to it specifically”. Old Irish, a regular V1 language, morphologically distinguishes six clause types, to wit, declarative, relative, wh- and polar interrogative, responsive and imperative clause types. After discussing the constituency of the Old Irish verbal complex and the pragmatically marked orders, i.e. cleft-sentence and left-dislocation, the form, function, paradigmatic consistency and syntax of those clause types are then analysed in detail. The other main issues of this study are the descriptively adequate paradigm of clause types and the interaction of clause typing with subordination and with non-verbal predication in Old Irish. This monograph offers a comprehensive view of clause typing, its morphological expression and related phenomena in the earliest Insular Celtic language, and may also contribute to the general consideration of these topics in both the typological and diachronic perspectives.
