Due to COVID-19, I was predominantly homebound for nearly a year. Contracting COVID-19 would have postponed treatments, surgeries, and therapies; so I had to miss family gatherings, even Thanksgiving and Christmas. But mostly, I missed my six grandchildren who all live in the same area as I do. At some point, I started texting my oldest granddaughter, Maeve. I am an early riser, and every morning possible, I sent her a devotion. And that's how this book came to be. I wanted to leave a spiritual legacy by sharing the Bible stories that had always moved my heart. Each morning I had a sense of purpose that filled my soul and let me touch and be with my granddaughter. These devotions have comforted me, strengthened me, and literally carried me through a storm. It would be sweet and precious to me if they somehow helped somebody else too.

Book excerpt: "We had never been on the side of good. In the battle between Good and Evil, Good simply hadn't shown up, or if it had, it turned up too late and without a plan and slunk off, seeing how dangerous things had become. But we did feel that our brand of evil was a better option than Thomas Halyard's. That was the day of Morgan's ninth birthday and the day when the epic battle between Evil and Not-So-Evil began." Thomas Halyard has taken control of the world and nobody seems to mind much. His rule is good and just because there is no good but the good of Thomas Halyard and no evil but for disobedience to Thomas Halyard. He is beginning to remake the world in his own image. Now the Magi who were his loyal lieutenants, Malcolm, Cyril and Serena, who helped him take control, find they must lead the resistance and thwart his evil plans for his granddaughter, Morgan. They must struggle with the contradictions between their evil natures and the love they feel that compels them to do good. And what is the secret of Thomas Halyard's last cursed deck, the Rame Head Deck?

Book excerpt: Strength for All Seasons: A Prayer Devotional offers thirty-one daily topics on specific ways to inspire, encourage, love, and thrive during every season of life via a vibrant life in Christ forged through daily prayer. This lovely devotional provides a Godward foundation to propel Christ-followers into roles that could literally alter this generation and the next, while shoring oneself up for the ever-changing battles that face Christians in every season. Each chapter opens with a passage of Scripture, an edifying quotation, and a brief story written by beloved author Michele Howe. The devotional is split into three sections that provide targeted wisdom on topics such as spiritual strength, physical health and well-being, emotional balance, relational wisdom, and ministry and giftedness. Readers will be able to offer daily comprehensive prayers, confident they are “covering” and equipping themselves and their loved ones through intercession. Closing out the daily prayer format, readers will have several practical recommendations for investing in others’ lives (and their own) through acts of service, volunteer opportunities, and other creative suggestions for developing a close bond. Passing through the seasons of life means navigating diverse challenges and opportunities for different individuals, and yet there are underlying biblical principles that govern all journeys through life.

Book excerpt: Born in Dublin in 1917 to politically active parents, Maeve Brennan's childhood in Ireland was moulded by the cultural ideologies of nationalism and lit by the creative energy of the Abbey and Gate theatres. She was seventeen when her father was appointed to the Irish Legation in Washington DC, where he was Irish Minister throughout World War II. Maeve worked writing fashion copy at Harper's Bazaar until 1949, when William Shawn invited her to join the New Yorker. Tiny, impeccably groomed, and devastatingly witty, in William Maxwell's words, 'to be around her was to see style being invented'. She wrote important fiction, criticism and Talk of the Town pieces for the New Yorker magazine throughout its most influential period in the 1950s and '60s, focusing on memory, migration and identity; her material, and women's lives. As this richly researched and wide-ranging book makes clear, Maeve Brennan's effect on the people who met her, her eye for human behaviour, clothing and domestic settings, her unsparing reading of literature, her memory of home and her courageous life as a woman alone in metropolitan America make her an icon of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: "Casey is a true craftswoman, a writer who beguiles one through the most twisted of plots with a confident and seductive hand. Let The Dead Speak is sharp, complex and gripping to the very end" Alex Marwood, bestselling author of Wicked Girls and The Killer Next Door When eighteen-year-old Chloe Emery returns to her West London home she finds her mother missing, the house covered in blood. Everything points to murder, except for one thing: there’s no sign of the body. London detective Maeve Kerrigan and the homicide team turn their attention to the neighbours. The ultra-religious Norrises are acting suspiciously; their teenage daughter and Chloe Emery definitely have something to hide. Then there’s William Turner, once accused of stabbing a schoolmate and the neighborhood’s favorite criminal. Is he merely a scapegoat, or is there more behind the charismatic façade? As a body fails to materialize, Maeve must piece together a patchwork of testimonies and accusations. Who is lying, and who is not? And soon Maeve starts to realize that not only will the answer lead to Kate Emery, but more lives may hang in the balance. With Let the Dead Speak, Jane Casey returns with another taut, richly drawn novel that will grip readers from the opening pages to the stunning conclusion.
