Book excerpt: Situated where the rolling hills meet the majestic mountains in western North Carolina, Morganton and Burke County share a long, vivid, and unique history together. Having been blessed with natural wonders-from the pristine Lake James and the Catawba River to the mysterious Brown Mountain Lights and the Linville Gorge-Burke County has attracted people of all walks of life for centuries. Morganton and Burke County is a celebratory volume that expresses the fascinating storied past of this county, its seat, and the friendly residents who have called them home. Approximately 200 black-and-white photographs, combined with informative captions, revisit the days when the communities within Burke County were just beginning to sprout and chronicle the memorable events, important personalities, and significant architecture that helped to sculpt today's county. Scenes of dirt roads lined with horses and buggies rather than automobiles and varied views of the long-standing Burke County courthouse are just a few of the images that will no doubt spark the memories of longtime residents, while allowing members of the younger generations to marvel at the way this Tarheel county once looked.

With five schools built, Burke County was a full participant in the historic Rosenwald Movement that improved so many lives, families and communities across the South. The historic Rosenwald (Canal) School still stands in Lake James’ Bridgewater community, west of Morganton. A legacy of the Corpening family of pioneer educators that served Burke for over 25 years, it is the last surviving complete structure to represent Burke's early African-American schools. The discovery of an extant Rosenwald school provides an opportunity to document, or preserve, a structure representing the educational achievements of early African-American citizens. (In 2015, this work received an Award of Excellence from the North Carolina Society of Historians. In 2016, the Burke County Commissioners installed a permanent exhibit at the History Museum of Burke County to commemorate the county's five Rosenwald schools.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The arrival of several hundred Guatemalan-born workers in a Morganton, North Carolina, poultry plant sets the stage for this dramatic story of human struggle in an age of globalization. When laborers' concerns about safety and fairness spark a strike and, ultimately, a unionizing campaign at Case Farms, the resulting decade-long standoff pits a recalcitrant New South employer against an unlikely coalition of antagonists. Mayan refugees from war-torn Guatemala, Mexican workers, and a diverse group of local allies join forces with the Laborers union. The ensuing clash becomes a testing ground for "new labor" workplace and legal strategies. In the process, the nation's fastest-growing immigrant region encounters a new struggle for social justice. Using scores of interviews, Leon Fink gives voice to a remarkably resilient people. He shows that, paradoxically, what sustains these global travelers are the ties of local community. Whether one is finding a job, going to church, joining a soccer team, or building a union, kin and linguistic connections to the place of one's birth prove crucial in negotiating today's global marketplace. A story set at the intersection of globalization and community, two words not often linked, The Maya of Morganton addresses fundamental questions about the changing face of labor in the United States.

Originally Burke County included parts of Lincoln, Rutherford, Buncombe, Yancey, Caldwell, McDowell, Avery, Catawba, Alexander, Watauga, Madison, Mitchell, and Avery Counties. In early North Carolina history, the County Court was the governing body of a particular county, having judicial power as well as overseeing the fiscal and other affairs of the area within its jurisdiction. The types of orders contained within these records include: Deed Conveyances, Road Orders, Estate Administrator approvals, Executor appointments of Wills, District Boundaries, Criminal Trials, Debt Trials, Officer's Bonds (Sheriffs, Constables, Commissioners, etc.), Militia Officer recommendations, County Levies, Magisterial Court Appeals, Fines, County Expenditures and Revenues, Recommendations for Superior Court trials, Overseers of the Poor orders, Slave related orders, and so much more!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times Bestseller Set in the Appalachian wilderness and blending legends and folklore with high suspense, this stellar novel, The Ballad of Frankie Silver, is considered one of McCrumb's crowning achievements. In 1833 Frankie Silver was an eighteen-year-old girl convicted of murder in Burke County, North Carolina. Through a detailed investigation, the local sheriff, and soon all the townsfolk, discover reason to question her guilt---but the wheels of justice were mercilessly unstoppable, and she was hanged. Now, more than a century later, another woman is convicted of murder in the lush hills of Tennessee. Her life is in the hands of Spencer Arrowood, a man who begins to discover that the convictions of these two women have deep and haunting parallels. Although Frankie's fate cannot be changed, there is still time to alter the fate of another innocent woman. In a voice that could only be Sharyn McCrumb's, the worlds of these two murders, these two women, intersect in this densely plotted and lyrical novel—and characters, generations, and history are breathlessly painted against an Appalachian canvas.
