Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize–winning poet and historian recalls his midwestern boyhood in this classic memoir. Born in a tiny cottage in Galesburg, Illinois, in 1878, Carl Sandburg grew with America. As a boy he left school at the age of thirteen to embark on a life of work—driving a milk wagon and serving as a hotel porter, a bricklayer, and a farm laborer before eventually finding his place in the world of literature. In Always the Young Strangers, Sandburg delivers a nostalgic view of small-town life around the turn of the twentieth century and an invaluable perspective on American history.

Book excerpt: Flower Fables was the first work published by Louisa May Alcott and appeared on December 9, 1854. The book was a compilation of fanciful stories first written six years earlier for Ellen Emerson (daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson). The book was published in an edition of 1600 and though Alcott thought it ""sold very well,"" she received only about $35 from the Boston publisher, George Briggs Old-Fashioned Girl is a novel by Louisa May Alcott. It was first serialised in the Merry's Museum magazine between July and August in 1869 and consisted of only six chapters. For the finished product, however, Alcott continued the story from the chapter ""Six Years Afterwards"" and so it ended up with nineteen chapters in all. The book revolves around Polly Milton, the old-fashioned girl who titles the story. Louisa May Alcott (November 29, 1832 - March 6, 1888) was an American novelist and poet best known as the author of the novel Little Women (1868) and its sequels Little Men (1871) and Jo's Boys (1886).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection from the Pulitzer Prize–winning American poet with “a sharp lively wit and a tender approach to the human condition” (The Philadelphia Inquirer). Though he was also renowned as a biographer of Abraham Lincoln, Carl Sandburg was first and foremost a poet—upon his death, President Lyndon B. Johnson said “Carl Sandburg was more than the voice of America, more than the poet of its strength and genius. He was America.” In this outstanding collection of seventy-seven poems, Sandburg eloquently celebrates the themes that engaged him as a poet for more than half a century of writing—life, love, and death. Strongly lyrical, these intensely honest poems testify to human courage, frailty, and tenderness and to the enduring wonders of nature. “A poetic genius whose creative power has in no way lessened with the passing years.” —Chicago Tribune

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl Sandburg (1878-1967) is best known for his poetry (Chicago Poems, Smoke and Steel, and Good Morning, America), his books for children, including Rootabaga Country and Potato Face, and his six-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Illinois author devoted his life to writing, lecturing, reading from his own works, and collecting and singing folk songs. Sandburg often incorporated proverbs, riddles, aphorisms, and vernacular wisdom in lectures, poetry, children's stories, and in his novel Remembrance Rock. Believing that silliness and fun helped preserve sanity and balance, he put together a collection of fanciful anecdotes - alive with alliteration - for his own amusement. Now, more than twenty years after his death, the publication of Fables, Foibles, and Foobles truly reveals, for perhaps the first time, the playful spirit of this great American poet. George Hendrick has compiled the best of these never-before-published nonsensical pieces, which include Flies, Fleas, Flinyons, Flicks, Flooches, Flacks, Flatches, and assorted F-friends deep in dialogue about books and reading; the fascinating worlds of the curious hoomadooms, hongdorshes, and onkadonks; fables to rival Thurber; jokes about every conceivable type of nut; and cameo appearances by Hank the Honk and Flitty the Wid, among others. Robert Harvey's whimsical drawings, scattered throughout the book, illuminate this charming cast of characters.

Book excerpt: ROOTABAGA STORIES were born of Carl Sandburg's imagination and desire to inspire intellectual freedom and curiosity within children's lives. Sandburg creates a world where children's hearts and minds are freed from “normality” and are set free to soar. The land of Rootabaga is inspired by the magic of the American Midwest. Rootabaga country comes alive with friends with fantastic names and creatures like, Corn Fairies, Broom Can Handle It, Hot Dog the Tiger, and the Wind Blue Boy. In Rootabaga “the first words they speak as soon as they learn to make words shall be their names,” he said. “They shall name themselves.” That's how things go in Rootabaga, Axe me no questions, for Please Gimme don't knows-- here the windows are either open or shut, either upstairs or downstairs, just keep your eyes open and keep breathing, believing, and reading. They explore farms, trains, sidewalks, and skyscrapers- embrace the unknown and create the impossible. Potato Face Blind Man, an old minstrel of the Village of Liver-and-Onions, hangs out in front of the local post office telling stories and is the narrative guide in Rootabaga Country. The village of Liver-and-Onions is in Rootabaga Country, and is the silliest, biggest village of Rootabaga land. Potato Face Blind Man sits with his accordion on the corner nearest the post office. With his unseeing eyes, looking out and always searching, he sometimes finds within himself the whole human procession." The lesson of the Rootabaga books is, never restrict a child’s imagination, for it is from the imaginations of minds, unfettered by the rules and conventions taught in schools that amazing, innovative leaps in technology are made. Gene Roddenberry, who wrote the Star Trek series, also conceived of the hand held, mobile communicator, which we know today as cell, or, mobile phone. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book is donated to charities. This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl Sandburg’s ROOTABAGA PIGEONS is the sequel to Rootabaga Stories. This ebook is a most wonderful, magical flight of imagination that could ever be put in a printed format. Wonderfully whimsical in the same genre of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland”, and like Alice in Wonderland, this volume is not to be missed. The whimsical, and sometimes melancholy stories, which often use nonsense language, were originally created for the three Sandburg daughters. The girl’s nicknames were “Spink”, “Skabootch” and “Swipes.” Each name appears in both Rootabaga stories, and offered here in the Rootabaga Pigeons. The Rootabaga stories were born of Sandburg’s desire for American fairy tales to match American childhoods. He felt that the European stories involving royalty and knights were inappropriate in an American setting, and so set his stories in the fictionalized Rootabaga country-that closely resembles the American Midwest-a place filled with farms, trains, and corn fairies. A large number of the stories are told by the Potato Face Blind Man, an old minstrel from the “Village of Liver-and-Onions” who watches the world go by from in front of the local post office. Originally published in 1923, the second volume of Carl Sandburg's beloved Rootabaga Stories includes tales about "Big People Now" and "Little People Long Ago." The Pulitzer Prize-winning poet wrote these American fairy tales for his children while they were growing up in the American Midwest. This edition contains the illustrations of Maud and Miska Petersham. 10% of the profit from the sale of this ebook will be donated to charities. ================= KEYWORDS/TAGS: Rootabaga Pigeons, fantasy stories, children’s stories, children’s books, folklore, fairy tales, fantasy tales, fables, Balloons, Blind, Blixie blimp, blue, boomers, Bozo, brass, bugs, buttons, cats, clock, corn, corner, Dippy, gold, goose, gringo, Hatrack, Hoo, Horse, Huckabuck, Jonas, king, lumber, moon, morning, people, Peter, pigs, Pony, pop, Potato face, Puffs, queen, Rootabaga land, roses, shadow, silver, sky, snoox, summer, thousand, umbrella, Village, wild, wildcats, wind, Wisp, Yang, yellow, zig-zag, zoom, Spink, Skabootch, Swipes, wonderful, whimsical, carl sandburg, nonsense, childhood, minstrel, liver-and-onions, post office, big people, little people, Pulitzer, prize-winning, American fairy tales, Midwest,
