Book Synopsis Technical Mathematics by : Paul A. Calter
Download or read book Technical Mathematics written by Paul A. Calter and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-03-22 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook has been in constant use since 1980, and this edition represents the first major revision of this text since the second edition. It was time to select, make hard choices of material, polish, refine, and fill in where needed. Much has been rewritten to be even cleaner and clearer, new features have been introduced, and some peripheral topics have been removed. The authors continue to provide real-world, technical applications that promote intuitive reader learning. Numerous fully worked examples and boxed and numbered formulas give students the essential practice they need to learn mathematics. Computer projects are given when appropriate, including BASIC, spreadsheets, computer algebra systems, and computer-assisted drafting. The graphing calculator has been fully integrated and calculator screens are given to introduce computations. Everything the technical student may need is included, with the emphasis always on clarity and practical applications.
Book Synopsis Leonardo Pisano (Fibonacci) by : L. E. Sigler
Download or read book Leonardo Pisano (Fibonacci) written by L. E. Sigler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Squares by Fibonacci is a gem in the mathematical literature and one of the most important mathematical treatises written in the Middle Ages. It is a collection of theorems on indeterminate analysis and equations of second degree which yield, among other results, a solution to a problem proposed by Master John of Palermo to Leonardo at the Court of Frederick II. The book was dedicated and presented to the Emperor at Pisa in 1225. Dating back to the 13th century the book exhibits the early and continued fascination of men with our number system and the relationship among numbers with special properties such as prime numbers, squares, and odd numbers. The faithful translation into modern English and the commentary by the translator make this book accessible to professional mathematicians and amateurs who have always been intrigued by the lure of our number system.

Book Synopsis Hypercomplex Numbers by : I.L. Kantor
Download or read book Hypercomplex Numbers written by I.L. Kantor and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-09-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with various systems of "numbers" that can be constructed by adding "imaginary units" to the real numbers. The complex numbers are a classical example of such a system. One of the most important properties of the complex numbers is given by the identity (1) Izz'l = Izl·Iz'I· It says, roughly, that the absolute value of a product is equal to the product of the absolute values of the factors. If we put z = al + a2i, z' = b+ bi, 1 2 then we can rewrite (1) as The last identity states that "the product of a sum of two squares by a sum of two squares is a sum of two squares. " It is natural to ask if there are similar identities with more than two squares, and how all of them can be described. Already Euler had given an example of an identity with four squares. Later an identity with eight squares was found. But a complete solution of the problem was obtained only at the end of the 19th century. It is substantially true that every identity with n squares is linked to formula (1), except that z and z' no longer denote complex numbers but more general "numbers" where i,j, . . . , I are imaginary units. One of the main themes of this book is the establishing of the connection between identities with n squares and formula (1).

Download or read book Two Square Miles written by Bill Hayes and published by Cortero Publishing. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clawson, Michigan is a small town-only 2.4 square miles. Once little more than two sawmills and a few farms, it was eventually captured by the urban sprawl of Detroit. In the years following WW-II the town rapidly grew as large numbers of homes were built for the blue collar workers needed to fuel the auto and manufacturing plants of the post-war boom. There is, however, little remarkable in that. It's the story of thousands of small towns-places from which you would expect very little. But that would be a mistake. Those two square miles wound up producing an extraordinary number of truly remarkable and gifted people. In an area smaller than what would be needed for a few good sized urban shopping centers, it somehow managed to produce a host of professional athletes, innovative business people, writers, and major players in the arts and entertainment industries. This does not include the hundreds of doctors, lawyers and other professionals-nor the tens of thousands of simple, honest, hard-working people-who got their start there. Clawson got the job done the way most small towns do-in a simple, off-hand, no nonsense, blue-collar kind of way. It represents a value system and a way of life that seems to be evaporating in our modern high-tech world. Yet, despite it all, the city remains as a symbol of everything that is right with America.

Book excerpt: Since 2013, mathematicians from around the world have made dramatic progress on a problem in number theory that goes back centuries, the Twin Primes Conjecture, which asserts that there are infinitely many pairs of prime numbers that differ by 2 (for example, 17 and 19 is such a pair). This book describes two stories: that of the recent work on the Twin Primes Conjecture, and in parallel the related ideas around primes from the previous two thousand years ofmathematics.
