He loves football. He is crazy about Star Wars. But Hebrew school? No, thank you. Avery would rather have his arms sliced off with a lightsaber than sit through one more day of Hebrew School. He’s only asked about a million times why he has to go, but no one in his family has managed to convince him. And then one day, Rabbi Bob shows up. He is strange, but how strange? And strange how? Piecing together some unusual clues, Avery begins to suspect that this new rabbi might be a Jedi master. Armed with something more powerful than a lightsaber, he sets out to reveal the surprising truth. Going Rogue (at Hebrew School) is a hilarious tale about the deep passions of a 10-year-old boy, Judaism, family, big questions and the surprising journey one can have in pursuit of truth and understanding. A book for any child who questions the purpose of religious school and any parent who has run out of answers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is something deeply problematic about the ways that Jews, particularly in America, talk about “Jewish identity” as a desired outcome of Jewish education. For many, the idea that the purpose of Jewish education is to strengthen Jewish identity is so obvious that it hardly seems worth disputing—and the only important question is which kinds of Jewish education do that work more effectively or more efficiently. But what does it mean to “strengthen Jewish identity”? Why do Jewish educators, policy-makers and philanthropists talk that way? What do they assume, about Jewish education or about Jewish identity, when they use formulations like “strengthen Jewish identity”? And what are the costs of doing so? This volume, the first collection to examine critically the relationship between Jewish education and Jewish identity, makes two important interventions. First, it offers a critical assessment of the relationship between education and identity, arguing that the reification of identity has hampered much educational creativity in the pursuit of this goal, and that the nearly ubiquitous employment of the term obscures significant questions about what Jewish education is and ought to be. Second, this volume offers thoughtful responses that are not merely synonymous replacements for “identity,” suggesting new possibilities for how to think about the purposes and desired outcomes of Jewish education, potentially contributing to any number of new conversations about the relationship between Jewish education and Jewish life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coherent Judaism begins by excavating the theologies within the Torah and tracing their careers through the Jewish Enlightenment of the eighteenth century. Any compelling, contemporary Judaism must cohere as much as possible with traditional Judaism and everything else we believe to be true about our world. The challenge is that over the past two centuries, our understandings of both the Torah and nature have radically changed. Nevertheless, much Jewish wisdom can be translated into a contemporary idiom that both coheres with all that we believe and enriches our lives as individuals and within our communities. Coherent Judaism explains why pre-modern Judaism opted to privilege consensus around Jewish behavior (halakhah) over belief. The stresses of modernity have conspired to reveal the incoherence of that traditional approach. In our post-Darwinian and post-Holocaust world, theology must be able to withstand the challenges of science and history. Traditional Jewish theologies have the resources to meet those challenges. Coherent Judaism concludes by presenting a philosophy of halakhah that is faithful to the covenantal aspiration to live long on the land that the Lord, our God, has given us.

Book excerpt: I had the happy privilege of partly introducing Loris to the Hebrew language. It soon became apparent that she had a rare gift. In short order, she became the "teacher" and added greatly to the entire class. On her own she started tutoring friends, including neighborhood children. She has a beautiful heart full of love for the Bible and others. It does not surprise me to see the creative work she has done. Both she and her book are bound to be a blessing. Professor Don Pickerill Sweeter Than Honey is an amazing series of insights put together by Loris DeMarco. It is more than just some thoughts for devotion. It is a gift with the intention to inspire the body of Christ. The Hebrew application to the Word is as the title "Sweeter Than Honey" ...oh how sweet! The richness presented in her commentary is something to be thankful for; that which can only come from a heart, which is sincerely in love with the Lord and His Word. Loris has given us so much colour in her writings which I believe will help us the reader understand and enjoy God's Word more as He intends for us to understand and love it. Well done Loris and thanks for your dedication to the Lord and His Word. Ashley Van Wyk General Supervisor of the Foursquare Churches in Western Australia. Loris DeMarco is a born-again, Spirit-filled Christian who fellowships at The White House Community Church with her husband Pino, and has done so for over thirty years: it was formerly The Victoria Park Foursquare Church founded by Jean Darnell. She is employed as Treasurer at the above Church. She also lectures in the White House Training Bible College. Loris and Pino live in Huntingdale, Perth, Western Australia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this book is the study of Abraham Ibn Ezra’s (1089-1167) scientific thought within the historical and cultural context of his times. His scientific contribution may be understood as the very embodiment of ‘the rise of medieval Hebrew science’, a process in which Jewish scholars gradually adopted the holy tongue as a vehicle to express secular and scientific ideas. The first part provides a comprehensive picture of Ibn Ezra’s scientific corpus. The second part studies his linguistic strategy. The third and fourth parts study Ibn Ezra’s introductions to his scientific treatises and the fifth part is devoted to studying four ‘encounters’ with Claudius Ptolemy, the main scientific character featuring in Ibn Ezra’s literary work.
