Addressing a wide range of traditions helping to define the region, ethnomusicologist Jonathon Grasse examines the complexity of Minas Gerais by exploring the intersections of its history, music, and culture. Instruments, genres, social functions, and historical accounts are woven together to form a tapestry revealing a cultural territory’s development. The deep pool of Brazilian scholarship referenced in the book, with original translations by the author, cites over two hundred Portuguese-language publications focusing on Minas Gerais. This research was augmented by fieldwork, observations, and interviews completed over a twenty-five-year period and includes original photographs, many taken by the author. Hearing Brazil: Music and Histories in Minas Gerais surveys the colonial past, the vast hinterland countryside, and the modern, twenty-first-century state capital of Belo Horizonte, the metropolitan region of which is today home to over six million. Through a discussion of the political meaning of mass-mediated music, author K. E. Goldschmitt argues for a shift in scholarly focus--from viewing music as simply a representation of Otherness to taking into account the broader media environment where listeners and intermediaries often have conflicting priorities. We should salute them for providing a clear and comprehensive picture of the interrelationships between regions, disciplines, and elements, both in terms of origin and the possibility of solving the problem. The presentation is presented comprehensively without letting go of the details and context regarding sustainability and the global picture. I am sure that many people, especially those in a strong position, can benefit and be given references from the essential things presented in this book, the great work of both authors, which I am proud of. Prof. Rachmat Witoelar, Indonesia’s President’s Special Envoy for Climate Change (2015 -2019), and advisor to I-SER UI and CAIPSDCC) The concept of sustainable development is a development concept that ensures the fulfillment of the human needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. That is, the idea of sustainable development emphasizes the development of technologies that can increase productivity and reduce the level of damage. The concept of sustainable development is an effort to integrate three aspects of life, namely social, economic, and environmental, in a synergistic relationship supported by infrastructure and institutions. This concept is in line with the avoidance of shell game theory, where shell game theory solves the problem by creating another problem. The book written by Prof. Jatna Supriatna and his colleague, Prof. Ralph Lenz, from the United States on environmentally sustainable development in Indonesia is very well written. It suits students, environmental experts, planning bureaucrats, and legislature members. Plus, those who are doing development planning both at home and abroad. Each environmental problem is described in detail and clarity, and the solution options are given so that sound environmental management can be sustainable Prof. Satryo Brodjonegoro, President of Indonesian Academy of Sciences Indonesia is an archipelago country that harbors natural resources. It is among the countries with the most complete and extensive natural resource base, perhaps trailing only Brazil. Still, using natural resources as input for current production processes has increased yearly depletion. With its abundant natural resources, Indonesia should have become a prosperous country from an economic perspective. But yearly rising levels of natural resource depletion in many regions of the country have occurred without an increase in equitable human welfare—those words that I picked up from Prof. Jatna Supriatna and his friend’s book. I support this book’s aim that environmental sustainability is necessary for Indonesia. Book excerpt: Surveying a Century Ago As it was based on the principles of geometry and trigonometry, surveying may be may be looked upon as a branch of practical mathematics. Hence, it was necessary that land surveyors and hydrographers should have a fair general knowledge, not only of these subjects, but also of all the subjects comprised by the term mathemat ics. In addition, the knowledge of mathematics required in ordinary chain surveying and levelling was not very extensive but in geodetical work, the highest mathematical ability and great organising power were required for a proper conception and supervision of the operations (Threlfall, 1940). Only small area of a few hundred square kilometres can be accurately mapped and surveyed without a frame work, since no difficulty is encountered because of Earth-curvature. In the past, especially in hydrography due to the type of work, surveying was carried out on the principles of ordinary practice, but in a very rough man ner, rapidity of execution being of paramount importance, the permissible error was sometimes large. The relative positions of the main surface features were obtained by aid of portable instruments, such as sextants and lead lines, tide poles, and logships. Sketching, just like military surveying was often filling in the smaller detail. In contrary, survey works done by the national mapping agencies (NMAs) were of a higher-level, and comprised the delimitation of boundaries as well as topographical surveys.
