Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montreal for Tourists S a rule, we in the States, who have never been out of the States, know very little about Montreal - or Canada, either and with many of us, as the late Mr. Billings might say, what we do know is not so. It is for this reason that a first visit to Montreal is frequently in the nature of a sur prise, Shading rapidly into astonishment, admiration, and delight. Here, within a day's or a night's journey from New York, is a distinctly foreign city, Populated largely by those speaking a foreign language; With an architecture substantially different from that to which we are accustomed; A city of churches and cathedrals, of nunneries, monasteries, and convents; A city of great wealth, of massive business strue tures, and magnificent residences; A very old city, as we reckon civic age in America; With quaint Old buildings, and ancient landmarks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montreal Between 1666 and 1668, Jacques Marquette, the great Jesuit missionary and discoverer, was a familiar figure in ville-marie, and he left the banks of the St. Lawrence on his voyage of discovery to the Mississippi. It was to Montreal that Sir William Johnson, of Johnson Hall on the Mohawk, came in 1760, and on the site of the present Bonsecours Market stood the residence occupied by his son, Sir John Johnson, Indian commissioner, and it was here that peace conferences were held with the great Indian chiefs Brant and Tecumseh. At the corner of St. Peter and St. Paul streets, stood the residence of Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle. It was in 1666 that La Salle came to Montreal to go, ten years later, on his voyage of discovery into the North west and thence down to the gulf of Mexico. 'on the lower road leading from Montreal to Lachine, can still be seen the remains of a fortified seigniorial chateau which tradition asserts was the home of La Salle in the year 1668. On St. Paul Street, just east of Place Royale, stood the birth-place Of Pierre and Jean - Baptiste Le Moyne, the men who discovered the mouth of the Mississippi river, in 1699, founded New Orleans, and who were, between them, governors of Louisiana for forty - six years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tourist: Or Pocket Manual for Travellers on the Hudson River, the Western Canal and Stage Road to Niagara Falls Down Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence to Montreal and Quebec In presenting the third edition of the Tourist to the public, the publishers offer their acknowledgments for the very liberal patronage received by the former ones, and hope the emendations and numerous additions will meet with general approbation. It is believed that all the information required by tourists through this State and Canada will be found in the pages of this work, divested of unnecessary details, and clearly arranged and classified. Some of the items, especially in relation to steamboat navigation and the canal and stage routes, are probably more full and accurate than have been contained in any of the itineraries already published; while in the enumeration of interesting points on the Hudson and elsewhere, brevity has been observed, from a desire, as much as possible, to compress the work, so as to render it emphatically the pocket-companion of the traveller, and its price proportionably moderate.
