Its rapidity of action is remark able, and to this rapidity is added certainty. With regard to the local effects of the injection, Dr. Raymond says that in over 300 injections no accident has occurred; very slight local swelling has sometimes been observed, but this has always rapidly disappeared without inflammation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Abstract of Medical Science, Vol. 5: A Digest of the Progress of Medicine and the Collateral Sciences An objection is now and again raised to the salicylate treatment 011 the ground that relapses are especially liable to occur, but so far as we are able to form an Opinion, this objection applies equally, or very nearly equally, to other methods of treatment, and a reference to thirty-two cases lately under observation shows that a relapse took place in ten cases out of eighteen in which the salicylates were used; that recurrence of the symptoms sat in in four out of eight cases under alka lies, and in two out of six cases in which the treatment consisted of a combination of the alkaline and salicylate treatments. One case under alkalies suffered as many as four relapses, while in no case under the other treatments did the pain recur more than twice. Looking to the material at our disposal for a judgment, we incline to the belief that many of the relapses under the salicylate treatment are due to the fact that the medicine has been discontinued too early in the course of the disease. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Abstract of Medical Science, Vol. 1: A Digest of the Progress of Medicine and the Collateral Sciences; Being a Supplement to the Medical News and Library; July to December, 1874 In hyperplastic granular synovitis (white swelling) of the knee, the injections are made at the most central part of the joint, so that the needle touches its surfaces. The result is abatement of the pain, falling of the evening tempera ture, which had been persistently high, and distinct reduction of the swelling. The injections must be repeated at intervals of two or three days, according to the chronicity of the disease. In subacute glandular swellings having a tendency to suppuration, and in inguinal and femoral buboes, the injection leads to abatement of the pain, redness and oedema; while the glands become reduced in bulk. It is some times necessary to repeat the injections several times before the cure is complete. In acute phlegmon of the subcutaneous and subfascial connective tissue, the injection is made at the periphery, as it may be calculated that the lymphatics will carry the remedy towards the centre when the phlegmon is extensive, two injections are made at different points. The result is to produce contraction of the tissue in a few hours, with cessation of the pain. Recovery takes place without suppuration, even if this, though imminent, have not already appeared. In traumatic erysipelas, Dr. H'uter makes an injection at different points along the edge, so as, for instance, to prevent the erysipelas from spreading from the forehead to the hairy scalp. He has, however, not yet ventured to treat the. Entire circumference of the erysipelas with numerous injections, so as to cut it short. Dr. Wilde of Plan has also recorded some successful cases of treatment of subcutaneous erysipelas by the injection of sulphocarbolate of soda. The new position Of equilibrium will then depend on the action and counteraction of Opposed muscles. It has generally been supposed that the change of position of the limb in such experiments is in the direction of the Opposing muscles, which exceed the others in mass. If this were the case, then stimuli Of different strength ap plied to the nerve-stem should be followed by motion of the limb in the same direction; the amplitude only of the motion varying with the strength of the stimulus.
