Book Synopsis Monterey Peninsula's Sporting Heritage by : John W. Frost
Download or read book Monterey Peninsula's Sporting Heritage written by John W. Frost and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the first half of the 20th century, the Monterey Peninsula produced an exceptional number of outstanding athletes, a few of whom earned widespread recognition. They were the offspring of Sicilian fishermen, of contract laborers from Spain, and of Japanese abalone divers--and some were from families that had been here for generations and produced dynasties of sports figures. Behind it all lay two expanding and often conflicting peninsula industries: sardine fishing in Monterey and the recreational empire of Del Monte Properties.
Book Synopsis Monterey Peninsula by : Kim Coventry
Download or read book Monterey Peninsula written by Kim Coventry and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the building of Hotel Del Monte in 1880 to the completion of the Pacific Coast Highway in 1937, connecting the peninsula to the redwood forests of Big Sur and San Simeon beyond, the history of the Monterey Peninsula is the story of the development of a collection of coastal communities-each with its own unique character. Captured here in over 200 vintage images is the heritage of these seaside communities and their role in the peninsula's history. The Monterey Peninsula is home to some of the most famous (and most photographed) shoreline in the world. Pictured in this book is the peninsula's golden era, explored through images that document the growth of Carmel, Pacific Grove, Monterey, Pebble Beach, Point Lobos, and Big Sur. Here you will find rare photographs of Cannery Row, the mission at Carmel, the bathhouse at Lover's Point, the bridges of the Pacific Coast Highway, the cottages of Carmel, the adobes of Monterey, and the cypress trees of Pebble Beach. Included in these pages are images from the author's collection as well as from the Monterey Public Library and Carmel's Harrison Memorial Library. Many of these have never been published.

Download or read book The Politics of Public Memory written by Martha K. Norkunas and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1993-07-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines American public culture and the means by which communities in the U.S. reconstruct the past and reinterpret the present in the development of tourism. Norkunas shows how public culture is not confined to just museums or monuments, but can be constructed on many different levels and in different settings, such as community ethnicity, natural setting (environment), literary landscape, and history. In her case study of Monterey, the author explores the particular ideologies that prompt the community to represent itself in tourism, and that also act to legitimate the current social structure.

Book Synopsis The Japanese on the Monterey Peninsula by : Tim Thomas
Download or read book The Japanese on the Monterey Peninsula written by Tim Thomas and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From fishermen to farmers to business leaders, the Japanese on the Monterey Peninsula have played a vitally important role in making Monterey what it is today. After the United States imposed the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, the number of Japanese immigrants to the West Coast increased in large numbers. In 1895, one of those immigrants, Otosaburo Noda, noticed the incredible variety of fish and red abalone in the bay. He developed the first Japanese colony on what is now Cannery Row. At the end of salmon season in August 1909, the Monterey Daily Cypress reported that there were 185 salmon boats fishing the bay, of which 145 were Japanese-owned. By 1920, there were nine Japanese abalone companies diving for this tasty mollusk, supplying restaurants and markets throughout California and across the country. Prior to World War II, 80 percent of the businesses on the Monterey Wharf were Japanese-owned.
Book Synopsis African Americans of Monterey County by : Jan Batiste Adkins
Download or read book African Americans of Monterey County written by Jan Batiste Adkins and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People of African heritage have traveled to Monterey since the 1770s, when African Spaniard Alexo Nino, a ship's caulker, traveled with Fr. Junipero Serra to Monterey via the San Antonio. For centuries since Nino, black men and women migrated to the Monterey Bay area in search of a new life. In the 20th century, some African Americans established businesses, bought homes, and encouraged family members and friends to settle in Monterey County. Others pursued military careers. Out of these communities came churches, schools, service organizations, and social groups. For the next century, the history of Monterey County's African American communities have mirrored the nation's slow progress toward integration with triumphs and setbacks that have been captured in images of employment opportunities, churches, business successes, and political struggles.
