Book excerpt: The unique behavior of the "liquid state", together with the richness of phenomena that are observed, render liquids particularly interesting for the scientific community. Note that the most important reactions in chemical and biological systems take place in solutions and liquid-like environments. Additionally, liquids are utilized for numerous industrial applications. It is for these reasons that the understanding of their properties at the molecular level is of foremost interest in many fields of science and engineering. What can be said with certainty is that both the experimental and theoretical studies of the liquid state have a long and rich history, so that one might suppose this to be essentially a solved problem. It should be emphasized, however, that although, for more than a century, the overall scientific effort has led to a considerable progress, our understanding of the properties of the liquid systems is still incomplete and there is still more to be explored. Basic reason for this is the "many body" character of the particle interactions in liquids and the lack of long-range order, which introduce in liquid state theory and existing simulation techniques a number of conceptual and technical problems that require specific approaches. Also, many of the elementary processes that take place in liquids, including molecular translational, rotational and vibrational motions (Trans. -Rot. -Vib. coupling), structural relaxation, energy dissipation and especially chemical changes in reactive systems occur at different and/or extremely short timescales.

Ideally simulations of liquid crystals require application of off-lattice models. However, the nematic-isotropic phase transition being the main focus of investigations in this work can be studied with lattice models which are computationally simple to tackle. Conventional Monte Carlo techniques like Metropolis sampling method fail to overcome problems associated with first-order phase transitions efficiently and hence the need for non-Boltzmann techniques. These techniques like Wang-Landau algorithm are known to be efficient in overcoming the energy barriers near phase transitions. However, such methods were applied earlier to study models with discrete energies like Ising model and require system-dependent modifications to study continuous models. In this monograph, we describe the development and application of such novel methods to investigate complex liquid crystalline systems like strongly confined liquid crystals and liquid crystal elastomers for reasonable system sizes and also mention the draw backs in the case of larger systems."--Page 4 of cover.

It is widely believed that the underlying state of the 5/2 effect is in the universality class of the Moore-Reed Pfaffian state or its variants. Fractional quantum Hall states show extraordinary properties that set them apart from ordinary phases of matter. They are classified as topological phases of matter. Among these a special class can store sufficient quantum information to be a platform for quantum computing. The MR states belong to this class attracting considerable interest in the 5/2 effect. All numerical studies, depending on the experimental conditions, point to either the Pfaffian or to the anti-Pfaffian. The latter is the particle-hole conjugate of the MR state but describes a distinct topological phase of matter. The particle-hole Pfaffian is another variant with scant support from numerical studies. In fact, it is in doubt weather it describes an actual topological phase. One important property of these phases of matter is the presence of an energy gap between the ground state and the first excited state. This thesis takes the first step to this goal and looks for the ground state numerically, using the Monte Carlo metropolis algorithm. The presence of a gap would change the behavior of the guiding center liquid structure factor S(Q), where Q is the magnitude of the two-dimensional linear momentum. In doing these calculations we are tacitly using another important property that is shared by all topological phases, the ground state encodes all the physical properties of the system.

The basic concepts of Monte Carlo are both simple and straightforward and rooted in statistics and probability theory, their defining characteristic being that the methodology relies on random or pseudo-random sequences of numbers. It is a technique of numerical analysis based on the approximate solution of a problem using repeated sampling experiments and observing the proportion of times a given property is satisfied. The term Monte Carlo was first used to describe calculational methods based on chance in the 1940s, but the methods themselves preceded the term by as much as a century. Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) first appeared in 1982 and similarly was preceded by development of the related calculational methodology. The success of QMC methods over the past few decades has been remarkable, and this book will clearly demonstrate that success in its discussion of applications. For isolated molecules, the basic material of chemistry, QMC methods have produced exact solutions of the Schroedinger equation for very small systems and the most accurate solutions available for very large systems.
