Book Synopsis Adaptive Strategies and Population Ecology of Northern Grouse: Volume 1: Population Studies by : Arthur T. Bergerud
Download or read book Adaptive Strategies and Population Ecology of Northern Grouse: Volume 1: Population Studies written by Arthur T. Bergerud and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive Strategies and Population Ecology of Northern Grouse was first published in 1988. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. This book is at once a major reference to the species of grouse that inhabit North America and the Holarctic and a synthesis of all the available data on their ecology, sociobiology, population dynamics, and management. The book undertakes to answer two long-standing questions in population ecology: what actually regulates the numbers within a population, and what are the breeding and survival strategies evolved in this northern environment? For Volume I, editors Arthur T. Bergerud and Michael W. Gratson have drawn together their own work and that of colleagues in North America, Iceland, and Norway—in all, eleven research studies, averaging six years' duration, on eight species of grouse. These studies deal with the blue and ruffed grouse of the forest habitat; the sharp-tailed grouse, prairie chicken, and sage grouse of the prairie or steppe; and the white-tailed, rick, and willow ptarmigan found in alpine and arctic tundras. The authors describe the rich repertoire of behavior patterns developed by the hen and the cock to achieve their two primary objectives—first, to stay alive, and then to breed. Volume II, primarily the work of Bergerud, synthesizes the evidence in Volume I and in the grouse research literature from a theoretical perspective. Several potentially controversial sociobiological hypotheses are advanced to account for flocking behavior, migration, dispersal, roosting and feeding behavior, mate choice and mating systems. The demographic analysis provides new insights into cycles of abundance, the limitation of numbers, and the demographic factors that determine densities. The contributors, besides Bergerud and Gratson: R.C. Davies, A. Gardarson, J.E. Hartzler, R.A. Huempfner, D.A. Jenni, D.H. Mossop, S. Myrberget, R.E. Page, R.K. Schmidt, W.D. Svedarsky, and J.R. Tester.

Book Synopsis The Strategy of Defeat at the Little Big Horn by : Frederic C. Wagner III
Download or read book The Strategy of Defeat at the Little Big Horn written by Frederic C. Wagner III and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The battle that unfolded at the Little Big Horn River on June 25, 1876, marked a watershed in the history of the Plains Indians. While a stunning victory for the Sioux and Cheyenne peoples, it initiated a new and vigorous effort by the U.S. government to rid the west of marauding tribes and to realize the ideal of "Manifest Destiny." While thousands of books and articles have covered different aspects of the battle, few if any have analyzed the tactics and chronology to arrive at a satisfactory explanation of what befell George Armstrong Custer and the 209 men who died alongside him. This volume seeks to explain the circumstances culminating in the near-destruction of the 7th Cavalry Regiment by a close examination of timing, setting every event to a specific moment based on accounts of the battle's participants.

Book Synopsis Montana Territory and the Civil War by : Ken Robison
Download or read book Montana Territory and the Civil War written by Ken Robison and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-09 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling portrait of how the passions of the Civil War played out among gold miners in the remote mountains of the West. In 1862, gold discoveries brought thousands of miners to camps along Grasshopper Creek—and by 1864, the Federal government had carved the Montana Territory out of the existing Idaho and Dakota Territories. Gold from Montana Territory fueled the Union war effort, yet loyalties were mixed among the miners. In this compelling collection of stories, historian Ken Robison illustrates how Southern sympathizers and Union loyalists, deserters and veterans, freed slaves and former slaveholders living side by side made a volatile and vibrant mix that molded Montana. Discover how fiery personalities like Union Colonel Sidney Edgerton and General Thomas Francis Meagher fought to keep order in the newly formed frontier, while brave Confederate and Union veterans and their hardy families created an enduring legacy that helped shape modern Montana.

Book excerpt: This book presents a bird’s eye view of the transition of a segment of the Louisiana Purchase into the states of Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming. It offers historical data meshed with Western poetry, with each one of the book’s twentythree poems contributing a relevant insight. Topics covered include, among others, the Civil War in Montana, the “Big Die-Up” of 1886-1887, the myth and reality of the American West, and the end of the homesteading era. According to the author, Dakota is more than a collection of Western verse- it is a raft with twenty-three supporting logs that has skimmed o’er the river of Western history.
