Book excerpt: Oman is not merely a desert. While it has the classic sand seas - Wahiba Sands - home to the nomadic Bedouin and their camels, this sultanate also boasts lush monsoon-soaked valleys near Salalah, mountain villages surrounded by green terraced fields of fruit trees and rose bushes, and the reef-fringed Daymaniyat Islands. With such a varied wilderness there is huge scope for adventure.Tourism has developed over the last few years and there is an increased emphasis on high-end visitors, with new luxury spas in hotels like The Chedi, The Wave, and the Four Seasons in Muscat, and the new Marriott in Salalah. Large international cruise ships now call for a night or two at Muttrah/Muscat harbour and at Salalah in the south. Eco-awareness is on the rise, with many bigger hotels using waste water for garden irrigation and eco-luxe tents are growing in popularity for desert and mountain adventure tours. The first boutique hotels are opening for small-scale tourism to the uninhabited historic villages, particularly in the mountains, where the high altitude gives cooler climates and greener landscapes with village terracing for agriculture.Oman is increasingly perceived as a high-end cultural destination. The new Opera House has opened, directly supported by the Sultan, with top-notch international performers like Placido Domingo. New sections in this edition include advice on property buying, since Omani law changed to allow expatriates to buy, explaining the rules and regulations. There is also a detailed overview of language schools teaching Arabic, not found in other guides. With advice on cultural etiquette, basic Arabic phrases and political history - as well as full practical information on where to stay and eat, and what to see and do - this fully updated edition remains the essential guide for travellers looking to discover the real Oman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those who go down to sea in ships life has always been exciting but ever dangerous. Brutally treated, under paid and subjected to greed of the ship owners and misguided government policies that conspired to keep the seaman in a condition of poverty and near slavery. Change only came about with the advent of the of the Maritime Unions and World War II. But no sooner had the war ended conditions on American Merchant vessels began to revert the old ways. The ship owners, with Government acquiescence, began to register their fleets under foreign flags in an attempt to break the power of the maritime unions. This activity give rise to the continual, and bloody, labor disputes of the 60’s and 70’s. Those prolonged lockouts and strikes were finally responsible for the virtual demise of the Merchant Marine. So ended the dream for we who love the sea and had made it our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 17th, 1982 I received an urgent telegram from my brother, who was a teacher trainer for Canadian University Services Overseas (CUSO) in northern Nigeria. "I don’t know what the chances are of us meeting in Kenya, but it sure would be fun!” Little did I know how these words would impact my life. This was pre-Internet and telegrams were one of the few ways to communicate with people half way around the world. On a whim, I flew halfway around the world to meet up with my brother and girlfriend for an Easter holiday safari in Kenya. My brother’s words set me off on my great African adventure, which later culminated in four overland trips and eventually residing in Nairobi. Like any evolving continent, there are always changes taking place, much like there are today. Africa in the 1980s was quite different: Uganda was recovering from the tyranny of Idi Amin and a no-go; travelling was forbidden and non-existent in Marxist Ethiopia, Tanzania had closed its border with Kenya, and Sudan was ruled by western-friendly President Nimieri. This book is about overland travel at its best and worst, but by any means possible: beaten-up overland trucks, buses, on an overcrowded Nile barge, by foot, by train, or by crowded, shared taxis. Travelling is not about your final destination, but about the people and different cultures you meet along the way. No one ever said that overland travel in Africa is easy, but if you want to see Africa, it might just be one of the ways. In the 1980s, it was the only way.
