Book excerpt: This book covers the development of innovative computational methodologies for the simulation of steel material fracture under both monotonic and ultra-low-cycle fatigue. The main aspects are summarised as follows: i) Database of small and full-scale testing data covering the X52, X60, X65, X70 and X80 piping steel grades. Monotonic and ULCF tests of pipe components were performed (buckled and dented pipes, elbows and straight pipes). ii) New constitutive models for both monotonic and ULCF loading are proposed. Besides the Barcelona model, alternative approaches are presented such as the combined Bai-Wierzbicki-Ohata-Toyoda model. iii) Developed constitutive models are calibrated and validated using experimentally derived testing data. Guidelines for damage simulation are included. The book could be seen as a comprehensive repository of experimental results and numerical modeling on advanced methods dealing with Ultra Low Cycle Fatigue of Pipelines when subjected to high strain loading conditions.

Book excerpt: In a previous report, a fatigue crack propagation model was analyzed by considering fatigue crack propagation as a sequence of fatigue crack initiation events. This permitted correlation to be made between the fatigue crack growth resistance and low cycle fatigue properties of metals. Four steels were tested for low cycle fatigue behavior at the University of Illinois. Good correlation was obtained between the theoretically predicted crack propagation rate based on the measured low cycle fatigue properties of the four metals and experimentally observed crack propagation rates that were reported in the literature. Further, good estimates of crack propagation rates can be obtained on the basis of static tensile properties of the metals alone where cyclic properties are not available. (Author).

Book excerpt: Five common carbon or low-alloy cast steels--SAE 0030, SAE 0050A, C-Mn, Mn-Mo and AISI 8630--were subjected to constant-amplitude fatigue tests at room temperature and at the common low climatic temperature of -45°C (-50°F). Tests included smooth specimen axial low and high cycle fatigue and compact type (CT) specimen crack growth behavior from 10-5 n/cycle (4 x 10-4 in./cycle) to threshold values at 10-10 m/cycle (4 x 10-9 in./cycle). Three of the five steels had nil ductility transition temperatures above the low test temperature. Despite this, all five cast steels showed equivalent or better fatigue resistance at the low temperature, except for some very short life low-cycle fatigue tests and for some very high fatigue crack growth rates where fracture was imminent. Scanning electron fractographic analysis indicated that ductile type fatigue crack growth mechanisms with or without striations occurred for all steels at both test temperatures except for a few interdispersed cleavage facets in 0050A steel at very high crack growth rates. At the low temperature, monotonic and cyclic stress-strain properties Su, Sy, and Sy' increased by an average of about 10%, fatigue limits increased from 2 to 25%, and ?Kth increased from 0 to 90%. No consistent correlations existed between fatigue and monotonic properties at either temperature. Mean stress effects at near ?Kth levels appeared to be influenced by crack closure.

Book excerpt: The present thesis aims at advancing an innovative computational methodology that simulates steel and composite material fracture under cyclic loading following a phenomenological approach, with calibration from both small scale and large scale testing. This work addresses fatigue processes ranging from high cycle to ultra-low-cycle fatigue. An assessment of the current state of the art is done for all the different fatigue types. Following, for ultra-low cycle fatigue a new constitutive law is proposed and validated with experimental results obtained on small scale samples. Industrial applications are shown for a large diameter straight pipe under monotonic loading conditions and for a bent pipe under cyclic loading. Emphasis is made on the capacity of the model to represent different failure modes depending on the loading conditions. The research regarding this part has been used in the frame of the European Project: ¿Ultra low cycle fatigue of steel under cyclic high-strain loading conditions¿ (ULCF). Regarding high cycle fatigue, a classic damage model is presented in combination with an automatic load advancing strategy that saves computational time when dealing with load histories of millions of cycles. Numerical examples are shown in order to demonstrate the capabilities of the advancing strategy and a validation of the model is done on small scale samples. A new constitutive model is presented for Low Cycle Fatigue that uses the classic plasticity and damage theories and simultaneously integrates both processes in the softening regime. The capabilities of the model are shown in numerical examples. Finally, the high cycle fatigue damage model is applied to the constituents of a composite material and the structural behaviour is obtained by means of the serial/parallel rule of mixtures. Validation of the constitutive formulation is done on pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer profiles.

Book excerpt: This paper summarizes a cooperative research program undertaken by the Naval Construction Research Establishment and the Department of Engineering of Cambridge University. It gives a tentative generalized picture of the monotonic and zero-to-tension low cycle fatigue (up to about 5000 cycles) behavior of cruciform welded ship quality plates in range 25 to 76 mm thick. The test results given were obtained over the past few years in a special rig capable of applying loads of 2 MN repeatedly. The rig was designed to accommodate short transverse specimens welded to loading ends so as to apply tension, combined tension and shear, or shear loading, the object being to develop short transverse failures (that is, failures associated with inclusions rolled into the plate). The results indicate the dependence of the short transverse properties on the method of loading, the strength of the steel, and the cleanness of the material. Although there were several forms of failure ranging from deep short transverse tears to failure in attachment welds, which occurred in some of the cleaner steels, it has been possible to rationalize the plots of stress range-logarithm of life to failure in the form of straight lines. This was particularly the case for the tension tests where there was less scatter than for the other two types of test.

Book excerpt: The low-cycle fatigue behavior of Type 16-8-2 stainless steel weld metal deposited by the automatic submerged-arc process at 593 ° was investigated, and the results are compared with existing data for Type 316 stainless steel base metal. Tests were conducted under axial strain control and at a constant axial strain rate of 4 x 10-3 s-1 for continuous cyclic loadings as well as hold times at peak tensile strain. Uniform-gage specimens were machined longitudinally from the surface and root areas of a 25.4-mm-thick welded plate and tested in the as-welded condition. Results indicate that the low-cycle fatigue resistance of this weld metal is somewhat better than that of the base metal for continuous-cycling conditions and significantly better for tension hold-time tests. This is attributed to the fine duplex delta ferrite-austenite microstructure in the weld metal. The initial monotonic tensile properties and the cyclic stress-strain behavior of this material were also determined. Because the cyclic changes in mechanical properties are strain-history dependent, a unique cyclic stress-strain curve does not exist for this material.
