This will be accomplished by conducting a suite of material tests (block units, mortar, grout, and reinforcing steel), assemblage tests (axial compression prism, bed-joint shear (cross specimens), diagonal tension, and flexural tension), and component tests (out-of-plane and in-plane walls) using both full-scale and reduced scale units. This experimental study is intended to investigate the feasibility of using of 1/3-scale direct modeling techniques of concrete block masonry materials and assemblages under different loading conditions. The methodology and techniques of fabrication 1/3-scale direct models of concrete block masonry components material and masonry assemblages were evaluated. For concrete masonry components material, the strength of block unit, mortar and grout and the stress-strain and ductility characteristics of reinforcement were examined. The behavior of ungrouted and grouted 1/3-scale assemblages were investigated by conducting axial compression, bed-joint shear, diagonal tension and modulus of rupture tests. Direct correlation between the model and prototype test results was performed. Good correlation of failure modes, strength and deformation characteristics was achieved. The experimental results demonstrated that direct modeling techniques applied to the investigation of behavior characteristics of masonry materials and assemblages is effective in understanding the overall behavior of full-scale concrete block masonry.

Book excerpt: As a seismic force-resisting system (SFRS), reinforced masonry shear walls with masonry boundary elements (RMSW+BEs) were found to achieve enhanced strength, stability, and ductility levels compared to rectangular RMSWs. The seismic design of RMSW+BEs necessitates reliable experimental and analytical investigations of their reinforced masonry boundary elements (RMBEs). The axial monotonic and cyclic stress-strain curves of RMBEs are essential to predict the lateral cyclic response of RMSW+BEs. This research aims to investigate, experimentally and analytically, the axial monotonic and cyclic behaviour of RMBEs built with C-shape masonry blocks. Moreover, this research proposes monotonic and cyclic stress-strain models for unconfined and confined RMBEs subjected to axial compression loading. Furthermore, a numerical study was performed to assess the sensitivity of the nonlinear seismic response of RMSW+BEs to various wall configurations and design parameters. This research's experimental work involved investigating various parameters affecting the compressive strength of fully grouted concrete masonry prisms and the axial monotonic and cyclic behaviour of RMBEs. Forty-two masonry prisms and 69 RMBEs were tested. The studied parameters were the vertical reinforcement ratio, the confinement ratio, the cross-section geometry (i.e., square vs. rectangular RMBEs), the masonry bonding pattern, pre-wetting of dry RMBEs, various grout types, and the grout compressive strength. The results showed that RMBEs built with rectangular sections exhibited enhanced strain ductility and post-peak behaviour than square RMBEs. Besides, using low grout compressive strength significantly reduced the strain ductility and yielded sharp strength degradation of the RMBEs. The RMBEs' experimental results revealed that the monotonic stress-strain curves form envelope curves to their cyclically tested counterparts. The proposed monotonic and cyclic stress-strain models showed good-to-excellent agreement with the experimental results, predicting the envelope and cyclic stress-strain curves' major characteristics. The numerical study's results showed that the seismic design of RMSW+BEs can be optimized through careful choice of their design parameters. Enhancing the RMSW+BEs lateral yield and ultimate capacities and the lateral effective stiffness can be achieved by increasing the vertical reinforcement ratio of the RMBEs and the masonry compressive strength. Contrarily, reducing the masonry strain at peak stress and/or the masonry modulus of elasticity greatly hinders the walls' displacement ductility.

Book excerpt: Reinforced masonry (RM) shear walls are the key structural elements widely used to resist lateral loads in masonry buildings due to their capability to provide lateral strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation. The flexural behaviour of RM shear walls is well defined and follows the simple flexural theory of reinforced concrete structures based on plane-section assumption. On the other hand, the shear behaviour of RM shear walls in the plastic hinge region is more complex due to the interaction between the nonlinear responses of their constituent materials, namely: concrete masonry blocks, mortar, grout, and steel reinforcement. The main objective of this thesis is to evaluate the inelastic behaviour of fully grouted RM shear walls that are dominated by shear failure. The research objective was achieved by conducting experimental, numerical, and analytical studies. The experimental work involved assessing the response of nine full-scale fully grouted rectangular RM shear walls when subjected to in-plane axial compressive stress, cyclic lateral excitations, and top moment. The main variables considered were the level of axial compressive stress, shear span to depth ratio, horizontal reinforcement ratio, anchorage end detail, and the spacing of horizontal and vertical reinforcement. The effect of the studied parameters is analyzed and presented in detail according to force-based, displacement-based, and performance-based seismic design considerations. Moreover, nonlinear finite element models were developed to simulate the behaviour of RM shear walls subjected to cyclic loading, and validated using results from the nine RM tested walls. Good agreements with the experimental load-displacement hysteretic loops were achieved in all models. In addition, a parametric study was performed to consider more variations in some of the parameters examined in the experimental work, which arrived at similar conclusions of the tested walls. Using the results of the tested RM shear walls together with the parametric study, an equation for predicting the in-plane shear strength, Vn, of RM shear walls was proposed and verified with results of 64 RM wall tests from five sources in the literature. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed equation against ten widely-used equations, including the design equations given in the Canadian Standards Association CSA S304-2014, the US Masonry Standards Joint Committee MSJC-2013, and the Standards Association of New Zealand NZS 4230:2004. The analysis shows that the proposed equation provides a sufficiently conservative and more accurate prediction for Vn than any of the other evaluated equations.

Book excerpt: The behavior of wood shear walls has been the focus of researchers and engineers for many years due to their availability in the North American construction landscape. A review of the established literature showed that most of the research have focused on the shear wall behavior as a whole with no investigation specifically targeting the individual components of its deflection. Also, little to no attention has been given to the investigation of the cumulative effects especially when the out-of-plane diaphragm stiffness is considered. The current study aims at investigating the effects of construction details variation on the behavior of the shear walls and evaluating whether the current deflection equation, as per wood design standard (CSA 2014) can adequately predict the overall wall stiffness. A total of 27 full-scale single-storey walls, with different construction details and aspect ratios, were tested under either static or monotonic (as both are the same) loading. The parameters that were varied in the testing were the stud size and spacing, nail diameter and spacing, sheathing panel type and thickness and hold-down anchoring system/type. For the two-storey walls, two different loading cases were considered, namely where the load was applied at the top or bottom storey only. The results showed that the strength and stiffness correlated almost directly to the inverse of the wall aspect ratio. There was no clear trend when considering the effect of the walls' aspect ratios on ductility. Unexpectedly, walls with aspect ratios not permitted according to the wood design standard (4:1 and 6:1) followed similar strength and stiffness trends and had sufficient ductility ratios as those with smaller aspect ratios. This observation explains in part some of the discrepancies found between engineering calculations and behavior of actual building with light frame wood shear walls. Significant discrepancies were found when comparing the various deflection constituent with those estimated using the design expression. Adding more end studs and changing the size of the studs had no significant effect on the overall wall capacity and little effect on its stiffness. Reducing the stud spacing had, as expected, no effect on the wall capacity; however, the results showed that the bending stiffness was affected by the overall number of studs in the wall and not solely by the end studs. Shear walls sheathed with plywood panels exhibits slightly higher peak load and initial stiffness than those with OSB, which was mainly attributed to the greater panel thickness, and possibly density, of the plywood. Both sheathing types provided similar levels of ductility, as expected. Thicker sheathing increased the capacity and stiffness of the wall with no significant change observed in ductility ratio. The wall strength was significantly affected by the nail diameter and nail spacing, but no difference was observed when the nail edge/end distance was increased. The results also showed that discrete hold-down system behaved in a non-linear manner with a significantly greater initial stiffness than that assumed in design. The study also showed that having continuous hold-down connections has a positive effect on the capacity, stiffness and ductility of the wall when compared with discrete hold-downs. Having no hold-down adversely affects the wall capacity and stiffness, but did not affect the ductility of the wall. For the two-storey walls, the deflection estimated based on the cumulative effect assumption showed slight differences when compared with that observed in the experimental study. It was observed that the majority of the cumulative effect stems from the rigid body rotation due to deformation in the hold-down devices. A Computer shear wall model (through SAP2000) was developed using linear "frame" and "membrane" elements for the framing and sheathing members, respectively, whereas the sheathing to framing nails and hold-down were modeled using nonlinear springs. It was found that the model was capable of predicting the peak load, ultimate deflection and yield loads with reasonable accuracy, but overestimated the initial stiffness and ductility of the walls. In general, when the force-displacement curves were compared it was evident that the model was capable of predicting the wall behaviour with reasonable accuracy. When investigating the cumulative effects using the model, the results clearly showed that the assumption of cumulative effects due to rigid body rotation is valid for stacked shearwalls with no consideration for the floor diaphragm. The effect of the diaphragm on the behavior of the shear walls, in particular its out-of-plane rigidity was simulated by modeling the floors as beam. The out of plane stiffness of the shear walls was investigated for idealized (infinitely stiff or flexible) as well as "realistic". The results showed reductions in the shearwall deflection in the magnitude of approximately 80% considering the out of plane rigidity of the diaphragm. It was also concluded that considering conservative estimates of out of plane stiffness might lead to a very significant reduction in deflection and that assuming the floor diaphragm to be infinitely rigid out of plan seems reasonable. For diaphragms supported on multiple panels further reduction in the deflection was observed. More work, particularly at the experimental level, is needed to verify the finding obtained in the numerical investigation related to the effect of out of plane diaphragm stiffness.
