Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we study the isotopy problem for a certain three-dimensional contactomorphism which is supported in a neighbourhood of an embedded 2-sphere with standard characteristic foliation. The diffeomorphism which underlies it is the Dehn twist on the sphere, and therefore its square becomes smoothly isotopic to the identity. The main result of this dissertation gives conditions under which any iterate of the Dehn twist along a non-trivial sphere is not contact isotopic to the identity. This provides the first examples of exotic contactomorphisms with infinite order in the contact mapping class group, as well as the first examples of exotic contactomorphisms of 3-manifolds with b_1 = 0. The proof crucially relies on the construction of an invariant for families of contact structures in monopole Floer homology which generalises the Kronheimer--Mrowka--Ozsváth--Szabó contact invariant, together with the nice interaction between this families invariant and the U map in Floer homology.

Book excerpt: Andreas Floer died on May 15, 1991 an untimely and tragic death. His visions and far-reaching contributions have significantly influenced the developments of mathematics. His main interests centered on the fields of dynamical systems, symplectic geometry, Yang-Mills theory and low dimensional topology. Motivated by the global existence problem of periodic solutions for Hamiltonian systems and starting from ideas of Conley, Gromov and Witten, he developed his Floer homology, providing new, powerful methods which can be applied to problems inaccessible only a few years ago. This volume opens with a short biography and three hitherto unpublished papers of Andreas Floer. It then presents a collection of invited contributions, and survey articles as well as research papers on his fields of interest, bearing testimony of the high esteem and appreciation this brilliant mathematician enjoyed among his colleagues. Authors include: A. Floer, V.I. Arnold, M. Atiyah, M. Audin, D.M. Austin, S.M. Bates, P.J. Braam, M. Chaperon, R.L. Cohen, G. Dell' Antonio, S.K. Donaldson, B. D'Onofrio, I. Ekeland, Y. Book excerpt: This book presents the first steps of a theory of confoliations designed to link geometry and topology of three-dimensional contact structures with the geometry and topology of codimension-one foliations on three-dimensional manifolds. Developing almost independently, these theories at first glance belonged to two different worlds: The theory of foliations is part of topology and dynamical systems, while contact geometry is the odd-dimensional "brother" of symplectic geometry. However, both theories have developed a number of striking similarities. Confoliations--which interpolate between contact structures and codimension-one foliations--should help us to understand better links between the two theories. These links provide tools for transporting results from one field to the other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hauptvermutung is the conjecture that any two triangulations of a poly hedron are combinatorially equivalent. The conjecture was formulated at the turn of the century, and until its resolution was a central problem of topology. Initially, it was verified for low-dimensional polyhedra, and it might have been expected that furt her development of high-dimensional topology would lead to a verification in all dimensions. However, in 1961 Milnor constructed high-dimensional polyhedra with combinatorially inequivalent triangulations, disproving the Hauptvermutung in general. These polyhedra were not manifolds, leaving open the Hauptvermu tung for manifolds. The development of surgery theory led to the disproof of the high-dimensional manifold Hauptvermutung in the late 1960's. Unfortunately, the published record of the manifold Hauptvermutung has been incomplete, as was forcefully pointed out by Novikov in his lecture at the Browder 60th birthday conference held at Princeton in March 1994. This volume brings together the original 1967 papers of Casson and Sulli van, and the 1968/1972 'Princeton notes on the Hauptvermutung' of Armstrong, Rourke and Cooke, making this work physically accessible. These papers include several other results which have become part of the folklore but of which proofs have never been published. My own contribution is intended to serve as an intro duction to the Hauptvermutung, and also to give an account of some more recent developments in the area. In preparing the original papers for publication, only minimal changes of punctuation etc.

The papers are written by leading mathematicians in algebraic geometry and representation theory and present the latest developments in the field. Among other contributions, the volume includes several very impressive and elegant theorems in representation theory by R. Friedman and J. W. Morgan, convolution on homology groups of moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces by H. Nakajima, and computation of the $S1$ fixed points in Quot-schemes and mirror principle computations for Grassmanians by S.-T. Yau, et al. The book is of interest to graduate students and researchers in algebraic geometry, representation theory, topology and their applications to high energy physics.
