Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monographs on Education in the United States, Vol. 11: Scientific, Technical and Engineering Education The earliest technical schools, those of a hundred years ago or more, almost without exception grew out of the industrial demands of the locality in which they were founded. One of the best examples is the famous School of mines at Freiberg which has enjoyed a long and illustrious career and many of the earlier European schools belong to the same class. To these and the more modern schools of science and technology the United States is greatly indebted, especially on account of the generous welcome that has always been extended to American students and for the inspiration with which many of them have returned to take their part in the wonderful educational evolution which the last half century has witnessed. But in all cases European methods have been adapted rather than adopted. Political, social and material condi tions have largely in uenced educational foundations, and while the nearly one hundred schools of science and engi neering scattered over the United States have many points of resemblance, there is much individuality, particularly among the strongest and best, and it is believed that their several types represent important advances in the direction of scientific and technical education which will not be with out interest to educators in other parts of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monographs on Education in the United States, Vol. 1 Spontaneity is the keynote of education in the United States. Its varied form, its uneven progress, its lack of sym metry, its practical effectiveness, are all due to the fact that it has sprung, unbidden and unforced, from the needs and aspirations of the people. Local preference and individual initiative have been ruling forces. What men have wished for that they have done. They have not waited for state assistance or for state control. As a result, there is, in the European sense, no American system of education. There is no national educational administrative machinery and no national legislative authority over education in the several states. The bureau of education at Washington was not established until 1867, and save in one or two minor respects, its functions are wholly advisory. It is absolutely depend ent upon the good will of the educational officials of the states, counties and municipalities and upon that of the administrative Officers of privately-conducted institutions, for the admirable and authoritative statistics which it Col lects and publishes year by year. That these statistics are so complete and so accurate is evidence that the moral influence and authority of the bureau of education are very great, and that it commands a co-operation as cordial as it is universal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monographs on Education in the United States, Vol. 13: Commercial Education Its present standards both for admission and graduation are too low, its course of study too narrow and shallow, and its time requirement too short. It is useless to expect to attract and hold high-grade students with low-grade standards, or thoroughly to train young people for the duties of busi ness life with the present course of study, and in the time now given to this work. The preparation for business life ought to be as thorough as for professional life, and I believe that the time is not far distant when it will be. It should be said, and in the same sense, of the gradu ates Of our commercial schools as it is said of the graduates of our best technical schools, viz., 'that the business world not only finds that it can afford to employ them, but that it cannot afford not to employ them.' There is a good demand for thoroughly trained men - not merely clerks in all departments Of business, and the commercial school ought to be able to supply that demand. (ibid.) Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monographs on Education in the United States: Educational Organization and Administration But while they began to be interested in education it was because they saw that schools would help the individual and so promote virtue and extend religion. It did not occur to them at the first that the safety of the new form of govern ment was associated with the diffusion of learning among all the people. This is not strange, for the suffrage was not universal at the beginning of independent government in America. Therefore, while the desirability of education was recognized, it was understood to be the function of parents to provide it for their children, or of guardians and masters to extend it to their wards and apprentices. When schools were first established they were partnership affairs between people who had children in their care, and for their con venience. They apportioned the expense among themselves such as had no children were without much concern about the matter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New York Teachers' Monographs, Vol. 2: June, 1900 The method laid down by Mr. Prince is, as has been stated, the most usual method. It embraces three steps; the writing on a theme by the pupils; the marking, by the teacher, of errors in what the pupils have written the re-writing, by the pupils, of their compositions in such a way as to correct the errors marked by the teacher. In practice, I have found this method open to the most serious objections. The reading of compositions in order to correct errors lays an intolerable burden on the already overburdened grade teacher. In this monotonous grind she consumes the energy that should be devoted to the preparation and execution of class work. The drudgery for the teacher being so irksome and blighting, she is naturally led to diminish the number of compositions written so that the pupil does not receive sufficient practice in writing; one composition a week is probably the maximum under this plan, while one every fortnight is more nearly the rule. At this rate, only those endowed with unusual powers of language ever learn to write with facility. But when the work of the teacher degenerates into mere drudgery, it is apt to become the same for the pupils. So it certainly is in this case. As the children have no facility in com position, the first writing is drudgery; as they are required to copy, after a lapse of some time, what has been corrected by the teacher, the copying process becomes more irksome even than the first writ ing; it is always perfunctory and generally abhorred. Since this has been the method commonly pursued in the higher grammar grades and in high schools, it is little wonder that the colleges find their students at entrance miserably deficient in the writing of English. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monographs on Education in the United States, And, 16 Summer Schools and University Extension The highest exponent of the institution is its present chancellor, Dr. John H. Vincent, one of the two original founders. He best represents the broad religious, and patriotic spirit Of Chautauqua. He infused into it the idea that all sound learning is sacred, and that the secular life may be pervaded by a religious spirit. Accordingly he has added to biblical study and higher training for Sunday school teachers the greatest variety of allied subjects; for example, history, literature, languages (ancient and mod ern), art, science, music, elocution, physical culture in short, education in general.
