Book Synopsis Moss Flora of Central America by : Bruce Allen
Download or read book Moss Flora of Central America written by Bruce Allen and published by Missouri Botanical Garden Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part 3 gives keys, descriptions, and discussions for 239 moss species. In addition, for each species precise type information is provided; distribution within Central America is documented by the examination of specimens; world distribution is indicated; habitat notes based on personal field experience or taken from collection labels are provided; and a list of previously published illustrations is given. This volume contains numerous genera that treat all tropical American species of those genera, as well as major treatments on Lepidopilum (18 species), Thamniopsis (13 species), Pireella (11 species), and Porotrichum (11 species); it will likely prove useful for many genera throughout the Neotropics.

Book Synopsis Illustrated Moss Flora of Antarctica by : Ryszard Ochyra
Download or read book Illustrated Moss Flora of Antarctica written by Ryszard Ochyra and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-13 with total page 711 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mosses are a major component of the vegetation in ice-free coastal regions of Antarctica. They play an important role in the colonisation of ice-free terrain, accumulation of organic matter, release of organic exudates, and also provide a food and habitat resource for invertebrates. They serve as model organisms for physiological experiments designed to elucidate problems of plant cold tolerance and survival mechanisms and for monitoring biological responses to climate change. This Flora provides the first comprehensive description, with keys, of all known species and varieties of moss in the Antarctic biome. It has involved microscopic examination of around 10,000 specimens from Antarctica and, for comparison, from other continents. All species are illustrated by detailed line drawings, alongside information about their reproductive status, ecology, and distribution. This is an invaluable resource for bryologists worldwide, as well as to Antarctic botanists and other terrestrial biologists.
Book Synopsis Chemical Constituents of Bryophytes by : Yoshinori Asakawa
Download or read book Chemical Constituents of Bryophytes written by Yoshinori Asakawa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some 50 years, Professor Asakawa and his group have focused their research on the chemical constituents of bryophytes and have found that these plants contain large numbers of secondary metabolites, such as terpenoids, acetogenins, and aromatic compounds representative of many new skeletons, which exhibit interesting biological activities. Individual terpenoids, when found as constituents of both a bryophyte and a higher plant, tend to occur in different enantiomeric forms. Professor Asakawa has covered the literature on bryophytes in two earlier volumes of Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products, namely, Volumes 42 (1982) and 65 (1995). Since the publication of the latter volume, a great deal of new information has appeared on bryophytes. One example is that known sex pheromones of algae have been discovered in two liverworts, indicating that some members of the latter taxonomic group might originate from brown algae. From information provided in this volume, it is suggested that two orders of the Marchantiophyta should be combined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully updated and expanded new edition offers a complete overview of hornworts, liverworts, and mosses--diverse groups of land plants that occupy many habitats throughout the world. Revised classifications incorporate contributions from the most recent phylogenetic studies. Six new chapters have also been added, focusing on Physcomitrella to plant genomic research, population ecology of bryophytes, mechanisms of drought tolerance, a phylogenomic perspective on land plant evolution, and problems and progress of bryophyte speciation and conservation. Rich in primary source references and written by leaders in the field, this comprehensive text is suitable for advanced students and researchers.
