Book excerpt: "A series of gender monitoring studies were launched during FP6 (five lots each covering several activity areas, a separate study for DG INFSO and a coordination contract) designed to monitor progress towards gender equality and gender relevance awareness in FP6. The studies examine both the participation of women in FP6 activities and the gender dimension of the research content, the aim being to assess the success of current gender mainstreaming strategies and to provide recommendations for future activities in this field. This report presents a synthesis of the key findings and recommendation of the six studies."--Editor.

Book excerpt: A series of gender monitoring studies were launched during FP6 (five lots each covering several activity areas, a separate study for DG INFSO and a coordination contract) designed to monitor progress towards gender equality and gender relevance awareness in FP6. The studies examine both the participation of women in FP6 activities and the gender dimension of the research content, the aim being to assess the success of current gender mainstreaming strategies and to provide recommendations for future activities in this field. This report presents the results of the study for activities supporting the development of research infrastructures in Europe which cover a wide spread of scientific areas. The funding of research activities is limited in this activity area that is mostly aimed at promoting networking and developing the transnational access of researchers to research infrastructures. The study shows that gender mainstreaming in the funded projects is to be further promoted whatever the scientific field. It also illustrates the still limited representation of women in high level management as well as the need to question the relevance of gender dimension at the early stage of the design of research infrastructures.

This report presents the results of the study for two-cross-cutting activities aimed at integrating and strengthening the European Research Are: Research to explore new and emerging scientific and technological problems and opportunities (NEST), support for the coherent development of policies and for research and innovation. The female participation in funded projects in those activities is ranging from 19% to 27%. The analysis shows a high relevance of gender dimension in a large number of projects. However there is still need for improvements at the implementation stage of the planet gender mainstreaming activities. The study also found good examples of NEST projects in which gender dimension has been questioned and integrated in the development of the research activities.

This report presents the results of the study for activities supporting the co-ordination of national research activities in Europe. The funding in this activity area is aimed at fostering and supporting initiatives undertaken by several countries in areas of strategic common interest and developing synergies between existing research programmes by co-ordinating their implementation and defining joint research programme. The study shows a relatively high female participation in the ERA-NET projects that are managed by governmental bodies and public funding agencies, and a positive evolution in terms of measures identified to enhance the participation of women. The study found also good examples of projects in which gender mainstreaming is in integrated part of the objectives and activities.

This executive summary concerns the results of the Gender Monitoring Study for the thematic area Citizens and Governance in a knowledge-based society. The study team acknowledge the significant improvement made in terms of progress towards gender equality in comparison to FP5 but strongly emphasise the need to maintain and re-inforce these efforts going forward. The team underline the need to ensure availability of gender experts at conception, preparation and implementation of the Framework Programme and recommend a continuation of the Gender Action Plans." -- Editor.

The study aimed at providing an assessment of the mainstreaming of gender in the conception and management of the programme and projects, the participation of women in the programme and projects and the extent to which the EU-funded research in the abovementioned fields meets the needs of both women and men and contributes to an enhanced understanding of gender issues.

Book excerpt: "This report presents the results for Sustainable Energy Systems, an area closely related to physics and engineering, which are not only the most male-dominated scientific fields, but also the fields in which the relevance of gender in research content is least evident. However, EU-funded research on sustainable energy reflects a rising concern about the relationship between energy and environment and has led to a greater focus on the role of energy consumers, social and economic factors in technology adoption, and impacts on people. The emphasis on these aspects opens up the opportunity to integrate gender issues in research content. The study has found good examples of research projects in which the integration of the gender dimension has clearly enhanced scientific excellence." -- Editor.

This report presents the results of the study for specific SME activities. The horizontal research activities, co-operative research and collective research, are specific schemes for SMEs which address primarily the large community of SMEs with capacity to innovate but with limited research capacities. The study shows that female participation in the funded projects is quite low compared to participation in other activities. In addition, measures identified to enhance the participation of women tend to decrease in the course of the Framework Programme. The analysis also illustrates the need to increase the awareness and knowledge on benefits associated with the integration of gender dimension in the wide spread of fields covered by the projects.
