Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writings of Jacqueline Shohet Kahanoff (1917–1979) offer a refreshing reassessment of Arab-Jewish relations in the Middle East. A member of the bourgeois Jewish community in Cairo, Kahanoff grew up in a time of coexistence. She spent the years of World War II in New York City, where she launched her writing career with publications in prominent American journals. Kahanoff later settled in Israel, where she became a noted cultural and literary critic. Mongrels or Marvels offers Kahanoff's most influential and engaging writings, selected from essays and works of fiction that anticipate contemporary concerns about cultural integration in immigrant societies. Confronted with the breakdown of cosmopolitan Egyptian society, and the stereotypes she encountered as a Jew from the Arab world, she developed a social model, Levantinism, that embraces the idea of a pluralist, multicultural society and counters the prevailing attitudes and identity politics in the Middle East with the possibility of mutual respect and acceptance.

Book excerpt: An unprecedented account of the long-term cultural and political influences that Mexican-Americans will have on the collective character of our nation. In considering the largest immigrant group in American history, Gregory Rodriguez examines the complexities of its heritage and of the racial and cultural synthesis--mestizaje--that has defined the Mexican people since the Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century. He persuasively argues that the rapidly expanding Mexican American integration into the mainstream is changing not only how Americans think about race but also how we envision our nation. Brilliantly reasoned, highly thought provoking, and as historically sound as it is anecdotally rich, Mongrels, Bastards, Orphans, and Vagabonds is a major contribution to the discussion of the cultural and political future of the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mongrel Nation surveys the history of the United Kingdom’s African, Asian, and Caribbean populations from 1948 to the present, working at the juncture of cultural studies, literary criticism, and postcolonial theory. Ashley Dawson argues that during the past fifty years Asian and black intellectuals from Sam Selvon to Zadie Smith have continually challenged the United Kingdom’s exclusionary definitions of citizenship, using innovative forms of cultural expression to reconfigure definitions of belonging in the postcolonial age. By examining popular culture and exploring topics such as the nexus of race and gender, the growth of transnational politics, and the clash between first- and second-generation immigrants, Dawson broadens and enlivens the field of postcolonial studies. Mongrel Nation gives readers a broad landscape from which to view the shifting currents of politics, literature, and culture in postcolonial Britain. At a time when the contradictions of expansionist braggadocio again dominate the world stage, Mongrel Nation usefully illuminates the legacy of imperialism and suggests that creative voices of resistance can never be silenced.Dawson “Elegant, eloquent, and full of imaginative insight, Mongrel Nation is a refreshing, engaged, and informative addition to post-colonial and diasporic literary scholarship.” —Hazel V. Carby, Yale University “Eloquent and strong, insightful and historically precise, lively and engaging, Mongrel Nation is an expansive history of twentieth-century internationalist encounters that provides a broader landscape from which to understand currents, shifts, and historical junctures that shaped the international postcolonial imagination.” —May Joseph, Pratt Institute Ashley Dawson is Associate Professor of English at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center and the College of Staten Island. He is coeditor of the forthcoming Exceptional State: Contemporary U.S. Culture and the New Imperialism.

Book excerpt: The front door of Shuna's family home acted as a gateway to Bangladesh. Nothing haram passed through this door, this was a devout house. When Shuna walked through this door, she switched her rebellious face to her pious face, which eagerly absorbed the teaching of the Prophet, striving to be a good Muslim girl. The switching between these two faces became increasingly difficult as they grew further and further apart. 'Yes, yes, yes I'll marry you!' I said to David. Although, after the celestial shock wore off and dull reality set in, I realised there was a slight problem. I would have to tell my very traditional parents that I was going to marry a non-Muslim and confess my secret life. It's my wedding day. My parents are absent. I'm not surprised. Why would my parents want to celebrate their daughter's eternal damnation in hell fire?

Book excerpt: A collection of essays on class politics in America In popular retellings of American history, capitalism generally doesn’t feature much as part of the founding or development of the nation. Instead, it is alluded to in figurative terms as opportunity, entrepreneurial vigor, material abundance, and the seven-league boots of manifest destiny. In this collection of essays, Steve Fraser, the preeminent historian of American capitalism, sets the record straight, rewriting the arc of the American saga with class conflict center stage and mounting a serious challenge to the consoling fantasy of American exceptionalism. From the colonial era to Trump, Fraser recovers the repressed history of debtors’ prisons and disaster capitalism, of confidence men and the reserve armies of the unemployed. In language that is dynamic and compelling, he demonstrates that class is a fundamental feature of American political life and provides essential intellectual tools for a shrewd reading of American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate over the affair between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings rarely rises above the question of "Did they or didn’t they?" But lost in the argument over the existence of such a relationship are equally urgent questions about a history that is more complex, both sexually and culturally, than most of us realize. Mongrel Nation seeks to uncover this complexity, as well as the reasons it is so often obscured. Clarence Walker contends that the relationship between Jefferson and Hemings must be seen not in isolation but in the broader context of interracial affairs within the plantation complex. Viewed from this perspective, the relationship was not unusual or aberrant but was fairly typical. For many, this is a disturbing realization, because it forces us to abandon the idea of American exceptionalism and re-examine slavery in America as part of a long, global history of slaveholders frequently crossing the color line. More than many other societies--and despite our obvious mixed-race population--our nation has displayed particular reluctance to acknowledge this dynamic. In a country where, as early as 1662, interracial sex was already punishable by law, an understanding of the Hemings-Jefferson relationship has consistently met with resistance. From Jefferson’s time to our own, the general public denied--or remained oblivious to--the possibility of the affair. Historians, too, dismissed the idea, even when confronted with compelling arguments by fellow scholars. It took the DNA findings of 1998 to persuade many (although, to this day, doubters remain). The refusal to admit the likelihood of this union between master and slave stems, of course, from Jefferson’s symbolic significance as a Founding Father. The president’s apologists, both before and after the DNA findings, have constructed an iconic Jefferson that tells us more about their own beliefs--and the often alarming demands of those beliefs--than it does about the interaction between slave owners and slaves. Much more than a search for the facts about two individuals, the debate over Jefferson and Hemings is emblematic of tensions in our society between competing conceptions of race and of our nation.

Book excerpt: The Mongrel Mob of Aotearoa New Zealand is notorious for extreme violence, and they have long been regarded as the nations monsters. In layers of apparent contradictions, their icon is the British bulldog wearing a Nazi helmet, while their members are largely indigenous Maori. The Mongrel Mobs symbols arose as both a goading response to a history of colonial subjugation of Maori, and a proclamation of war against the (white) state. Mongrelism offers a communion with this impenetrable fraternity. Monumental portraits illustrate Mob members assertion of membership and pride in their identity. Artefact studies and brutal first person narratives are drawn from the Mob corpus, mirroring the landscapes that bare the brooding environments where Mob members live. Mongrelism examines how the gang brands itself to itself to uphold its hierarchy and history, and find core values usually lauded by society: perseverance, resilience, and loyalty. The publication takes the form of a gang handbook. The order and grouping of images is the result of consultation with members and hews to their geographic, familial and hierarchical relationships. An unedited Mob voice dominates the written section. Rotmans images have become a part of Mob history and their visual mythology. Ongoing consultation and engagement has been integral. Rotman is a fourth generation white New Zealander, his forebears were among the first to settle in the region that became the epicentre of the Mob genesis. The process of colonisation and the atomisation of indigenous communities can be argued to have resulted in the Mongrel Mob. IMongrelism, as in the history of the nation, the narratives intertwine.

Fiction. Women's Studies. Latinx Studies. A mongrel tongue is a language, like English, made up of words imposed by, borrowed, inherited, pilfered, and misheard from many different languages. A mongrel tongue is a language of the mixed-up descendants of the colonized, the crimson-lipped feminized, the weepy survivors of a fevered nostalgia, and hybrid beasts of the deep. We turn to a mongrel tongue when the stories we've been told have calcified into media narratives, advertising, and purebred political campaigns, and we wish to write another story, whose ending is yet unknown. "With lyrical brilliance and discipline, Megin Jiménez's MONGREL TONGUE swerves through the many ways we live with and among disaster. The narratives here are boundless; everywhere there is a body searching for home, a political exile, a climate refugee, a body that's absorbed, a body that refuses to be absorbed, a body that refuses to disappear into history. I'm thrilled by the vibrancy of this debut, by the worlds it creates amid worlds that make us vanish."--Daniel Borzutzky "These are half stories from a fully experienced observer, peering out at the light that brings her the news. The new world is here still being discovered by a woman we recognize by her likeness to another woman we don't recognize. A hilarious a prophetic book that is tragic at heart."--Fanny Howe "Eschewing purity of all kinds, the prose poems and hybrid pieces in MONGREL TONGUE call themselves novel, document, story, tale, interview, history, invocation. This startling book revels in the translator's gulf, nomadically moving through the clutter of the world, offering slippages and valences galore."--Shanna Compton

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mongrel is translated from the original Third Reich book with the title Der Pudelmopsdackelpinscher - literally translatable as The Poodle-Pug-Dachshund-Fox-Terrier (which is also the title of one of the chapters) by Ernst Hiemer. The original illustrations by Willi Hofman - over thirty small black and white sketches - are also included. Nonetheless, this book consists primarily of text, not pictures. Originally published by the Strmer publishing house of Julius Streicher in Nuremberg in 1940, this now rare - and much sought after by collectors - book was aimed at children. It contains a dozen stories about dangerous or harmful animals, each followed by an unflattering comparison to Jewry. These animals include, but are not limited to, hyenas, grasshoppers, blood-suckers, poisonous snakes, tape-worms and bacillus. This book is also rare, even among Third Reich books, in its open call to totally destroy Jewry, and indeed world-wide, as a necessary final step in an inescapable struggle to the death between Jewry and all the non-Jewish folks of the world. Here is a quote from page 50: Enlightenment alone, however, cannot solve the Jewish question. A folk that knows the Jew must also have the strength to ruthlessly act against the world enemy. Just like the snake threat is only then totally removed, if the poisonous snakes are totally cleaned out, so is the Jewish question only then solved, if Jewry is destroyed. Mankind must know that in the Jewish question there is only a hard "either-or"; for: If we do not kill the Jewish poisonous snake, then it will kill us! Softcover. 64pp.

Book excerpt: In his introduction to Mongrel Rapture, the first monograph on the polarising work of Australian architectural practice Ashton Raggatt McDougall (ARM), Charles Jencks identifies ARM as one of a handful of architectural practices internationally that operate in a mold he describes as 'Radical Post Modernism'. Eschewing notions of good taste and formal purity, ARM opts instead for an 'architecture of ideas'. Drawing from diverse sources that range across everything from Le Corbusier to Robert Venturi, computer programming to biblical verse, ARM's architecture has been alternately celebrated and execrated by critics and the public alike. Despite ARM's radicalism and the attention it garners, however, the practice has also produced some of the most important public buildings in Australia, including the National Museum of Australia, Canberra (2001), Melbourne Recital Centre and MTC Theatre (2008), and the Perth Arena (2013). Mongrel Rapture combines extensive photography and plans of all of ARM's major buildings with essays from a range of highly regarded critics, including Jencks, Mark C Taylor, Leon van Schaik, Harriet Edquist and others. Part scrapbook, part critical exegesis, like the architecture it documents Mongrel Rapture is both confronting and thought-provoking: a vital publication for anyone with an interest in this practice and Australian architecture's very particular strain of 'Radical Post Modernism'.
