Book excerpt: Real life insights on what it takes to make it in a relationship with an entrepreneur Entrepreneurs are always on the go, looking for the next "startup" challenge. And while they lead very intensely rewarding lives, time is always short and relationships are often long-distant and stressed because of extended periods apart. Coping with these, and other obstacles, are critical if an entrepreneur and their partner intend on staying together—and staying happy. In Startup Life, Brad Feld—a Boulder, Colorado-based entrepreneur turned-venture capitalist—shares his own personal experiences with his wife Amy, offering a series of rich insights into successfully leading a balanced life as a human being who wants to play as hard as he works and who wants to be as fulfilled in life and in work. With this book, Feld distills his twenty years of experience in this field to addresses how the village of startup people can put aside their workaholic ways and lead rewarding lives in all respects. Includes real-life examples of entrepreneurial couples who have had successful relationships and what works for them Provides practical advice for adapting to change and overcoming the inevitable ups and downs associated with the entrepreneurial lifestyle Written by Brad Feld, a thought-leader in this field who has been an early-stage investor and successful entrepreneur for more than twenty years While there's no "secret formula" to relationship success in the world of the entrepreneur, there are ways to making navigation of this territory easier. Startup Life is a well-rounded guide that has the insights and advice you need to succeed in both your personal and business life.

Book excerpt: “What? Are you pregnant? Oh no! How will I ever get through medical school if there's a baby! Without you working I'll never make it! Oh, my Father! It's taking every penny I make already! Why didn't you prevent this! Oh! My Father! My Father!” He stood up and paced the floor. Elizabeth was not off to a good start in life, unwanted even before she was born. Fortunately, the tiny baby was placed in the loving care of her paternal grandparents, where she lived for the first three years of her life. Then, her abusive father arbitrarily decided that she belonged with her parents and unceremoniously ripped her from the only safe, secure home she had ever known. In spite of her turbulent childhood and teen years, Elizabeth managed to go to college and become a physical therapist. Faced with tragedy after tragedy, she decided to temporarily leave her old New England farmhouse and hit the road as a traveling physical therapist. You’ll laugh and cry with her as she traverses the country in her forty-foot fifth wheel with Gracie Allen, her faithful cat. As she survives a broken heart, a blow-out on a busy Florida freeway, a tornado in Kentucky, and a pain-crazed, gun-wielding patient, she grows ever more dependent upon the God who promised to never leave her nor forsake her. Journey with Elizabeth as she makes “forever friends” from coast to coast, savors the beauty that is America, and cherishes the home on a rocky Maine shore that is her anchor point throughout her travels—and realize that the same God who never left her alone will never leave you, either.

Book excerpt: From a popular pastor and radio host—Three Free Sins teaches that the only people who make any progress toward being better are those who know that God will still love them, regardless of how good they are. This book is about the misguided obsession with the management of sin that cripples too many Christians. It’s about the view that religion is all about sin…about how to hide side sin or how to stop sinning all together. In the Introduction, the author toys good-naturedly with an agitated caller on his radio program, teasing him in a segment where he offers three free sins. The offer is real. Not that Steve has the power to forgive sins, but he wants to make the point that Jesus has made the offer to cover all of our sins – not just three. Chapter one, titled “Teaching Frogs to Fly,” is even better. The gist of this chapter is that you can’t teach frogs to fly, just like you can’t teach people not to sin. Steve tells a story about a guy who has a frog, and he’s convinced he can teach the frog how to fly. The man keeps throwing the frog up in the air or up against walls – all to the poor frog’s demise. The message is that even though people can be better, they can never not sin—just like a frog can never learn to fly, no matter how much pressure is put on it. Steve continues through the book to show readers that while they can never manage sin, they can relax in knowing that they are completely forgiven—not just of three, but of all.

What might the unfinished scorecard of your life look like? The quest for answers to these hypothetical questions led author Andre Huu to the fundamental concepts behind his book, The Round of Your Life. In his memoir, Huu likens his life to a game of golf, offering a scoring method to help him evaluate his experiences, responses, and lessons learned. Throughout this journeyfrom his birth in Vietnam to the present dayhe shares his stories and the scores he has assigned himself for each hole hes played. He invites you to apply his unique scoring method to come up with a scorecard for your own life. Filled with life stories, insights, advice, and inspirational quotes, The Round of Your Life encourages you to worry less about the score of the game and focus more on getting the most enjoyment possible out of the rest of your round.
