Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper marks the launch of a new IMF series, Fintech Notes. Building on years of IMF staff work, it will explore pressing topics in the digital economy and be issued periodically. The series will carry work by IMF staff and will seek to provide insight into the intersection of technology and the global economy. The Rise of Digital Money analyses how technology companies are stepping up competition to large banks and credit card companies. Digital forms of money are increasingly in the wallets of consumers as well as in the minds of policymakers. Cash and bank deposits are battling with so-called e-money, electronically stored monetary value denominated in, and pegged to, a currency like the euro or the dollar. This paper identifies the benefits and risks and highlights regulatory issues that are likely to emerge with a broader adoption of stablecoins. The paper also highlights the risks associated with e-money: potential creation of new monopolies; threats to weaker currencies; concerns about consumer protection and financial stability; and the risk of fostering illegal activities, among others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now with every illustration in color. This landmark work is the standard reference on American currency since 1953, acknowledged as the most comprehensive and universally recognized guide on the subject, illustrating and valuating all types of United States paper money. From the first year of Federal paper money, 1861, to date, both sides of all currency, from 3 cents to $100,000 are illustrated and accompanied by text listing, describing and pricing, in up to seven conditions, every variety of paper money ever issued. The result is a complete pictorial, descriptive and numismatic history of United States currency. Also with sections on Colonial and Continental currency and the Confederate States of America, and chapters on error notes, encased postage stamps and postage envelopes. For those who think of America's currency as a constant study in green and black, the rainbow-like diversity shown by the more than 800 color illustrations is a revelation in itself. New information has been added and valuations updated, making it possible to establish the value of any note. Paper Money of the United States has been an invaluable asset to currency collectors and numismatists. It also possesses an appeal and value to lovers of Americana, of the fine art of engraving, and students of American history, finance and economics.Banks will find this book especially useful in that it makes possible the immediate identification and valuation of all obsolete but still legal tender currency. It is a book which belongs in every library, public and private.

Other countries simply wish to enhance the attractiveness, usefulness, durability, and/or security of their currencies. However, it is difficult to find consistent published information on the various aspects of this process. This paper attempts to ameliorate this problem by discussing the main issues in designing, producing, and printing a new currency, in order to help those charged with these tasks to proceed in an orderly and informed manner. Attention is also given to examining the options that may be available when this exercise must be undertaken on an emergency basis, with little or no warning.

Book excerpt: St. Louis, Missouri, is gripped by a rapid series of twelve bank robberies that leave local and federal authorities completely baffled. Dubbed the 'Boonie Hat Bandit' by the fascinated public, this infamous criminal methodically robs banks in broad daylight leaving no clues, causing everyone to wonder, Who is this man? Law enforcement is scrambling, and the robberies make national news. In September 2008, the gentleman bandit is apprehended and the stunned world finds out his shocking identity: Donald Keith Giammanco, a quiet, middle-class, single father of twin daughters. The big mystery remains: How and why would he enter a life of crime? In spite of repeated requests to tell his story, Keith Giammanco refuses to give any insight into his motivations for years...not, that is, until now. Written by the woman he falls in love with while in prison, Bank Notes delves into the thoughts and motivations of a notorious bank robber who is anything but the typical criminal, and the disastrous results of his robbery spree.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The colorful history of paper money before the Civil War Before Civil War greenbacks and a national bank network established a uniform federal currency in the United States, the proliferation of loosely regulated banks saturated the early American republic with upwards of 10,000 unique and legal bank notes. This number does not even include the plethora of counterfeit bills and the countless shinplasters of questionable legality issued by unregulated merchants, firms, and municipalities. Adding to the chaos was the idiosyncratic method for negotiating their value, an often manipulative face-to-face discussion consciously separated from any haggling over the price of the work, goods, or services for sale. In Bank Notes and Shinplasters, Joshua R. Greenberg shows how ordinary Americans accumulated and wielded the financial knowledge required to navigate interpersonal bank note transactions. Locating evidence of Americans grappling with their money in fiction, correspondence, newspapers, printed ephemera, government documents, legal cases, and even on the money itself, Greenberg argues Americans, by necessity, developed the ability to analyze the value of paper financial instruments, assess the strength of banking institutions, and even track legislative changes that might alter the rules of currency circulation. In his examination of the doodles, calculations, political screeds, and commercial stamps that ended up on bank bills, he connects the material culture of cash to financial, political, and intellectual history. The book demonstrates that the shift from state-regulated banks and private shinplaster producers to federally authorized paper money in the Civil War era led to the erasure of the skill, knowledge, and lived experience with banking that informed debates over economic policy. The end result, Greenberg writes, has been a diminished public understanding of how currency and the financial sector operate in our contemporary era, from the 2008 recession to the rise of Bitcoin.
