Download or read book John Golding written by Dawn Ades and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Golding (1929-2012) was a British artist, scholar and curator.Perhaps best known for his seminal book, Cubism: A history and an Analysis 1907-1914 (1959) he actually considered himself primarily a painter and exhibited extensively both in the UK and internationally during a career that spanned almost six decades. In retrospect, his reputation as a notable art historian somewhat, arguably, overshadowed his own practice as an artist. So, this new monograph endeavours to reveal and celebrate the other side of his oeuvre.'Golding's knowledge of Renaissance painting, especially the great Venetians [...] informed his own work as he moved out of figuration and into abstract canvases in which light was the subject. He painted vertical streaks of colour down his canvases like pleated light (as he put it) and occasionally on, say, a misty blue, he would scatter clusters of gold pigment to reflect the actual light. After the end of the 20th century, he started to structure his paintings so that they appeared to be based on photographs from thousands of feet above the Earth, with 'roads' and 'bridges' and 'canals'...' - Michael McNay, 2012 (The Guardian)Golding's work was additionally shown alongside Bridget Riley, John Hoyland, Frank Auerbach, Peter Blake and David Hockney in important group exhibitions in London such as, British Painting 74' at Hayward Gallery and, British Painting 1952-77 at the Royal Academy of Arts.

Download or read book Paul Delaroche written by Stephen Bann and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 1997 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Delaroche's works were heralded as masterpieces in the nineteenth century, and the man himself was lauded in 1853 by one Italian critic as "at the summit of all living painters." But while his paintings themselves are still familiar to many, Delaroche the artist fell into almost total obscurity during the twentieth century. Stephen Bann addresses this lacuna in art scholarship, presenting an in-depth examination of Delaroche's career. Bann situates Delaroche and his wide-ranging oeuvre in the context of early nineteenth-century visual culture. From his early historical paintings to experimental pieces influenced by photography, the book analyzes each stage of Delaroche's artistic development--as well as his major masterpieces such as The Execution of Lady Jane Grey and The Princes in the Tower. Bann also analyzes the numerous reproductions of Delaroche's works in a variety of visual mediums, including engravings by Mercuri and Henriquel-Dupont, lithographs, popular prints, and the photographs that illustrated Delaroche's first retrospective catalog. An unparalleled and lushly illustrated study, Paul Delaroche restores a neglected master to his rightful place in nineteenth-century European art.

Download or read book Paul Delaroche, 1797-1856 written by Stephen Duffy and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Delaroche was a hugely popular painter during his lifetime, first making his name with a series of historical scenes which enjoyed great acclaim at the Paris Salon. His renown extended far beyond his native country. Honored by almost every major academy, his pictures were sought by collectors in Britain, Germany, and Russia. One of his British patrons, Richard Seymour Conway (1800-1870), 4th Marquis of Hertford, acquired ten of his oil paintings and two watercolors. This group, one of the most extensive outside France, is in The Wallace Collection, which houses Lord Hertford's collections in what was once his London residence. Curator Stephen Duffy discusses in detail the twelve works, and in an introductory essay examines the life and career of the artist, on whom there will be also an exhibition at the National Gallery, London, 2010.

Book excerpt: The English Channel separates Britain from Europe, keeping invaders out of Britain and making the island and islanders different from the continent and their fellow Europeans. But the Channel also serves as a link between mainland and island, bearing settlers, missionaries, merchants, refugees and conquerors back and forth over the millennia. Explorers and adventurers have sailed its waters, and leaders from Julius Caesar to Napoleon and Hitler have battled for sovereignty over these narrow seas. Peter Unwin tells the story of the English Channel from the land-bridge that linked Britain to the continent nine thousand years ago to the Channel tunnel of the 21st century, charting the landscape and seascape of northern Europe's gateway to the oceans.

Book Synopsis Rembrandt's Roughness by : Nicola Suthor
Download or read book Rembrandt's Roughness written by Nicola Suthor and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roughness is the sensual quality most often associated with Rembrandt's idiosyncratic style. It best defines the specific structure of his painterly textures, which subtly capture and engage the imagination of the beholder. Rembrandt's Roughness examines how the artist's unconventional technique pushed the possibilities of painting into startling and unexpected realms. Drawing on the phenomenological insights of Edmund Husserl as well as firsthand accounts by Rembrandt's contemporaries, Nicola Suthor provides invaluable new perspectives on many of the painter's best-known masterpieces, including The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Deyman, The Return of the Prodigal Son, and Aristotle with a Bust of Homer. She focuses on pictorial phenomena such as the thickness of the paint material, the visibility of the colored priming, and the dramatizing element of chiaroscuro, showing how they constitute Rembrandt's most effective tools for extending the representational limits of painting. Suthor explores how Rembrandt developed a visually precise handling of his artistic medium that forced his viewers to confront the paint itself as a source of meaning, its challenging complexity expressed in the subtlest stroke of his brush. A beautifully illustrated meditation on a painter like no other, Rembrandt's Roughness reflects deeply on the intellectual challenge that Rembrandt's unrivaled artistry posed to the art theory of his time and its eminent role in the history of art today.

Book Synopsis The Lasting World by : Rudolf Arnheim
Download or read book The Lasting World written by Rudolf Arnheim and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dramatic traveling exhibit of 15 works, The Lasting World: SIMON DINNERSTEIN and The Fulbright Triptych, is the theme of this new publication. The title, The Lasting World, comes from an essay on Simon Dinnerstein by the noted art theorist and psychologist, Rudolf Arnheim. Granted a Fulbright Fellowship in 1970-1971, Dinnerstein traveled to Germany where he began working on The Fulbright Triptych, his best known work. The triptych, which measures 14 feet in width, has been the subject of much critical response, including Roberta Smith and John Russell, both senior art critics of The New York Times: "This little-known masterpiece of 1970s realism was begun by the young Simon Dinnerstein during a Fulbright Fellowship in Germany and completed in his hometown, Brooklyn, three years later. Incorporating carefully rendered art postcards, children's drawings and personal memorabilia; a formidable worktable laid out with printmaking tools and outdoor views; and the artist and his family, it synthesizes portrait, still life, interior and landscape and rummages through visual culture while sampling a dazzling range of textures and representational styles. It should be seen by anyone interested in the history of recent art and its oversights."Roberta Smith, The New York Times, August 11, 2011: "Neither scale nor perseverance has anything to do with success in art, and Mr. Dinnerstein's triptych could be just one more painstaking failure. But it succeeds as an echo chamber, as a scrupulous representation of a suburb in the sticks, as a portrait of young people who are trying to make an honorable go of life and as inventory of the kind of things that in 1975 give such people a sense of their own identity. It deserves to go to a museum."John Russell, The New York Times, February 5, 1975. The publication includes an interview with noted art historian Lynn F. Jacobs on the triptych form and essays by Alex Barker, Director of the Art Museum at the University of Missouri and Tom Healy, who served three terms as Chairman of the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, which oversees the worldwide Fulbright Program.
