Book excerpt: With wry wit and touching humor, Louie Anderson, New York Times bestselling author and Emmy Award–winning comedian currently starring in Zach Galifianakis’s Baskets, shares his journey of turning life’s challenges into joy, as well as plenty of wisdom he’s still discovering from his late mother. “I started out writing these letters to my mom, but a few friends said I should write a book. I said ‘okay’ because next to ‘we’ll see,’ ‘okay’ is as non-committal as you can get. But somehow, I stuck with it. I hope you like it. I hope that after you read it, you’ll write or call your own mom—and dad, sister, brother, cousin, nephew. Or have lunch with them. Or breakfast. It doesn’t have to be lunch. But do it now. Don’t wait like I did.” —Louie Louie Anderson has channeled his beloved mom, Ora Zella Anderson, in his stand-up routine for decades, but she died before seeing him reach his greatest heights, culminating in his breakout TV role as Christine Baskets, the mesmerizing character she inspired. Hey Mom is Louie’s way of catching her up on the triumphs, disappointments, and continuing challenges in life. Full of heartache, but also great hope, and of course—given Louie’s inimitable comedic voice—laugh-out-loud stories and his trademark observations on life’s many absurdities, Hey Mom shows a poignant side of Louie you may not know, and proves that he is one of the most nuanced and wide-ranging comics working today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You will devour these beautifully written—and very important—tales of honesty, pain, and resilience” (Elizabeth Gilbert, New York Times bestselling author of Eat Pray Love and City of Girls) from fifteen brilliant writers who explore how what we don’t talk about with our mothers affects us, for better or for worse. As an undergraduate, Michele Filgate started writing an essay about being abused by her stepfather. It took her more than a decade to realize that she was actually trying to write about how this affected her relationship with her mother. When it was finally published, the essay went viral, shared on social media by Anne Lamott, Rebecca Solnit, and many others. This gave Filgate an idea, and the resulting anthology offers a candid look at our relationships with our mothers. Leslie Jamison writes about trying to discover who her seemingly perfect mother was before ever becoming a mom. In Cathi Hanauer’s hilarious piece, she finally gets a chance to have a conversation with her mother that isn’t interrupted by her domineering (but lovable) father. André Aciman writes about what it was like to have a deaf mother. Melissa Febos uses mythology as a lens to look at her close-knit relationship with her psychotherapist mother. And Julianna Baggott talks about having a mom who tells her everything. As Filgate writes, “Our mothers are our first homes, and that’s why we’re always trying to return to them.” There’s relief in acknowledging how what we couldn’t say for so long is a way to heal our relationships with others and, perhaps most important, with ourselves. Contributions by Cathi Hanauer, Melissa Febos, Alexander Chee, Dylan Landis, Bernice L. McFadden, Julianna Baggott, Lynn Steger Strong, Kiese Laymon, Carmen Maria Machado, André Aciman, Sari Botton, Nayomi Munaweera, Brandon Taylor, and Leslie Jamison.

In Be Safe, Love Mom Elaine braids together her own personal experiences with those of fellow parents she's met along the way. Book excerpt: "Some families are created in different ways but are still, in every way, a family." Writer and star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Nia Vardalos firmly believed she was supposed to be a mom, but Mother Nature and modern medicine had put her in a headlock. So she made a choice that shocked friends, family, and even herself: with only fourteen hours' notice, she adopted a preschooler. Instant Mom is Vardalos's poignant and hilarious true chronicle of trying to become a mother while fielding nosy "frenemies" and Hollywood reporters asking, "Any baby news?" With genuine and frank honesty, she describes how she and husband Ian Gomez eventually found their daughter . . . and what happened next. Vardalos explores innovative ways to conquer the challenges all new moms face, from sleep to personal grooming, and learns that whether via biology, relationship, or adoption—motherhood comes in many forms. The book includes laugh-out-loud behind the scenes Hollywood anecdotes, plus an Appendix on how to adopt worldwide. Vardalos will donate proceeds from the book sales to charities. Vardalos candidly shares her instant motherhood story that is relatable for all new moms (and dads!)

Book excerpt: A guide for families of all backgrounds to celebrate cultural heritage and embrace inclusivity in the home and beyond. Gone are the days when socially conscious parents felt comfortable teaching their children to merely tolerate others. Instead, they are looking for a way to authentically embrace the fullness of their diverse communities. A Place to Belong offers a path forward for families to honor their cultural heritage and champion diversity in the context of daily family life by: • Fostering open dialogue around discrimination, race, gender, disability, and class • Teaching “hard history” in an age-appropriate way • Curating a diverse selection of books and media choices in which children see themselves and people who are different • Celebrating cultural heritage through art, music, and poetry • Modeling activism and engaging in community service projects as a family Amber O’Neal Johnston, a homeschooling mother of four, shows parents of all backgrounds how to create a home environment where children feel secure in their own personhood and culture, enabling them to better understand and appreciate people who are racially and culturally different. A Place to Belong gives parents the tools to empower children to embrace their unique identities while feeling beautifully tethered to their global community.

Book excerpt: The events recounted here are unapologetically written in a subjective manner and are not recounted for their accuracy as much as for the heritage they celebrate. I am sharing stories that our Mother told me of her heritage and life prior to her marriage to our Father. Perhaps she told them when I was at home sick or pretending to be. Perhaps it was a stormy day, and I was afraid. Perhaps our Mother was rocking me to help me recover from real or imagined night terrors. I fully acknowledge my deep emotional ties to our Mother and therefore I am not claiming to be objective. Born in rural Newfoundland in the early 1900’s, our Mother lived a very isolated life, and perhaps this is why she always cherished her solitude. Henceforth, I will refer to her as Mom and to our maternal Grandmother as Mother. The lady, who became Mom, insisted on naming the farm animals, leaving her home to travel by dog team, ship and train to enter a life of service. I have to stop myself from getting too far ahead. I really hope you enjoy the book as it unfolds. I am thrilled that writing down these memories has affirmed for me that most things are relative, especially when it involves familial relatives. I reiterate that I do not promise that I have produced a factual account of any of the enclosed events, but rather I cling to the subjective accounts of our Mom as I remember them. I set out to record stories from her childhood, and doing so has driven me to writing another one about my own childhood.

Book excerpt: This book is a subjective account of stories my mother told me. It is not written for historical accuracy. Rather, it is a celebration of my heritage. The book is a sharing of stories that Mom told me of her life from her arrival in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, Canada. Mom was born in rural Newfoundland in the early 1900s. During the first fourteen years of her life, she and her family lived a very isolated lifestyle. Things changed one day when she got on a sled. The journey from dog sled, to ship, to train was an introduction to a change of lifestyle. There would be no going back to a winter house. If you are interested in what her life was like prior to this, please read the previous book entitled: Moms Stories. As you read, I hope you will visualize the life of a single woman in-service, grasp her desire for independence, travel with her in your mind back to an isolated community and experience her reaction to the physical environment of that time and how it impacted her world view. I compiled these memories so that future generations would know something of the heritage and the struggle that she faced as life in town changed her. Allow me to reiterate that I do not promise a factual account of any of the events. I cling to the personal accounts of our Mom as she told them to me.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a true account of a critically ill mother and the misadventures with a caring daughter. It could have been a pleasure to care for Mother, but she revealed her true colors. Daughter's temperament was giving and forgiving. Mother's temperament was vindictive and selfish. The environment became one of tolerance and intolerance, rather than love. An intense dislike between Mother and Daughter ensued. This is the story of the thirteen months they shared life together.
