Download or read book Moment Maps and Combinatorial Invariants of Hamiltonian Tn̳-spaces written by Victor Guillemin and published by Birkhauser. This book was released on 1994 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The action of a compact Lie group, G, on a compact sympletic manifold gives rise to some remarkable combinatorial invariants. The simplest and most interesting of these is the moment polytopes, a convex polyhedron which sits inside the dual of the Lie algebra of G. One of the main goals of this monograph is to describe what kinds of geometric information are encoded in this polytope. This book is addressed to researchers and can be used as a semester text.

Download or read book Toric Topology written by Megumi Harada and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toric topology is the study of algebraic, differential, symplectic-geometric, combinatorial, and homotopy-theoretic aspects of a particular class of torus actions whose quotients are highly structured. The combinatorial properties of this quotient and the equivariant topology of the original manifold interact in a rich variety of ways, thus illuminating subtle aspects of both the combinatorics and the equivariant topology. Many of the motivations and guiding principles of the fieldare provided by (though not limited to) the theory of toric varieties in algebraic geometry as well as that of symplectic toric manifolds in symplectic geometry. This volume is the proceedings of the International Conference on Toric Topology held in Osaka in May-June 2006. It contains about 25 research and survey articles written by conference speakers, covering many different aspects of, and approaches to, torus actions, such as those mentioned above. Some of the manuscripts are survey articles, intended to give a broad overview of an aspect of the subject; all manuscripts consciously aim to be accessible to a broad reading audience of students andresearchers interested in the interaction of the subjects involved. We hope that this volume serves as an enticing invitation to this emerging field.
Book Synopsis Lectures on Symplectic Geometry by : Ana Cannas da Silva
Download or read book Lectures on Symplectic Geometry written by Ana Cannas da Silva and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of these notes is to provide a fast introduction to symplectic geometry for graduate students with some knowledge of differential geometry, de Rham theory and classical Lie groups. This text addresses symplectomorphisms, local forms, contact manifolds, compatible almost complex structures, Kaehler manifolds, hamiltonian mechanics, moment maps, symplectic reduction and symplectic toric manifolds. It contains guided problems, called homework, designed to complement the exposition or extend the reader's understanding. There are by now excellent references on symplectic geometry, a subset of which is in the bibliography of this book. However, the most efficient introduction to a subject is often a short elementary treatment, and these notes attempt to serve that purpose. This text provides a taste of areas of current research and will prepare the reader to explore recent papers and extensive books on symplectic geometry where the pace is much faster. For this reprint numerous corrections and clarifications have been made, and the layout has been improved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the series of volumes which together will constitute the "Handbook of Differential Geometry" we try to give a rather complete survey of the field of differential geometry. The different chapters will both deal with the basic material of differential geometry and with research results (old and recent). All chapters are written by experts in the area and contain a large bibliography. In this second volume a wide range of areas in the very broad field of differential geometry is discussed, as there are Riemannian geometry, Lorentzian geometry, Finsler geometry, symplectic geometry, contact geometry, complex geometry, Lagrange geometry and the geometry of foliations. Although this does not cover the whole of differential geometry, the reader will be provided with an overview of some its most important areas. . Written by experts and covering recent research. Extensive bibliography. Dealing with a diverse range of areas. Starting from the basics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special geometries as well as the relation between curvature and topology have always been of interest to differential geometers. More recently, these topics have turned out to be of use in physical problems related to string theory as well. This volume provides a unique and thorough survey on the latest developments on Riemannian geometry, special geometrical structures on manifolds, and their interactions with other fields such as mathematical physics, complex analysis, andalgebraic geometry. This volume presents ten papers written by participants of the ``Short Program on Riemannian Geometry,'' a workshop held at the CRM in Montreal in 2004. It will be a valuable reference for graduate students and research mathematicians alike. Book Synopsis Quaternionic Structures In Mathematics And Physics - Proceedings Of The Second Meeting by : Stefano Marchiafava
Download or read book Quaternionic Structures In Mathematics And Physics - Proceedings Of The Second Meeting written by Stefano Marchiafava and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001-07-11 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last five years, after the first meeting on “Quaternionic Structures in Mathematics and Physics”, interest in quaternionic geometry and its applications has continued to increase. Progress has been made in constructing new classes of manifolds with quaternionic structures (quaternionic Kähler, hyper-Kähler, hyper-complex, etc.), studying the differential geometry of special classes of such manifolds and their submanifolds, understanding relations between the quaternionic structure and other differential-geometric structures, and also in physical applications of quaternionic geometry. Some generalizations of classical quaternion-like structures (like HKT structures and hyper-Kähler manifolds with singularities) appeared naturally and were studied. Some of those results are published in this book.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Two-Dimensional Quantum Field Theory with (0,2) Supersymmetry by : Ilarion V. Melnikov
Download or read book An Introduction to Two-Dimensional Quantum Field Theory with (0,2) Supersymmetry written by Ilarion V. Melnikov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces two-dimensional supersymmetric field theories with emphasis on both linear and non-linear sigma models. Complex differential geometry, in connection with supersymmetry, has played a key role in most developments of the last thirty years in quantum field theory and string theory. Both structures introduce a great deal of rigidity compared to the more general categories of non-supersymmetric theories and real differential geometry, allowing for many general conceptual results and detailed quantitative predictions. Two-dimensional (0,2) supersymmetric quantum field theories provide a natural arena for the fruitful interplay between geometry and quantum field theory. These theories play an important role in string theory and provide generalizations, still to be explored fully, of rich structures such as mirror symmetry. They also have applications to non-perturbative four-dimensional physics, for instance as descriptions of surface defects or low energy dynamics of solitonic strings in four-dimensional supersymmetric theories. The purpose of these lecture notes is to acquaint the reader with these fascinating theories, assuming a background in conformal theory, quantum field theory and differential geometry at the beginning graduate level. In order to investigate the profound relations between structures from complex geometry and field theory the text begins with a thorough examination of the basic structures of (0,2) quantum field theory and conformal field theory. Next, a simple class of Lagrangian theories, the (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg models, are discussed, together with the resulting renormalization group flows, dynamics, and symmetries. After a thorough introduction and examination of (0,2) non-linear sigma models, the text introduces linear sigma models that, in particular, provide a unified treatment of non-linear sigma models and Landau-Ginzburg theories. Many exercises, along with discussions of relevant mathematical notions and important open problems in the field, are included in the text.

New to this edition are chapters on Water Waves, Rogue Waves, Multiple Scales methods, legged locomotion, Condensed Matter among others, while all other contributions have been revised and updated. Coverage includes the theory of (Poincare’-Birkhoff) Normal Forms, aspects of PT in specific mathematical settings (Hamiltonian, KAM theory, Nekhoroshev theory, and symmetric systems), technical problems arising in PT with solutions, convergence of series expansions, diagrammatic methods, parametric resonance, systems with nilpotent real part, PT for non-smooth systems, and on PT for PDEs [write out this acronym partial differential equations]. Another group of papers is focused specifically on applications to Celestial Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics and the related semiclassical PT, Quantum Bifurcations, Molecular Dynamics, the so-called choreographies in the N-body problem, as well as Evolutionary Theory. Overall, this unique volume serves to demonstrate the wide utility of PT, while creating a foundation for innovations from a new generation of graduate students and professionals in Physics, Mathematics, Mechanics, Engineering and the Biological Sciences.
