This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature in polymerization reaction engineering has bloomed sufficiently in the last several years to justify our attempt in putting together this book. Rather than offer a comprehensive treatment of the entire field, thereby duplicating earlier texts as well as some ongoing bookwriting efforts, we decided to narrow down our aim to step growth polymerization systems. This not only provides us the lUxury of a more elaborate presentation within the constraints of production costs, but also enables us to remain on somewhat familiar terrain. The style and format we have selected are those of a textbook. The first six chapters present the principles of step growth polymerization. These are quite general, and can easily be applied in such diverse and emerging fields as polymerization applications in photolithography and microelec tronics. A detailed discussion of several important step growth polymeriz ations follows in the next five chapters. One could cover the first six chapters of this book in about six to eight weeks of a three-credit graduate course on polymerization reactors, with the other chapters assigned for reading. This could be followed by a discussion of chain-growth and other polymeriz ations, with which our material blends well. Alternately, the entire contents of this book could be covered in a course on step growth systems alone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis describes a study of polymerisation with the intention of demonstrating the generic feasibility of some control techniques for the production of polymers with prescribed molecular weight distributions. The polymerisation of styrene using thermal and catalytic initiation was used as an exemplar for the purposes of developing the strategies. A number of mathematical models have been developed, including the kinetics of the free-radical bulk polymerisation of styrene initiated thermally and by 2,2'azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) catalyst without consideration of the environment in which the reactions occur. The dynamics of the polymerisation process are described in terms of the first three moments of the distribution of dead polymer. These moments were used to characterise the molecular weight distribution of the polymer for the purposes of control. Further, the constraints of carrying out the polymerisation in batch and semi-batch reactors, continuous stirred tank reactors and a tubular reactor have been modelled. Dynamic optimisation using Pontryagin's minimum principle and the kinetic model was used to solve the minimum batch time problem by considering separately and simultaneously the two optimal policies, for initiator and temperature. These policies yield the minimum batch time to produce a polymer product which satisfies a set of target specifications for the molecular weight distribution. Using the kinetic and reactor models together, and the optimal temperature policy as a reference level, a model based predictive controller was employed to assess whether a realistic implementation of the policy could be achieved. A difficulty in the practical, real time control of polymerisation is the lack of on-line measurement of molecular weight. A preliminary study of a model based, non-linear observer was conducted to estimate molecular weight distribution on-line. It was shown that the estimate is robust in the face of disturbances and uncertainty in the initial conditions.
