Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the work was to study the detailed behavior of gas molecules at a solid boundary in order to gain understanding of gas-solid collision phenomena. Experimentally, the scheme involves analysis of the velocity distribution of a beam of molecules incident on a solid surface and analysis of velocity and spatial distribution of the molecules after surface collision. The experimental work has thus far been directed towards the development of: (1) a molecular velocity spectrometer, (2) a vacuum apparatus, and (3) a signal detection and discrimination system. The report includes primarily a description of these components.

Book excerpt: This book gives a representative survey of the state of the art of research on gas-surface interactions. It provides an overview of the current understanding of gas surface dynamics and, in particular, of the reactive and non-reactive processes of atoms and small molecules at surfaces. Leading scientists in the field, both from the theoretical and the experimental sides, write in this book about their most recent advances. Surface science grew as an interdisciplinary research area over the last decades, mostly because of new experimental technologies (ultra-high vacuum, for instance), as well as because of a novel paradigm, the ‘surface science’ approach. The book describes the second transformation which is now taking place pushed by the availability of powerful quantum-mechanical theoretical methods implemented numerically. In the book, experiment and theory progress hand in hand with an unprecedented degree of accuracy and control. The book presents how modern surface science targets the atomic-level understanding of physical and chemical processes at surfaces, with particular emphasis on dynamical aspects. This book is a reference in the field.

Book excerpt: Molecular beam scattering techniques have firmly established themselves among the major tools for studying the kinetics and dynamics of gas- surface interactions. They have also proven themselves to be of great use in materials synthesis, most notably being used for the molecular beam epitaxial (MBE) growth of semiconductor substrates and superlattices. During the past few years our research group has been very active in developing new and quite general molecular beam techniques for studying the kinetic mechanisms of surface chemical reactions. We have, in particular, focused much of our attention on extending traditional molecular beam measurements to allow us to routinely explore coverage dependent kinetic mechanisms under essentially linearized conditions. These efforts have been quite successful. Our three molecular beam scattering arrangement is unique in the world, and significantly expands the range and power of modulated beam reactive scattering for studying complex kinetics at surfaces. The experimental methodology we have developed utilizes two continuous, independently adjustable beams to establish a desired steady state surface concentration, while a weaker modulated third beam induces small concentration perturbations around the selected steady state. This linearized approach permits the coupled differential equations which represent the overall surface reaction mechanism to be solved perturbatively, yielding quantitative information about the various kinetic steps which comprise overall reaction mechanisms.

Book excerpt: From proceedings of the International Summer Institute in surface science; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA (28 Aug 1973). Molecular beam - surface scattering experiments, the nature of elastic and inelastic scattering, and the information obtained from detection of the angular distribution and kinetic energy of the scattered particles are described. The types of energy exchange that take place between a gas atom or molecule and the surface atoms and the theories that have been developed to explain some of these energy transfer processes are discussed. Finally the results of some experiments are reviewed, and directions for future research are pointed out. (JFP).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Gas–Surface Interactions presents the study of the surface itself and the study of the gas phase partner of the interaction in which physical or chemical transformation of the gas resulted from that interaction. This book discusses the study of the energy and momentum exchanges resulting from the gas–solid physical interaction in which either gas or solid phase properties can be measured. Organized into three parts encompassing 33 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the different sensitive physical methods for the study of surface topography, surface defects, and surface irregularities to an accuracy of a few Angstroms. This text then reviews the adsorption at very low coverage that has yielded to equilibrium analysis. Other chapters consider the measurement of surface area by adsorption and optical techniques. The final chapter deals with scattering processes including momentum and energy transfer. This book is a valuable resource for engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular beams are being used to study chemical interactions on surfaces with increasing frequency and effectiveness. During the period beginning in 1970 through the spring of 1975, the number of published papers in this field approximately doubled. It is the purpose of this article to comprehensively review the field of molecular beam studies of chemical interactions on surfaces during this period and provide a helpful perspective for the use of other workers in this field. Within the scope of this article will be included molecular beam studies of (1) chemisorption with special emphasis on 'activated chemisorption, ' (2) studies of heterogeneous chemical reactions including simple unimolecular decomposition, (3) reactions with the surface of corrosion, and (4) catalytic bimolecular reactions between distinct chemical species on the surface. A discussion of the experimental details of molecular beam techniques and their application to studies of chemical interactions on surfaces has been largely avoided since this topic has been thoroughly discussed in other recent articles.
