Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is an authentic privilege to have the opportunity to assemble and edit a new volume on "Prolactin," the first in several decades to be devoted to this fascinating hormone in all its aspects. The obvious clinical rationale for understanding prolactin (PRL) is the frequent occurrence of prolactinomas, the most common type of pituitary tumor. Fortunately, medical management of prolactinomas can be based on our under standing of the physiology of hypothalamic control of the lactotroph. Armed with this knowledge, therapies for proiactinomas are highly successful and well tolerated. Be cause of the historical and practical importance of knowledge regarding the hypothala mus-Iactotroph axis, the first chapters of this volume are dedicated to reviewing the physiology, development, and cell biology of lactotroph regulation. Chapters focusing on prolactinomas and related clinical issues follow these. PRL is the primary hormone that is responsible for "parental care" in many verte brate species. This reproductive strategy is not unique to mammals, but it has devel oped through evolution to be the central distinguishing feature of the mammalian life cycle. Among the mammals, mice have become the most effective research species in recent years. This can be traced to the development of a wide range of methods for manipulating mouse genetics, and thereby influencing development, physiology and behavior. Mice also provide a profound illustration of the physiological challenges faced in maternity. Female mice undergo a post-partum estrous, and often are both pregnant and lactating simultaneously.

Book excerpt: The 'Yearbook of Pediatric Endocrinology 2006' brings you abstracts of articles that reported the year's breakthrough developments in the basic sciences and evidence-based new knowledge in clinical research and clinical practice that are relevant to the field. Twelve Associate Editors and their co-authors have done an immense job poring over the top journals to discover this year's advances, and provide their chapters in a timely fashion. These cover the identification of new genes involved in diseases, new hormones, concepts revised or recentered, important observations for clinical practice, large-scale clinical trials, new mechanisms, new paradigms, important review articles, new fears and new hopes. This is the third volume of the 'Yearbook of Pediatric Endocrinology'. To acknowledge the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) endorsement of the Yearbook, the publication of the Yearbook is linked to ESPE's annual meetings, and hence, this volume is published only nine months after the previous one, covering the medical and scientific literature from June 2005 through April 2006. The 'Yearbook of Pediatric Endocrinology 2006' will help busy clinicians and scientists, pediatric endocrinologists, and also pediatricians and endocrinologists keep informed on new advances in their field.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first edition of Principles and Practice of Pediatric Endocrinology brings together 30 authors from 4 countries to present an update on the molecular basis of endocrine disorders in infants, children and adolescents as well as the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions. It is intended for the use of practitioners, fellows and clinical and “bench-top” researchers in this field, and presents advances in each of 12 areas of the normal and abnormal endocrine state. The work is a tribute to all those past and present whose research and clinical efforts resulted in the rapidly increasing accumulation of knowledge in this field, and includes comprehensive, practical clinical presentations in the form of an Atlas following each chapter after the comprehensive introductory chapter by Drs. Root and Rogol. This publication owes a great debt to Lawson Wilkins, a Baltimore pediatrician who first formally established the separate discipline of pediatric endocrinology, to Edwards Park, Fuller Albright, Bob Blizzard, Claude Migeon, Harold and Helen Harrison, James Tanner and to so many others: giants upon whose shoulders pediatric endocrinologists stand. Disorders of growth and pubertal development are the cornerstones of pediatrics as they are present in many children with chronic illness as well as in children whose growth and pubertal development are influenced by genetics and family history. These may have identifiable causes in pituitary, thyroid, adrenal or gonadal function, and examples are well represented in this book. Obesity and diabetes (types I and 2) are, likewise, diseases of childhood that are becoming increasingly and significantly prevalent and are included in this work. Disorders of calcium/phosphorus (especially the often forgotten but not gone Vitamin D deficiency rickets) and water metabolism are presented, and errors of sexual differentiation (an increasingly controversial issue) are highlighted. It is the hope of the editors that this work will assist the practitioner and researcher in this field in his or her efforts to diagnose, treat and establish the etiology of endocrine disorders in infants, children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: Pituitary adenomas account for 10-15% of all intracranial tumors and they frequently impair fertility. The development of medical and surgical therapy for such tumors has turned pregnancy into a reality for women harboring pituitary adenomas. However, gestation risks for both mother and fetus are still of concern for endocrinologists, gynecologists and pediatricians. This book intends to update knowledge on this topic, mainly regarding fertility restoration as well as gestational and post gestational management of patients with pituitary tumors.

Book excerpt: The body of knowledge in most medical specialties is rapidly expanding, making it virtually impossible to follow all advances in clinical and basic sciences that are relevant to a given field. This is particularly true in pediatric endocrinology, at the cross-road of pediatrics, endocrinology, development and genetics. The 2005 Yearbook of Pediatric Endocrinology brings you a selection of articles that report the year's breakthrough developments in basic sciences and evidence-based new knowledge in clinical research and clinical practice that are relevant to the field. Covering the medical literature published from July 2004 through June 2005, the editors and associate editors selected from several thousand papers those that brought the most meaningful new information, summarized them and provided comments to put them into perspective. The papers are classified into those that identify new genes involved in diseases, new hormones, concepts revised or recentered, important observations for clinical practice, large-scale clinical trials, new mechanisms, new paradigms, important review articles, new fears and new hopes. This is the second volume of the Yearbook of Pediatric Endocrinology, and it is already regarded as a tradition by experts in the field. The Yearbook of Pediatric Endocrinology is endorsed by the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE). We hope that the Yearbook of Pediatric Endocrinology 2005 will help busy clinicians and scientists, pediatric endocrinologists, and also pediatricians and endocrinologists keep informed on new advances in our field.
