Book excerpt: This paper describes assessments of methods of establishing the suitability of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) for use in moisture-hazardous environments. The lap-shear and associated preconditioning methods in European Standard prEN 314-1 have been identified as offering the best method for determining glue bond performance of LVL. They showed that LVL made from Finnish Norway spruce, British Sitka spruce and British poplar, has considerable resistance to moisture and even to quite severe wetting. The paper will be of interest to manufacturers, architects, specifiers and users of timber and wood products.

Book excerpt: Laminated-veneer lumber (LVL) was subjected to a vacuum-pressure-soak test and then oven dried (VPS-OD) to assess durability for outside exposure. Mechanical properties were generally unaffected by this treatment. After a period (250 days) of exterior exposure in Melbourne, LVL planks, some loaded to a moderate stress, others unloaded, were found to deflect significantly in comparison to solid wood and minor changes in mechanical properties were measured. The VPS-OD treatment did not predict this behaviour. Shear properties of LVL have been documented as being of a lower order in comparison to solid wood and this was confirmed. Some of the relatively large deflections measured may be due to this factor. (author abstract).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “old” material of wood has been used to construct dwellings of different types since the dawn of mankind. And not without reason. Its low density combined with high rigidity, good processability, and its resistance makes it an excellent building material. There is currently a pioneering renaissance of the timber construction, for two distinct reasons: first, wood is increasingly being rediscovered as one of the most important renewable raw materials for sustainable construction. Moreover, a revolution in the construction of timber structures began several years ago with the ever-progressive use of three-dimensional CAD models for digitally controlled robot manufacturing The book documents these developments, in particular the engineering bonding techniques, the introduction of digital production techniques, and the innovative material developments of this material. The chapter on composite structures and experimental structures specifically address trends toward the future-oriented dimensions of timber construction. In the final section, outstanding designs are documented in detail, such as the Club House of Haesley Nine Bridges Golf Course designed by Shigeru Ban in Yeoju, South Korea, and the double gymnasium in Borex-Crassier, Switzerland, by Graeme Mann and Patricia Capua Mann.

Book excerpt: with some 600 photos and 4000 drawings and plans, the Timber Construction Manual is a comprehensive and indispensable reference work in the specialist literature on timber. It looks at all types of timber and timber materials, also presenting detailed information on the current norms and standards. Chapters cover the basic principles of working with timber, providing detailed information on subjects such as heat, noise insulation, fire protection treatment. The significance of timber with particular reference to ecology is also investigated. Timber as a load-bearing material is considered, and topics such as new methods of joining, transport and montage are documented. The second part of the volume presents a large number of built examples which feature some "classic" structures but focus chiefly on more recent buildings. The spectrum presented ranges from heavy-load bridges to multi-storey residential buildings. The second part of the examples looks specifically at topics such as facades, building skins etc.

Book excerpt: A necessary purchase for level 1 and 2 undergraduates studying building/ construction materials modules, Materials for Architects and Builders provides an introduction to the broad range of materials used within the construction industry and contains information pertaining to their manufacture, key physical properties, specification and uses. Construction Materials is a core module on all undergraduate and diploma construction-related courses and this established textbook is illustrated in colour throughout with many photographs and diagrams to help students understand the key principles. This new edition has been completely revised and updated to include the latest developments in materials, appropriate technologies and relevant legislation. The current concern for the ecological effects of building construction and lifetime use are reflected in the emphasis given to sustainability and recycling. An additional chapter on sustainability and governmental carbon targets reinforces this issue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The properties of materials provide key information regarding their appropriateness for a product and how they will function in service. The Third Edition provides a relevant discussion and vital examples of the fundamentals of materials science so that these details can be applied in real-world situations. Horath effectively combines principles and theory with practical applications used in today's machines, devices, structures, and consumer products. The basic premises of materials science and mechanical behavior are explored as they relate to all types of materials: ferrous and nonferrous metals; polymers and elastomers; wood and wood products; ceramics and glass; cement, concrete, and asphalt; composites; adhesives and coatings; fuels and lubricants; and smart materials. Valuable and insightful coverage of the destructive and nondestructive evaluation of material properties builds the groundwork for inspection processes and testing techniques, such as tensile, creep, compression, shear, bend or flexure, hardness, impact, and fatigue. Laboratory exercises and reference materials are included for hands-on learning in a supervised environment, which promotes a perceptive understanding of why we study and test materials and develop skills in industry-sanctioned testing procedures, data collection, reporting and graphing, and determining additional appropriate tests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public debate has stimulated interest in finding greater compatibility among forest management regimes. The debate has often portrayed management choices as tradeoffs between biophysical and socioeconomic components of ecosystems. Here we focus on specific management strategies and emphasize broad goals such as biodiversity, wood production and habitat conservation while maintaining other values from forestlands desired by the public. We examine the following proposition: Commodity production (timber, nontimber forest products) and the other forest values (biodiversity, fish and wildlife habitat) can be simultaneously produced from the same area in a socially acceptable manner. Based on recent research in the Pacific Northwest, we show there are alternatives for managing forest ecosystems that avoid the divisive arena of 'either-or' choices. Much of the work discussed in this book addresses two aspects of the compatibility issue. First, how are various forest management practices related to an array of associated goods and services? Second, how do different approaches to forest management affect relatively large and complex ecosystems?

Book excerpt: Tall wood buildings have been at the foreground of innovative building practice in urban contexts for a number of years. From London to Stockholm, from Vancouver to Melbourne timber buildings of up to 20 storeys have been built, are under construction or being considered. This dynamic trend was enabled by developments in the material itself, prefabrication and more flexibility in fire regulations. The low CO2 footprint of wood - often regionally sourced - is another strong argument in its favour. This publication explains the typical construction types such as panel systems, frame and hybrid systems. An international selection of 13 case studies is documented in detail with many specially prepared construction drawings, demonstrating the range of the technology.
