Book excerpt: The use of ion beams for the modification of the structure and properties of the near-surface region of ceramics began in earnest in the early 19805. Since the mechanical properties of such materials are dominated by surface flaws and the surface stress state, the use of surface modification tech niques would appear to be an obvious application. As is often the case in research and development, most of the initial studies can be characterized as cataloging the response of various ceramic materials to a range of ion beam treatments. The systematic study of material and ion beam parameters is well underway and we are now designing experiments to provide specific information about the processing parameter - structure-property rela tionships. This NATO-Advanced Study Institute was convened in order to assess our current state of knowledge in this field, to identify opportunities and needs for further research, and to identify the potential of such processes for technological application. It became apparent that this class of inorganic compounds, loosely termed ceramics, presents many challenges to the understanding of ion-solid inter actions, the relationships among ion-beam parameters, materials parameters, and the resulting structures, as well as relationships between structure and properties. In many instances, this understanding will represent a major extension of that learned from the study of metals and semiconductors.

Book excerpt: The use of ion beams for the modification of the structure and properties of the near-surface region of ceramics began in earnest in the early 1980s. Since the mechanical properties of such materials are dominated by surface flaws and the surface stress state, the use of surface modification techniques would appear to be an obvious application. The systematic study of material and ion beam parameters is well underway and we are now designing experiments to provide specific information about the processing parameter - property relationships. The first group of lectures dealt structure-property with the fundamentals of ion-solid interactions and the defect structure of compounds. Chemical and thermodynamic factors appear to be significantly more important than for simple metallic systems. The second group of lectures concerned the experimentally observed microstructural features and phase structures that develop during ion-beam processing of ceramics. The properties of ion-implanted and ion-beam-mixed ceramics were treated in Part III, and included discussions on mechanical, tribological, chemical, electrical, and optical properties. The final section was concerned with thin films and coatings prepared by ion-beam-assisted processes. Symposia.

Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Surfaces and Interfaces of Ceramic Materials, held on the Oleron island, France, in September 1988. This Institute was organized in nine months after receiving the agreement of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division. Despite this very short time, most of the lecturers contacted have accepted our invitation to prepare a specific talk. The meeting was held at "La Vieille Perrotine" on the Oleron island. This holiday village of the French CNRS is located near the Ocean in a natural area which contributed to create a very pleasant atmosphere favourable to develop interaction between the 91 participants in this Institute. First of all, the Institute was aimed at diffusing the foremost results on the characterization of and the role played by surfaces, grain boundaries and interfaces in preparation and overall properties of ceramic materials, mainly of oxide ceramics. Through its interdisciplinary character, the Institute was also aimed at developing interaction between scientists and engineers interested in basic and practical aspects of processing and use of ceramics.

Book excerpt: Surface & Coatings Technology, Volumes 59–60 presents the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Plasma Surface Engineering, held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on October 26–29, 1992. This book discusses the widespread applications of plasma and particle beam assisted methods in surface and thin film technology. Volume 59 is organized into 11 parts encompassing 69 chapters while Volume 60 is comprised of eight parts encompassing 49 chapters. This compilation of papers begins with an overview of the kinetic modelling of low pressure high frequency discharges. This text then examines the effect of various deposition parameters on the growth of chamber wall deposits. Other chapters consider the physiochemical behavior of ceramic materials for space applications. This book discusses as well the economic aspects of the application of plasma surface technologies. The reader is also introduced to the environmental aspects of physical vapor deposition coating technology. This book is a valuable resource for plasma surface engineers, technologists, and researchers.

Book excerpt: Among the most important challenges of modern material engineering is to repair ill or damaged organs of the human body. Ceramic materials have various superior characteristics in mechanical properties, heat resistance and chemical stability. Therefore, ceramics have been considered as the candidate for biomaterials used for tooth root and artificial bone. Among the ceramics, alumina is being widely used as hard tissue replacement. Despite having the assets for its effective use as hard tissue implant materials, it has some major drawbacks. Though alumina is inert, but it is corrodible in body solution, which may lead to failure of the implant. Another major drawback is its rigidity and brittleness. In this work, we have tried to improve the properties of alumina by nitrogen ion implantation for its use as potential hard tissue replacement. Ion implantation offers an unrivalled tool for tailoring of the surface properties, making possible to design new biocompatible materials characterized by superior mechanical and biological properties. In this work we have improved the surface properties of alumina without changing the bulk properties by nitrogen ion implantation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern technology depends on materials with precisely controlled properties. Ion beams are an excellent way to achieve controlled modification of surface and near-surface regions. In every integrated circuit production line, for example, there are ion implantation systems. In addition to integrated circuit technology, ion beams can modify the mechanical, tribological, and chemical properties of metal, intermetallic, and ceramic materials without altering their bulk properties. Ion-solid interactions are the foundation that underlies the broad application of ion beams to the modification of materials. This text covers the fundamentals and applications of ion-solid interactions, and is aimed at graduate students and researchers interested in electronic devices, surface engineering, reactor and nuclear engineering, and materials science issues associated with metastable phase synthesis.

Book excerpt: Modification of chemical, physical and mechanical properties of ceramic/semiconductor surfaces by ion implantation provides an opportunity to define and obtain desirable properties for a variety of applications. These include: interfaces in composite materials, electrical properties of devices and contacts, and specialized surfaces for optical waveguides, wear and corrosion resistance, etc. In this study, single crystals (6H), and whiskers of high purity silicon carbide were implanted with a variety of n- and p-type dopants (B, N, A1, P), an isovalent dopant (Ti), inert species (Ne) and hydrogen. Isochronal anneals at temperatures up to 1173 K permitted systematic evaluation of thermal effects in the implanted region. Implants fluences were normalized to permit comparisons on the basis of equal concentrations of displaced Si atoms for each ion. microstructural, mechanical and chemical effects were studied by a series of RBS/channeling, TEM, SEM, microhardness, microtensile, AES, SIMS, and wetting (sputtered and molten metal) measurements. Recovery of crystalline structure during annealing is shown to be relatively independent of the implant species but depends upon the number of atomic displacements in the Si sublattice. Near-surface mechanical and chemical effects, however, are very dependent on the chemical/electrical nature of the implanted ions. Applications to ceramic/metal interfaces in metal matrix composites are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide variety of structures are produced by ion implantation in ceramics. Random (substitutional and interstitial site occupancy) solid solutions with concentrations of solute that exceed the solubility limit can be produced in Al2O3. The changes that occur during annealing are complex and sometimes unpredictable. Silicon carbide becomes amorphous in a manner analogous to Si for ion fluences that produce more than 0.2 dpa damage. Light (N) and heavy (Cr) ions produce similar results if the fluence is scaled to damage energy deposited. Because of mass differences in the ions, two damage regions are developed in TiB2. The structure remains crystalline to very high damage levels. These structural alterations cause changes in the surface mechanical properties. Since virtually any chemical species can be implanted, one can independently control structural damage and chemical effects. When coupled with selective annealing, this technique has the potential for producing a wide range of surface structures and properties. 8 figures.
